Lieutenant Syed Yaser Abbas Nominated for Nishan-e-Haider ( )

The night of Sunday, May 22, 2011, will be remembered as one of the most haunting nights in the history of Pakistan. While Pakistan was still reeling from the killing of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad on May 2, the 16-hour operation against terrorists at PNS Mehran served to add salt to the wounds of the nation.

At 10:40 pm I received a message from some course mates while having dinner together that a “P3-C Orion has been hit”. I tweeted this instantly, seeking confirmation from the media as I did not know whether the aircraft was hit in the air or on ground. This was the first and last message I would hear from my friends, who were now engaged in the operation.

At 12:54 am my social media feed read: My junior Lt Yaser and guards in his Squad are in the operation theater, the doctors are not confirming their condition, but saying that they have been shot – O negative blood is needed at PNS Rahat.

Just a few minutes later, we learnt that our brave junior had breathed his last. A couple of my close friends had also been shot.

I remember playing cricket with Yaser; he was an amazing athlete and one of the brightest students at the College of Aeronautical Engineering, Risalpur.

His course mate Abdullah talks about his personality:

“I haven’t known a more genuine person. The academy really puts you to test and only a fortunate few come out victorious. Lt. Syed Yaser Abbas represented the best of his kind and always managed to pass with flying colors. As per tradition, we called him ‘Naval Yaser’ (since he was part of the Pakistan Navy). Yaser was very close to me. Any person who has been at a boot-camp, will realise that when we call our course mates, our brothers, we mean it in the truest sense.

Ever since the PNS attack, I have endlessly recalled and relived the memorable times I have spent with Yaser – teasing seniors, late night gatherings, group study sessions, sitting on the roof-top chatting until late night, watching T20 world cup matches, mast qalandar sessions and the MOHA, CS gaming sessions – the list is endless. Yaser would also be early to bed the night before an exam, while we crammed but somehow he still managed to get better grades than us. He was also the one in the group who always had a bag of eatables on hand.

Yaser’s most distinctive feature was perhaps his loud, hearty laugh that could be heard long before anyone saw him coming. He always insisted he was an introvert back home, but we never really got to see that side of him. He was always joking and fooling around.

Spontaneity was his forte. Yaser executed unplanned, last-minute trips with ease. He never shied away from helping anyone who asked for his help. Even if you asked him at 3 am to come over, there he would be with his car.

All of us had been, in the last four months, planning a reunion. Just a day before the PNS Mehran attack, Yaser told me, he probably wouldn’t be able to make it for the reunion because his leaves had been postponed. He asked that we carry on without him, to which I replied that we could wait until he was granted leave. Who would have known then, that he would be the cause of our much-awaited reunion. May Allah bless his soul.”

Yaser was chatting with his friend, Umair before resuming duty that night. His last Facebook status update reads: finding it hard to bear the unbearable, need guts!

And much like the proverbial teaching in the military: no guts, no glory – his bravery, courage and sacrifice will be remembered for a long time to come.

Written on the walls of College of Aeronautical Engineering are the words ‘The Few, The Proud’. Yaser is most certainly among the few who have made his college and everyone who knew him proud by being nominated for the Nishan-e-Haider.

With the media coverage Yaser has received, he may be known to many as the face of the PNS Mehran attack, but there are tens of thousands of young men like him who have died fighting for their country.

Terrorist sympathisers are quick to point out that it is the US who has brought their war into Pakistan among other defenses for these heinous attacks of terrorism. In the face of haunting attacks such as that on PNS Mehran, even the thought of a terrorist sympathiser among us is appalling.

I believe nothing can be more tragic for a nation, which is still confused about who their real heroes are.

.
What one can say, he seemed like a gem of a person-- it is just so sad that with this and other supreme sacrafices of the flower of this nation -- we do not have the guts to speak the truth -- the truth that it is our war -- may be we Pakistani's need guts -- No guts, No glory!!!!

Allow me to shed some light and tell you the saddest story of a police woman who was working on a low income and her husband was jobless both from poor family, a few days in Nowshera terrorist attacked she gave her life to protect others and cause minimal damage because of her prompt action.

She left behind a baby and a husband. Her story went untold on Media. Shame media shame Govt..
There are countless stories to tell of them those Soldiers who were beheaded in warzone by terrorists in Sawat are praise worthy and worth awarding N-e-H or other military honorary awards.

I consider this award going towards mr. yasser political, unquestionably he did what he had to for the Nation and a full honor should be given to him and others. I also have complaint to all who are making threads and posting alone officers pics all over, non have opened thread on non commissioned soldiers of PAk Army not this time not before not to my knowledge as if they are low life people. This is horrible you people should respect them. 90% soldiers died in this War then officers yet I see threads and what not for officers only, Please change this attitude.

Karsh...sorry but our foolish media likes to play other shots, I have yet to see a full blown program documentary on the sacrifices of our soldiers on the borders with afghanistan but media is busy in making money. These stupid media tributes certain people and leave out thousands.

Govt. no longer controls the media as it used to. The issue is that our media is biased -- it has pro Mullah Streak in it and in some cases anti military bias as well. Media has made up its mind long before anyone else, in Pakistan, that this is not our war. Now they are out there making sure that we all believe that it is not our war either.

The hue and cry is of our sovereignty but no one from the media is asking or doing anything on focusing upon the undermining of our sovereignty by the Chechens, Uzbeks, Arabs and our people going into neighboring countries and creating havoc there. There was bound to blow back on this -- if we can not control/safeguard our own sovereignty, certainly other would not.

One of the biggest indicators of how we treat and guard our sovereignty is the mess in issuing passport and national ID Cards to literally hundreds and thousands of illegal aliens since 1977. The figure is close to at least 10 million (The Afghans, Bengalis, Burmese, CIS States, the Arab Brethren States etc.) Our sovereignty was undermined the day we participated in the Afghan Conflict (There was no US involvement till two years later).

On the Lady Constable, may Allah rest her soul in peace and grant her children his choicest blessings.

and what about the many brave young officers and jawans who have given their lives fighting the militants in FATA for the last 10 years.

No NH
No HJ
No SJ
No TJ

what is 'different' in their 'sacrifice' & the ultimate sacrifice of Lt. Yasar Abbas! - God Bless his soul!

My sentiments exactly. Not to undermine what the young lad did as it would have been done by any other young lad in his place. But NISHAAN HAIDER, our nations top honor for selfless bravery & sacrifice in face of certain death, should be preferably given to soldiers who bravely & knowingly sacrifice their tomorrows so that we could go on with our today. I salute the young Naval Shaheed for what he did, but the way his mother was crying on the media and asking everyone to give him the NH was a huge discredit to the soul of the young lad!

.
I think if he gets NH it will be the first one for the Navy and will give navy something to pride off....

. .
I think Nishan-e-Haider is too big a award, should not be given in internal security operations. period.

He was one of first to take bullets but not the only one.

Gem man and ultimate scarifice by Lt Yaser Abbass Shaheed.

RIP

.
I had tears in my eyes when I saw Lt. Yaser's pic and read about him BUT I can't forget other young officers and jawans who walked into the battle field against these monsters, never to come back. May Allah bless their souls and give them jannah and patience to their families.

I think SJ will suffice and it should be awarded to all who took part in action on that day and also to our other martyrs as well.

.
BUT don't forget that Navy hasn't received any Nishan-e-Haider in any war.. so the Navel Head might also agree to grant Nishan-e-Hayder to Capt. Yasir Shaheed.

...

Hint: Raja Perveiz Ashraf (Minister of Water and Power) is granted Nishan-e-Imtiaz when country is facing 18 hours of loadshedding in many parts todate.

Admiral Bashir is Salman Bashir's brother and close to Zardari so he will gladly accept it ... as far as Raja Pervez Ashraf is concerned, there are many waiting in Toronto with old shows to give him Nishan-e-joota ... they often remember him and sing aik baar aaja, jhalak dikh laja, aik baar aaja aaja aaja :)

.
this is not about nishan e haider aur sitare basalat
its about bravery and true love for your country

.
we salute Lt Yaser and all the others who have given their lives so we all and our country may be saved from these maniacs.
But nisan a haider seems out of place. It is the highest award and should be so respected. There are other awards which may be awarded.

.
Can any shed some light on what is the criteria for Nishan e haider ? nomination and decision process ? lastly who conducts this ?

.
he was the only commissioned officer killed in the incident but there are others too who fought with bravery they also deserve NH. But SJ will be enough for him. There are more stories of bravery in Swat Operation than this they should have been given NH.

.
1. Leading at front
2. Beyond his duty

Lt. Yaser Abbass Shaheed has qualified both these criteria of Nishan e Haider.

He was Aeronautical Engineer and have not received any combat training but appoint as Leader of Rapid response force. He was
about km far from spot but reach in 3 min. after first blast. This is bitter truth that more than 18 weaponry security guard on the spot show no response on terrorist attack. Shaheed Yaser had took a weapon from security guard and solely fire against terrorist , other shaheed are driver, cook, and fireman who were came forward after Shaheed Yaser offense.
Terrorist has to be shun to blast other planes and choppers and dispersed.
In inquiry at Mehran base Board has recommended Nishan Haider after hearing witness. This was step down to Sitara e Jurat by Naval Command to save their gadhaar base commander, security officer and others who were assisting terrorist . Finally this was more step down by GHQ to Sitar e Bassalat.

.
how sacrifices "in the line of duty' are assessed / evaluated is beyond me. further why have 2 'parallel' systems of awards, one for WAR and the other for "OPERATIONS/CONFLICTS". in each case the person gives his life in-the-line-of duty and blood is shed. is the blood shed in WAR thicker than the blood shed in OPERATIONS/CONFLICTS???
there should be one system - NH/HJ/SJ/TJ. dont dilute the sacrifices.
