‘Militant’ killed while planting bomb in Khyber

KHYBER: A suspected militant was killed when an explosive device he was trying to plant along the roadside went off in the early hours on Monday, the police said.

They said the incident took place at around 2am in Sultankhel area.

Local residents also confirmed the incident and said that they heard a huge bang at around 2am.

The police said that they cordoned off the locality after receipt of information about the incident, and also closed the main Peshawar-Torkham Road.

They said that the suspected militant died instantly in the blast, while they recovered a Kalashnikov, a hand grenade and a remote from near the body.

The body was first taken to the Landi Kotal Hospital for autopsy, and later shifted to a morgue in Peshawar as it could not be identified.

The main road remained closed till 11am with local residents raising doubts about the local police’s ability to tackle such a situation. They alleged that the body of the suspected militant remained on the spot for nine hours.

Policeman martyred in Dera attack

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A policeman was martyred when unknown assailants opened fire on him in the jurisdiction of Hathala police station here on Monday, an official said.

He said that constable Nazar Khan of Takwara village was going to Kulachi tehsil for performing security duty at a branch of the National Bank of Pakistan when unknown assailants targeted him. He said that the assailants escaped the scene after the shooting.

Police personnel reached the site soon afterwards and shifted the body to Mufti Mahmood Hospital.

Terrorist killed during intelligence-based operation in Dera Ismail Khan: ISPR

A terrorist was killed and another injured during an intelligence-based operation by security forces in the Kulachi area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district on Wednesday, according to the military’s media affairs wing.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement an “intense fire exchange” took place between security forces and militants during the operation and consequently, “one terrorist was sent to hell while one got injured”.

According to the ISPR, weapons and ammunition were found in custody of the slain terrorist, who “remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces and killing of innocent civilians”.

The security forces conducted intelligence-based operations (IBOs) in two districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday which resulted in the killing of eight terrorists and apprehension of five terrorists and their facilitators, the military said in a statement.

"During conduct of first operation in general area Jani Khel, Bannu district, intense fire exchange took place between own troops and terrorists. Resultantly, six terrorists were killed while five were apprehended, the military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said.

“These terrorists were involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces, including facilitation of motorcycle-borne suicide attack on a military convoy at Jani Khel on August 31, in which nine brave sons of soil laid their lives,” it shared.

Meanwhile, in another operation in general area Datta Khel, North Waziristan district, two terrorists were also killed in a fierce encounter between security forces and the terrorists.

“Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from killed terrorists,” it said, adding that sanitisation of the surrounding areas was being carried out to neutralise any other terrorist found in the area.

The statement further said that the locals of the area appreciated the operation. "Security forces of Pakistan remain determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism,” vowed the ISPR.

Troops effectively engaged terrorists’ location. However, during the operation, Sepoy Shakeel Shafqat (age 21 years, resident of District Khanewal), having fought gallantly, embraced Shahadat.

Attacks on two Lakki police stations, jail repulsed

LAKKI MARWAT: The police claimed to have repulsed terrorist attacks on two police stations and district jail in Lakki Marwat city on Tuesday night.

An official said a police station, a police post and the district jail building came under simultaneous attacks. He said the assailants used light and heavy weapons in a bid to breach police installations and the prison. “Policemen deployed there were fully alert as they had noticed the movement of terrorists with the help of thermal security cameras,” he claimed.

The official said the law enforcers retaliated to the attack with light and heavy weapons, forcing the assailants to flee.

“The cops exhibited unprecedented gallantry and repulsed the attack before reinforcements could reach them,” he maintained, saying no casualties took place in the gunfight between terrorists and the police.

Local residents said they heard explosions followed by gunfire at midnight. “I woke up with an explosion and then spent the night without sleep,” said a citizen.

He said his family members, including children, also could not sleep due to heavy exchange of fire.

Another citizen said the gunfight between terrorists and law enforcers panicked the residents settled in the proximity of the police station, the city police post and the jail.

After the attack police beefed up the security and enhanced patrolling in the area.

A search operation was also launched to hunt down terrorists and their facilitators.

Meanwhile, district police officer Tariq Habib visited the police station, the city police post and the jail, met policemen there and appreciated them for repulsing terrorists’ attacks.

- In Chitral, a successful security forces operation led to the arrest of four individuals connected to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and a substantial cache of arms and ammunition was seized.

- Acting on intelligence received, security forces conducted a raid at the residence of a TTP facilitator located in the border village of Chitral.

- This operation thwarted a significant terrorist plot by uncovering hidden weapons and ammunition within the facilitator's residence.

- Additionally, during the operation, four more facilitators were apprehended, and they are currently under investigation, with further arrests anticipated.

- Among the recovered weaponry were 53 bundles of Bcrd's, 485 submachine gun (SMG) bullets, 12 magazines, 64 kilograms of explosive.
