Khap Panchayat bans jeans, mobile for girls in 46 villages in Uttar Pradesh

Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh: A Khap Panchayat in Shoram village in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district on Wednesday passed a bizarre diktat, which bans girls from wearing jeans, using mobile phones and the internet.

Union Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptullah condemned the ban, saying the panchayat should remember they were raised by a woman.

"All those men were born of a woman, they have forgotten that they were raised by a woman. The day they will think about this, they will stop giving such statements," she added.

Women's rights activists have also condemned this move.

"I think the district administration of each area and district, especially in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh should work towards a blanket ban on such village councils. I mean all of the councils should get a very strict directive that they cannot do this and there should be a blanket ban actually on all such panchayats which are so regressive," said National Commission for Women (NCW) member Shamina Shafiq, condemning the diktat.

Social activist Barkha Shukla also echoed similar sentiments and said such diktats need not be paid heed to.

"I am absolutely against this. The khap panchayats who come up with such baseless rules, one need not pay heed to them. Our country should surge ahead the way it is doing," said Shukla.

The ban will have an affect on 46 villages in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. Panchayat leader Chaudhary Naresh said jeans are a part of western culture and therefore, should not be allowed in India as they spoil the society.

"The clothes that our mothers and sisters used to wear, do they not exist anymore in the society? They should be a part of good society. The jeans that they wear today, it is spoiling the society and the environment. These things should not be allowed in India, they are part of western culture," said Naresh.

The council has also asked the residents not to use social networking websites such as WhatsApp and Facebook.

i demand invasion of india by 35+ militaries of nato and killing of all retarded and regressive citizens of india... this will be in-keeping with nato policy of invading nations where "human rights violations" occur... let nato effect regime-change in india... after all, there has been clear human rights violations in india for 67 years... and yet, the criminals roam free...

but before that, let me see indian paramilitary kill these village idiot elders, like they have been killing naxalites.

Government can't do anything to do remove rural mindset otherwise it will see stiff opposition, that can be changed by educating the people about it.

the only real way of change is total revolution... that has been the way of humanity... every revolutionary society changed overnight... where has india changed in 67 years?? there is another thread running... "honor killing" of a delhi college lady by her "respectable and saintly" parents.

in any socialist society, such crimes wouldn't be possible.

as for villages, turn every village into a city with "city lifestyle"... no trace should remain of rural culture... do so with iron hand... immediate change.

Its a woman's right to wear whatever they want, except off course if she wants to wear an Abaya or hijab thats where woman's right end in favor of secularism

Its called establishing a dictatorship, not revolution.

so, what is revolution then??

whatever you may choose to call it, it brought progress to libya and africa and eventually to the world ( through green book and support for world independence movements and revolutionary movements )... a progress not seen by india since 1947.

i don't see why you refuse to read works of common sense... works of direct appeal to someone's humanity... works which make you emotional.

please do read "green charter" once... no sensible person can refuse the humanity in it... ( Refworld | Libya: Great Green Charter of Human Rights of the Jamahiriyan Era ).
