Two appointments are worth noticing among total 6 newly promoted Lt. Generals. First, the appointment of former DG Rangers Sindh, Lt. Gen. Rizwan Akhtar as DG ISI while other one is appointment of Lt. Gen. Naveed Mukhtar as Corps Commander Karachi. Rizwan Akhtar, before this new appointment, was in-charge of operation going on in Karachi and now he will have first hand experience about the challenges of the most restive and biggest metropolis in the country. The appointment of Lt. Gen. Naveed Mukhtar as new Corps Commander Karachi is also significant as he earlier served as DG Counter Terrorism wing in ISI and is well equipped first hand knowledge and intelligence about the terrorist groups working in the city. Both these appointments highlight obvious fact that Pakistani military establishment threat matrix contains unrest in Karachi at top of threats perceived internally. Both DG ISI and Corps Commander Karachi will be far better positions to coordinate intelligence and operational efforts to bring some order in law & order meltdown.

Well it looks like that is going to be both on Tribal areas and Karachi in fact it looks like after NW Karachi will be main focus

we need 'lean and mean' generals and not ones who just sit in their comfy offices.

What policy is that ?

So far innocent people are being killed every day in Karachi while every gang, every terrorist outfit or every militant faction of a political party rages on with their private wars ! :(

Operation against Militants specially militants of Political parties and now he is chief of ISI it would be easy for him to take them out than before

Fight in Karachi will be an ugly one but it has to be done. I hope we could take help from Brazilian Army. The cleared Rio's Fevelas a few years ago with great success.

No Brazil is still facing massive drug wars and gang wars

brazilian fevelas dont have suicide bombers , hiding in masjids, madarasas ... if you start taking action against anyone in karachi , you will see a strong political reaction ... most of the criminals and terrorists associate with political parties .. army has to take this responsibility , and flush everyone regardless of their cast and religion or political background ... not just that , army needs to free those no go areas like Afghan basti , Liyari and sohrab goat ... these areas are so fcuked up that even rangers cant do sh!t about them ,or go inside .. they are ruling these areas according to their fcuking tribal law ..

Lt Gen Naveed looks pretty young!

On the other hand my view is that how can Rizwan Akhtar counter this terrorism thing in whole Pakistan if he cant do it in Karachi...!

Gen. Zaheer ul Islam was also serving as DG. C in the ISI, before being promoted n posted as Corps. Comm. V Corp (khi).

The fight in the favelas was very dirty, suspects were summarily executed without trial because the BOPE knew that if these guys come back out of prison, the continent will not be safe for them. If we go into Karachi, that's how its going to have to be; go in, kill, come back out with your hands clean, no witnesses.
I don't believe our nation has still managed to develop the stomach for this course of action, it will require civil society, government and civil administration to turn a blind eye until the mess has been cleaned up, until then, it will remain impossible for anyone in Karachi to buy a new bike and clock 500km before having it snatched, it will be impossible for a decent trader to earn a profit and see his family alive at the same time, it will be impossible for any police officer to actually do any police work and I'm just scratching the surface here, Karachi is a festering rot, the sooner we amputate the gangrenous part, the sooner we can talk about resuscitating the rest of the city.
