Kolkata Unrest in North-Eastern states and Bengal’s border districts on the terrorist organisation’s agenda

The interrogation of suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative, Abu Taher, who was arrested recently by the Special Task Force of Kolkata police, has revealed that the outfit plans to set up a new organisation in India and has been recruiting youths in the past few months.

“The LeT has opened a new wing called Tanzeem-e-Mohammedi to create unrest in the North-Eastern states and the districts of West Bengal bordering Bangladesh,” a senior officer of STF told The Indian Express.

Taher was specifically given the responsibility of securing funding to build up the separate organisation through recruitments in Bengal and other North Eastern states, the officer said.

He added, “We are trying to get more details about this new organisation and its purpose.”

Taher was arrested from crowded Sealdah station on Saturday evening by sleuths of the STF after the police was tipped off.

“Taher used to get funding from Abdul Karim Tunda, a Pakistan-based LeT operative, and he frequented Bengal to recruit people for this organisation. We believe that he has already indoctrinated and recruited some youths from Bengal,” the senior officer said. Tunda used to regularly supply Taher with indoctrination literature and other logistical support.

According to STF sources, the sleuths have reason to believe that Taher had links with several serial blasts that rocked the country last year. He is considered to be a very big catch and the STF claims that they were looking for him for a long time. The STF hopes to get a lot of information from him.

STF sources also said that Tunda used to pay Rs 50, 000 per month as remuneration to Taher. He received separate funding for expenses to set up the organisation.

So far Taher has recruited nearly 30 people from Bangladesh bordering districts like North 24 Parganas, Cooch Behar, Malda, North and South Dinajpur, Murshidabad and Nadia, the STF source said.

“We have definite proof that he was not only involved in the blast in Guwahati but also had a plan to conduct series of blasts in North East,” the source added.

Taher was born in Katihar in Bihar but his family later shifted to North Dinajpur where he was brought up and in 1999 he sneaked into Bangladesh and then went to Pakistan. There he met LeT operative Abdul Karim Mollah and received training in explosive handling at Murid.

“There is an ample proof that this man was one of the key players in supplying and handling explosives that were used in the series of blasts that occurred in different parts of the country last year,” STF sources added. Two passports—- one of Bangladesh and the other of Pakistan — had been recovered from Taher.
