DGCA summons Kingfisher officials, govt says no bailout

MUMBAI: Kingfisher's top officials, including its CEO Sanjay Aggarwal, were summoned by the DGCA on Monday to explain the largescale disruptions in the operations. The Union civil aviation has made it clear that the government will not bail out the airline.

Kingfisher Airlines operations continued to be disrupted for the third consecutive day with around 14 flights cancelled Monday, a day after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) took a serious note of the developments and asked the airline CEO to appear before them on Tuesday, an airport official said.

Meanwhile, the government has ruled out any bailout plan for the cash-strapped airline. Civil aviation minister Ajit Singh said: " The government is not going to have any bailout plan for Kingfisher Airlines. Government is not going to ask banks or private industry for that matter."

"Recently government had seized their bank accounts also. So our first concern is that flights which are ongoing, passenger safety should not be compromised and then let us see what reply they give. DGCA is inquiring into it," Singh said.

He said Kingfisher is facing several financial problems.

"Day before yesterday, as they did not give salary to their employees for many months, people went on strike in Kolkata. Naturally, the flights got cancelled," he said. DGCA's role, he said, was to see that there are no questions on passenger safety.

Kingfisher was holding talks with banks and they have given their business plan. Government has made some changes recently including in respect of aviation fuel policy whereby airlines could directly import jet fuel, Singh noted.

More than 20 flights were cancelled today. About 80 flights of the carrier from six metro cities did not operate yesterday leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. The ailing carrier had till late last evening failed to file a report on the number of flights it had cancelled since Friday night to the DGCA.

Whats the opinion of you guys on this?

Should Govt bail out Kingfisher for the sake of cheap air travel in India or let it die? Except Indigo, no other airline is making any profit in India including the white elephant Air India.

Well there's no point in bailing out any airline for that matter. Why should our money go into someone's pockets who is earning for himself?

Rather if the government can do something about its ruthless socialist-era taxation policies, airlines will benefit a lot and aviation industry will be saved. The sole reason is taxation issues. Around half of what airlines earn goes in tax which they cannot escape. Add to that Air India's useless price wars that caused the aviation industry crunch.

Go Air is pretty good too. They don't eat into another airline's market and that's the reason they're successful.

It's survival of the fittest.

If kingfisher does not have what it takes to survive and grow in a competitive industry, it might as well perish.

Indian taxpayer's money should be spent on building schools and hostpitals, not so that Siddharth Mallya could gift Dipika Padukone a Rs. 16cr flat in Mumbai.

Its easy to say as we are not running it, but don't forget its bcs of these airlines common man can fly in India. One guest in the debate I saw said "Shut down the Kingfisher and other such airlines, but also prepared to pay 20,000 rupees for Delhi-Mumbai flight".

True, but our tax money also goes to bailing out ever loss making Air India.

There are several news report showing that vijay malya has enough wealth that if he really wants he can pullout his airlines out of this mess in no time

The 'common' Indian travels by train and bus and bullock carts and bicycles.

The 'common' Indian does not earn in a month what these airlines charge for a flight.

Are you sure you're talking about that same common Indian?

True, but our tax money also goes to bailing out ever loss making Air India.

Yes and as a result, I and you own a share in Air India. I don't think we can say that about Kingfisher.

Although I do believe that Air India should be divested.

A govt. has no business running an airline.

So who are the guys travelling in the various airlines in India..they can't all be elites.

I don't know how that helps as we don't get any dividend, but if Govt bails out a private airline Govt will also own shares in that enterprise.... just as UK did with RBS.

This is what I'm also hearing. but, is it so?

The owner might have the money, but the big question is will he be able to depart from it??? He might be waiting for some government help or some other private help.

PIA was 1 of the finest airlines..but no thx to the corrupt govts over the yrs,it has gone down the drain..as for the other airlines not bad.
