A sessions court in Lahore on Tuesday sentenced a Christian man to death after convicting him of sending text messages containing “blasphemous content”.

Asif Pervaiz, 37, has been in custody since 2013 fighting blasphemy charges that were levelled against him by the supervisor of the garment factory he once worked at. The supervisor had accused him of sending derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to him in a text message.

The court order issued by Additional Sessions Judge Mansoor Ahmad Qureshi, seen by Reuters, said Pervaiz would first serve a three-year prison term for “misusing” his phone to send the derogatory text message. Then “he shall be hanged by his neck till his death.” He was also fined Rs50,000, the order said.

Pervaiz's lawyer Saiful Malook told AFP that Pervaiz has denied all charges against him and had merely forwarded the text messages in question.

“This case should have been thrown out by the judge,” Malook said, adding he would appeal the verdict in the Lahore High Court.

“He has already spent seven years awaiting the court's decision. Who knows how many more years he will have to wait till this is over?”

Pervaiz claims his supervisor, who had been trying to convert him to Islam, had accused him of blasphemy after he quit his factory job.

Human rights groups say blasphemy laws are often misused to persecute minorities or even against Muslims to settle personal rivalries. Such accusations can end up in lynchings or street vigilantism.

Up to 80 people are known to be imprisoned in the country on such charges — half of whom face life in prison or the death penalty — according to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

In July, a US citizen of Pakistani origin on trial over blasphemy allegations in Peshawar was shot dead in a courtroom by a teenager who told bystanders he killed him for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

Since his arrest, the alleged shooter has been glorified as a “holy warrior” by supporters and thousands of people have rallied to demand his release.

Honestly, I want to see pakistan hanging a hindu or a chrisfian for blasphemy.

Important lesson for everyone : Never forward to anyone any type of Blasphemy material. Because you never know its trap for you, even for the sake of news or post or forwarding information etc .. if anyone forward you delete it right away and don't tell or discuss with anyone.

Lol, why would we do that? I doubt our Hindus and Christians dare to do blasphemy openly while in Pakistan :)

We have things under-control, unlike you weaklings ;) Forget Muslims who are too mench for Hindus, even Christians are cucking hindus and converting your tribals left and right to no end.

Stop cow slaughter in indian South and Northeast before worrying about us hanging Christians for blasphemy. As for Hindus, we dont want to hang them----we want to save their afterlife like this

I guess this is one of the mindsets which gives bad name to Islam.

LOL, what bad name?

Islam is the fastest-growing religion on the planet even by net-conversions, according to PEW (Mashallah) and has accomplished THE fastest-ever growth of any religion in 10,000 years of recorded human history. No other religion got THIS big, THIS global, & THIS widespread in this less of a time. It took Christianity 2000 yrs to reach 2 billion followers. Islam did it in just 1400 yrs. Its the same in proportional terms too btw. Christianity reached 25% of the global population almost 1850 years, Islam did it in 1400 years (or 1410, depending on which calendar-reference you use).

No other religion (except Islam & Christianity) in history even comes close in terms of the colossal size, global influence/power, and worldwide reach---so lets not even compare Islam to other minnows (Hindusim, Sikhism, Judaism, Buddhism, you name it).

Hindus just hate Islam for past humiliations and domination, but that's all they can do. Vent out their hate on internet. Beyond that, they have no power to even take back Azad Kashmir from 10x smaller Muslim nation....let alone get their 'civilizational revenge' they so yearn for

And the world (mostly rightwing Christians of West) hate Islam because Islam is the most powerful and influential global religious force today as it is THE only religion that has successfully defeated secular liberalism. Liberalism, sexual revolution, secularism swept away all religions (esp Christianity) and rendered in powerless and irrelevant. Islam is the largest *practiced* religion on the world and the only religion that forms the basis of statehood of multiple regional powers across continents (Saudi Arabia, Iran, nuclear-armed Pakistan, Algeria, Egypt, Malaysia etc are all Islamic states in one form or the other). Moreover, Islam also forms the source of the legal-code of billions of people at the state level and so on.

Hindus and right-wing Christians can only dream what Islam has actually accomplished across the globe. Hence, hatred, jealousy, and frustration on their part. Keep at it, we don't care :coffee:

Read the latest world value survey (2017-2020) data release that happened few weeks ago. WVS is the largest, most comprehensive cross-national time-series data set in modern social science. Guess what? AS ALWAYS, the new data revealed Muslims to be THE MOST practicing and observant followers of their faith while rest of the religions keep getting secularized.

Read the discussion of the result by experts in ForeignPolicy magazine. Alhamdulillah and Mashallah to all this :)

My two cents are not directed towards you as an individual but a general outline as to why we should not be defensive about our laws.

I can already see this may be a B.S case, besides who gives a flying f to session courts. Once the case hits the high court the decision will be taken on merit and most likely he will be set free, no matter how pathetic our judicial system is it is still there. High courts/supreme courts have already dissected such cases in detail and most of the times the people have been let free.

Even the mullahs know that they can protest as much as they want but people in general don't listen to them anymore. At least we have a functioning legal system, crippled it may be but still working. We don't have a "mob lynching society", where cow vigilantes would kill an entire family including children on the suspicion of consuming cow meat.

We have a legacy colonial era legal system all three countries and no one has been able to rewrite the entire codex, it has its complication, it is delayed but it still functions unlike a few countries I know.

We don't need to justify to people of any other country why "Blasphemy law" is in Pakistan, every country has its red lines which no one is supposed to cross this is ours. If a Parliament duly elected by the people of Pakistan upholds the law then it simply means we as Pakistanis have chosen this law as our red line and no one else should dare to challenge, we don't advise others on what type of laws they should have nor would we entertain.

BTW: I have dared many people over the decades while living in Europe try and say/utter things against "holocaust" it still carries capital punishment and yet the champions of humanity haven't changed it, who would kill a million humans over "WMD" in Iraq and yet lecture us about our "inhuman law"

@WebMaster , @The Eagle , @waz
one of the unfortunate side effects of site upgrade seems to me that the junk you guys have "banned" from the forum has been allowed to post here again, I don't envy you guys you have more work at hand but people like the OP should they be tolerated on a Pakistani forum well, I don't know....

Good point.

A complication exists. I quote Wikipedia :
Pakistan inherited blasphemy laws enacted by British colonial authorities and made them more severe between 1980 and 1986, when a number of clauses were added by the military government of General Zia-ul Haq, in order to "Islamicise" the laws
Zia's legacy need not really be continued.

Wikipedia, phhh, I trust this website infested with sanghi drones as far as I could throw the stone. Just click the "view history" page of the same link find out who contributed to the edit let me quote few name epereton, monkbot, bellowhead678, internetacrhivebot, suncreator, minicoyamini, kautilya 3, pirseb hard to find any mulsim contributor so it is about bashing Pakistan with a view to bash Islam.

Now the references used in this sh*t of an article at a glance 1 and 11 have been used few time and they are what?? a bbc refernce and an artilce by an islam hater.

Every society takes its time to maturity we are taking that time but we are in the right direction.

And which sect is growing fastest among Islam?

The published research data-sets (with which I'm working these days but that's besides the point for now) dont have that answer globally. We do have answers about Islamic sub-set growth in some regions. For example, until 2016, Salafism was growing the fastest in Germany according to available data (partly because it started from such a low base).

Some Shia and Ahmedi sects are also growing quite fast in Africa...especially in the hinterlands which have been ignored by mainstream Sunni dawah efforts for quite some time now.

Although, overall, Sunni Islam is the largest single religious denomination on the planet and it will remain so for the foreseeable future, Inshallah!

Sunni Islam = 85%-90% of global Islam (especially as Iran's population growth slows and Sunni population in Africa booms)

Yet no one follows the sect of prophet muhammed....oh he had no sect. Funny that
