Bow to demand or face non-stop hartal: Khaleda

Khaleda Zia asks the election commission to resign
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday warned that her party would launch a non-stop anti-government campaign including shutdowns and road and railway blockade if the non-partisan poll-time administration was not restored.
Khaleda slated the Election Commission terming it worthless, spineless and subservient to the government. She asked the EC to quit the office.
We will enforce non-stop hartal [shutdown] and blockade programmes after our ongoing rallies in divisional cities are over. Either restore caretaker government or find an escape route, she said while addressing a mammoth rally in Narsinhdi Balur Field.
Narsingdi district unit BNP President Khairul Kabir Khokon presided over the meeting while senior leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliances addressed the rally.
The crowds from the rally venue spilled onto several kilometres around. Some 500 arches were erected at different points on Khaledas way to Narsingdi.
Aspirant party leaders staged big showdowns ahead of national polls. Juvenile party leaders and activists chanted slogans with portraits of Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and their son Tarique Rahman standing on either side of the road leading to the rally venue.
Khaleda asked the government to place caretaker government bill in parliament and pass it to create a congenial atmosphere for a free and fair election. We are not pressing for any unjustified and illogical demand.
The BNP chief said they always wanted to overcome the political crisis through dialogue but she alleged that the premier blocked the path by putting forward her outline of holding election under her administration.
Even after that if you want to sit for talks over the restoration of caretaker government we will surely respond to it, she said.
Khaleda reiterated the stance of the 18-party alliance saying the BNP-led alliance would not participate in the polls if it was held under a partisan government. If we do not participate in the election we will also not allow you to hold a one-sided election.
Criticising the government for scrapping the caretaker government system she said the ruling party did it to hang on to power forever.
She blamed the Awami League for unilaterally abolishing the caretaker government system without consulting other political parties and civil society members.
She said a fair election is not possible under this worthless and government-subservient election commission.
In her 42-minute speech, Khaleda described the governments misdeeds, corruption, and repressive acts.
Depicting a sordid state of the country, Khaleda promised people that if BNP returned to power it would work for people and carry out massive development activities.
Apparently opposing the foreign countrys intervention in countrys politics Khaleda said: We are least bothered about who says what. We are with the people. Which country is saying what matters very little to us.
She vowed that BNP, if voted to power, would not indulge in the politics of vengeance rather it would do the politics of development.
Khaleda said they would introduce a new form of the government system without elaborating the nature of it. We will disclose it later.
If BNP comes back to power, she said, it will stamp out corruption saying corruption is their big enemy. Our lawmakers and ministers will have to submit their wealth information. So that they cant indulge in corruption.
