ISLAMABAD: Contrary to Rehman Malik’s recent claim that Abu Jundal, the trainer of the 26/11 Mumbai attackers was an Indian intelligence agent, the Indian authorities had informed their Pakistani counterparts several months ago that Jundal has confessed during interrogations that he had been arrested from the Muzaffarabad headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba along with Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.
However, he was let off the hook by Pakistan’s intelligence establishment and allowed to proceed to Saudi Arabia in 2010, only to be arrested and deported to India on June 25, 2012.
While conceding that the Mumbai attacks were the work of the LeT, a Pakistani minister had stated during his recent Indian visit that Abu Jundal was an operative of an elite Indian intelligence agency. He further claimed that a Pakistani-American militant David Headley had conspired with al-Qaeda leader Commander Ilyas Kashmiri and three Indian terrorists, Abu Jundal, Zabiuddin and Faheem Ansari to plot India’s worst terror attacks. However, Indian Home Secretary RK Singh described minister’s remarks as “ridiculous”, saying “Abu Jundal was working with the LeT on Pakistani soil when the Mumbai attacks were carried out.” The Pakistani interior ministry’s lack of knowledge can be gauged from the fact that it had treated Zabiuddin and Abu Jundal as two persons, not knowing that they are but one – Syed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal.
Diplomatic circles in Islamabad are simply stunned over interior ministry’s lapse on such an important issue despite the fact that it is regularly briefed by the agencies, being the one which deals with India on behalf of the Pakistan government as far as the 26/11 attacks are concerned. According to these circles, India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) had informed the Pakistani Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) through a dossier several months ago that Abu Jundal has confessed during interrogations being the handler of the ten LeT attackers who had carried out the Mumbai carnage of 2008. As per the Indian communiqué, Jundal told his interrogators that he had been arrested by the Pakistani agencies from the Muzaffarabad headquarters of the LeT on December 7, 2008 along with Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and several others. As per Jundal’s statement, he remained under the supervision of his handlers for more than a year, during which he was allowed to hold a few meetings with Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Jundal told his interrogators that Lakhvi was being guarded in the Pindi jail by the LeT militants and that he remained constantly in touch with the Lashkar leaders and cadres even after the Mumbai attacks. He described the LeT’s chain of command in detail, confirming that the jehadi group was still being led by Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, followed by Lakhvi. It was in early 2010 that he was asked by his handlers to leave Pakistan for Saudi Arabia and to stay off the radar. Jundal was provided two identities, one for internal use in Pakistan and one for abroad.
According to the findings of the Indian National Investigation Agency, Zabiuddin alias Abu Jundal was issued a fake Pakistani passport [Number - QL1790941) in the name of Riyasat Ali which he had used to travel to Riyadh in 2012. The passport was issued in January 2009 from Karachi. His residence address in the fake passport was shown as Daoukay Village, Rehman Pura Post Office, Sheikhupura District. In fact, Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal’s name was also there in the list of the 50 most wanted criminals who were allegedly being sheltered in Pakistan and whose names were released by India on May 21, 2011. Basically an Indian citizen, he had played a key role in the planning of the 26/11 attacks.
Jundal’s role in the Mumbai carnage can be gauged from the fact that he was among those giving orders by the minute to the attackers or directing them on their cell phones from a control room in Karachi during the 2008 bloodbath. Ajmal Kasab, who was sent to the gallows recently also told an Indian court he and nine other Mumbai attackers were tutored by Jundal on how to speak with a Hindi accent to avoid being detected in India. The Indian investigators had been looking for him for years, especially after he was named by several other suspects in the 26/11 attacks, but they never knew his exact role in the massacre.
It was in the first quarter of 2012 that the Indian authorities came to know that Jundal was living in Saudia on a Pakistani passport. He might have remained in the shadows had he not decided to open a Facebook account in his real name to find new recruits for the LeT. He was also using his account to contact his accomplices, a few of whom were already under scrutiny by the global intelligence community. The spooks followed his electronic trail to Riyadh and eventually approached the Saudi government for his arrest and extradition. Both India and Pakistan lobbied for his release into their custody, but India finally clinched the arrest by providing DNA samples from his Indian family members who live in Maharashtra. Abu Jundal subsequently told his interrogators that he had gone to Saudi Arabia to raise more funds and recruit more Indian Muslims as militants.
According to Jundal, Major (retd) Sajid Mir, an ISI handler of the Mumbai attackers, had overseen the entire Mumbai operation which was code named as the “Karachi Project”. Going by his statement, one Major (retd) Abdur Rehman and Major (retd) Sajid Mir had visited India as cricket fans and had conducted reconnaissance of important sites in Delhi and Mumbai. Both had traveled on Pakistani passports bearing fake names, and had come to watch a cricket match between India and Pakistan at Mohali in 2005. Jundal had further named three serving ISI officers, Colonel Shah, Major Samir Ali and Major Iqbal, as being involved in the 26/11 strikes.
According to him, Major Iqbal provided Rs2.5 million for the boat that was initially purchased for travelling through sea from Karachi to Mumbai. As far as Major Samir Ali’s role is concerned, he had allegedly arranged the logistics for the ‘marine training’ of the ten LeT operatives at the Karachi harbor besides providing two cartons of AK-47 bullets to the terrorists who were to carry out the Mumbai attacks. According to Jundal, during the 26/11 attacks, Hafiz Saeed was present in the Karachi control room along with Zaki Lakhvi and his second-in-command Muzammil Butt. The control room was set up close to the Malir Cantonment and was destroyed immediately after the arrest of Lakhvi and his associates.

Remember Hafees Said? Forget about terrorists claimed by India, last time I checked, Pakistani Taliban members are even not prosecuted in your country. How many terrorists have been convicted in Pakistan?
