Kabul: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spent some time with Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) troops deployed to secure the Indian High Commission in Kabul in Afghanistan as he lauded their courage and dedication by complimenting them with a 'keep it up' remark.

The armed contingent of paramilitary ITBP force is stationed to guard the facility and diplomatic staff here since 2002.

"The Prime Minister replied to the greetings of the troops with a 'keep it up' remark when he visited the High Commission. He clicked photographs with the contingent in the presence of Indian Ambassador Amar Sinha," a senior force official in Delhi said.

The troops were donning their patchy and cloudy camouflage combat uniform when they met Mr Modi, who was in Afghanistan on way from Russia for a brief visit as he inaugurated the new Parliament complex of the country besides other official engagements.

Apart from the main Indian High Commission complex in Kabul, the ITBP also guards India's four consulates in Jalalabad, Mazar-e-Sharif, Kandahar and Herat.

The force has about 300 commandos (both men and women) stationed at these five locations keeping in mind the threat emanating from terror groups like al Qaeda to Indian assets and people working in the Mission.

Indian facilities have seen at least two major attacks in the past in this country, once at the High Commission in Kabul in 2008 which killed over 50 people and diplomatic staff and a deadly attack on the Consulate in Herat last year.

In May 2014, the Indian consulate in Herat was attacked by four heavily-armed gunmen, who were subsequently killed in an encounter. India had attributed the strike to terror elements "beyond the borders" of the war-torn country.

The Haqqani network is blamed for several deadly attacks against Indian interests in Afghanistan including the 2008 bombing of the Indian mission in Kabul.

Thats' good move on Modi's part. He doesn't forget about recognizing efforts of our security forces openly. This will further boost their morale.

Noble gesture from PM.
Nothing motivates a team more than knowing that top leadership truly appreciate your efforts.
ITBP is doing a really commendable job in very trying circumstances and this visit from PM should do them a world of Good.

As @Nilgiri stated, it is always heart-wrenching to put a face to the actions of such heroes- RIP sir.

India's missions in Afghanistan have been attacked numerous times (2008,9,10,14) but they are now safe thanks to the work of units like the ITBP (and not to forget the relentless work of the ANSF).

In 2014 the ITBP and ANSF repelled such an attack on the Indian Consulat in Herat:

@FrenchPilot One of the incidents that sticks out most is the 2010 attack on the Noor Guest House near the Indian Embassy in Kabul that housed the Indian Military Medical assistance team deployed to help the Afghan people. Major Laishram Jyotin Singh (pictured below) one of the team's doctors charged the terrorists holding AK-47s and wearing suicide vests head-on unarmed, pinned one down and struggled with him until he set off his vest.

A true hero, in Afghanistan to help the common people, died trying to protect his comrades- a doctor by name but a warrior to the core.

RIP. Such HEROES shouldn't be forgotten. NEVER. Had always hats off to the medics, risking their lives to save yours and other's. (Soldiers like civilians.)
-
We once fell in an ambush in Afghanistan, and remember how our medics literally rushed to take care of the American and Afghan soldiers injured, even during intense ennemy fires.
-
No words could explain the courage of the medics. Just like the deminers. Just like every soldiers i'd say.

A true Spanish hero

.
I hate see our brave "BHARAT MAA KAY BACHEY", loosing lives. He left protecting the one thing he loved, HIS DUTY TOWARDS HIS COUNTRY.

But what about the GRAVE pain his loved ones have to bear, for the rest of their lives. I pray the GOD, to ease their pain, even a little bit.

RIP

India needs to start building all body armour suit at war time efforts. We need it badly. This is ridiculous, we loose great men everyday, with proper training and tools, lives can be saved.

I will write to Mr Modi and Mr Parrikar, urging them to do something special for our Jawans, start and expedite manufacturing body armour suit and start saving lives right away.

It's so easy for them to give a award for their courageous lost lives. But it truly is beyond that. The many other lives that are attached to them, will be shattered too.

A very sincere wish my friend but for Major Laishram Jyotin Singh there was nothing that could have been done, he was on top of a suicide bomber as he detonated his vest.
