Lee Kuan Yew, the Father of Singapore has described Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa as a Sinhalese Extremist and what happened in Sri Lanka in 2009 as ethnic cleansing.

th

Specifically Lee Kuan Yew has said of President Rajapaka and Sri Lanka, “[Sri Lanka] is not a happy, united country. Yes, they have beaten the Tamil Tigers this time, but the Sinhalese who are less capable are putting down a minority of Jaffna Tamils who are more capable. They were squeezing them out. That’s why the Tamils rebelled. But I do not see them ethnic cleansing all two million-plus Jaffna Tamils. The Jaffna Tamils have been in Sri Lanka as long as the Sinhalese.”

Plate: “So what Asia saw was ethnic cleansing?”

Lee: “That’s right.”

Plate: “They [the Tigers] will come back, you think?”

Lee: “I don’t think they are going to be submissive or go away. The present President of Sri Lanka believes he has settled the problem; Tamil Tigers are killed and that is that.”

Plate: “See, that’s really a fascinating point, because to the extent that we have any sense of who you are at all, we think of you as this hard-boiled force first guy. But in fact your system of government is much softer, consensual and intelligent, whereas what the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka are doing is a caricature of an LKY who never existed.”

Lee: “I’ve read his speeches and I knew he was a Sinhalese extremist. I cannot change his mind.”

‘Mahinda Rajapaksa Is A Sinhalese Extremist’ – Lee Kuan Yew | Colombo Telegraph

wow, I never knew that Mr.Lee was so much against Sri Lankan government.

only world leader who was pro Tamil and said Tamils deserve a Homeland

Lee Kuan Yew: the Man and His Ideas, a book published in 1998
In talking of Sri Lanka, this is what Lee Kuan Yew says: -

"We have got to live with the consequences of our actions and we are responsible for our own people and we take the right decisions for them. You look at the old Philippines. The old Ceylon. The old East Pakistan and several others. I have been to these countries and places. When I went to Colombo for the first time in 1956 it was a better city than Singapore because Singapore had three and a half years of Japanese occupation and Colombo was the centre or HQ of Mountbatten's Southeast Asia command.

And they had sterling reserves. They had two Universities. Before the war, a thick layer of educated talent So if you believe what American liberals or British liberals used to say, then it ought to have flourished. But it didn't.

One-man one-vote led to the domination of the Sinhalese majority over the minority Tamils who were the active and intelligent fellows who worked hard and got themselves penalised. And English was out. They were educated in English. Sinhalese was in. They got quotas in two universities and now they have become fanatical Tigers. And the country will never be put together again.

No where has he stated Tamils needed a separate homeland.. They have a home land called Tamil Nadu anyway if they wish to migrate.. As usual the resident joker of the PDF plucking words out of thin air

Our glorious genius is out there taking maximum advantage of the situation despite being proven that he is living in his own universe.

If i'm not wrong sinhalese and tamil migrated from Indian subcontinent to sri lanka :D.

If you cant read my lips, then read between the lines

Lee Kuan Yew memoirs, ‘From Third World to First: The Singapore Story 1965-2000’. Devoting six pages to tracking Sri Lanka’s decline, he traces the tragedy thus:

"...He [SWRD Bandaranaike] had decided on nativism and...had become a champion of the Sinhala language. It was the start of the unravelling of Ceylon..."

"...During my visits over the years I watched a promising country go to waste. One-man-one vote did not solve a basic problem. The majority of some eight million Sinhalese could always outvote the two million Jaffna Tamils who had been disadvantaged by the switch from English to Sinhalese as the official language. From having no official religion, the Sinhalese made Buddhism their national religion. As Hindus, the Tamils felt dispossessed..."

"...I was impressed by his [Junius Richard Jayewardene’s] practical approach and was persuaded to visit Sri Lanka in April 1978. He said he would offer autonomy to the Tamils in Jaffna. I did not realise that he could not give way on the supremacy of the Sinhalese over the Tamils, which was to lead to civil war in 1983 and destroy any hope of a prosperous Sri Lanka for many years if not generations..."

"A political solution was the only way, one considered fair by the Jaffna Tamils and the rest of the world; then the Tamil United Liberation Front, the moderate constitutional wing of the Tamil home rule movement, could not reject it. I argued that his [Premadasa’s] objective must be to deprive the terrorists of popular support by offering the Tamils autonomy to govern themselves through the ballot box...It is sad that the country whose ancient name Serendip has given the English language the word ‘serendipity’ is now the epitome of conflict, pain, sorrow and hopelessness." (pp. 460-466)

One.. Sri Lankans are not just Sinhalese and Tamils, Two Sri Lanka belongs to all Sri Lankans there are no ethnically exclusive "homelands" on the island.. For Sinhalese and Moors and others Sri Lanka it self is thier homeland.. If certain Tamils think other wise they have a exclusive Tamil Homeland called Tamil Nadu already existing just across the Palk straight.. Easy.. :enjoy:

wrong, Sinhalaese are from Bangladesh, Tamil are the true natives of Lanka
Really, where have learnt that, guess it is from an alternative universe.:pop:

Yes, people who still want a separate entity are welcome to migrate at any time, otherwise stay and enjoy being with us.

@waz @Horus @Oscar @WebMaster ... Why is this creep given a mandate to make up thread headings as he pleases and post total irreverent topics to the subject and use hyper emotional words to attract unwarranted attention ? If another poster have done this he/She would have been warned and yet banned.. This joker seems to be getting away with repeated offences

Isn't it obvious, it's an island so people must was travelled from mainland using boats to Sri Lanka(island).

Yes they did.. Everybody (Groups of people) that lives there migrated there at one time or another.. To say otherwise is stupid.. But that does not give a right for any party to claim exclusivity of a part of the island for some separatist ideology, The island belongs to all Sri Lankans

Its nice to see a conversation going to hell whenever nationalism is challenged. I am no fan of LTTE or its violent ways, but Mr. Lee was right. The sinhalese nationalism combined with buddhist extremism was the biggest contributing factor which lead to disfranchisement of Tamils. Let us not forget the violence was used as a mean to an end by both sides, but it was the Sinhalese nationalist sentiments that started it all. As far as Tamil Nadu for tamils argument is concerned, its rubbish.
