Kawasaki Heavy, Mitsubishi to supply train cars for Dhaka project

Aug 8, 2017

Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corp. have won a ¥40 billion order from a Bangladesh state-owned company to supply 144 train cars and maintenance depot equipment for the country’s first rapid transit railway system.

The state-run Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Co. is now building the MRT Line-6 to help ease chronic traffic congestion in the Bangladesh capital, one of the most crowded cities in the world, the two Japanese companies said. Dhaka has a population of over 15 million

The 20-km fully elevated route will connect the northern and southern parts of Dhaka. The construction is being financed by yen loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Kawasaki will be responsible for a range of matters from design, production and supply of train cars and major depot equipment to training operation and maintenance personnel at the Bangladesh company. Mitsubishi will manage commercial administration and partially supply depot equipment.

The seven Japanese civilians killed by terrorists at a restaurant in Dhaka in July 2016 were engaged in a feasibility study regarding the mass rapid transit project when the attack occurred.

I just hope Kawasaki/Mitsubishi Heavy Industries together will supply MRT-6 with very attractive, comfortable and highly functional train coaches with full time a/c, automatic sliding doors and wide windows that will be well liked by the commuters of Dhaka. Hope, by using these trains the people of BD will enjoy a part of high Japanese living standard. I still remember the day when I rode a Mitsubishi-made subway train in Seoul of South Korea many years ago. People there were very excited.

Those are the characteristics of any modern MRT trainset.

But Indian metro rail coach looks somewhat retro and rundown compared to Japanese metro rail coach. It may be due to Indian love for cheap and shoddy products.

You have to take into account the budget of each country.

True, I wish our Japanese metro rail coach will look like one running in Japan.I have read in an article in Bengali that, Dhaka metro will be the most modern in south Asia. It's platforms will be bigger with a lot of modern amenities, coach will also be modern and stylish. This is one of the reason, Dhaka metro will be relatively more costly then the Indian.

Is every Bangladeshi on this forum an idiot ?

Both those Japanese trains there looks like older stock, whereas that Bangalore one is newer. Nice try proving your point with a low res image though...

Sure, says the only country which spends $120 million per km of elevated metro...that's a lot of budget.

And it would run at 250 kph  Gosh, isn't there any limit to Bangladeshi delusions?

India has three Metro rolling manufacturing plants (Beml, Alstom, Bombardier) from where we source our rolling stock- and they even export rolling stock...keep fantasizing though.

It also the reason why your Satellite & Nuclear Power Station costs 3 times more than Indian ?

Russia is constructing 4,800 MW nuclear power plant in Egypt with a price tag of 30 billion USD.And we are getting 2,400 MW at 12 billion USD.So our project is nothing unusual.

And we could have given satellite project to India to lower the cost where scientist get a few thousand Rupee salary. But perhaps we wanted a real satellite not some Indian junk which have no reliability.Security consideration may also taken into account for not going to the Indian option.

And we get 2 GW (2X1000 MW) LWRs from Russia at just less than $6 billion (some say that include the payment for leasing the second Akula sub, but I won't consider that). You know how it happened- no skills or manufacturing base being locally available leads to larger project cost. Learn to live with it

Sure, they get paid well much unlike those petty sweatshop coolies- you even require expats in supervisory roles. And salaries are comparable to any other space agency in the world after adjusting for PPP factor.

Lol, quite rich coming from a dump with no scientific or industrial base. That term 'real satellite' cracks me up.

Kid, we make 6 tonne, high throughput satellites at less than $100 million, while you pay through your noses for a FSS sat.

3 tonne FSS satellites like your 'Bangabandu' are produced 'like sausages' at ISAC in Bangalore.

Stop talking crap as usual, the $6bn deal is for 2 additional VVER-1000 LWR reactors for an established plant (not a brand new plant from scratch). The UK is buying 3.6Gw Chinese nuclear plants for $20bn+ at Hinkley Point (were land was already aquired) were buying 2.4Gw brand new nuclear plant for $12bn.

How does it matter if it is for an established plant or a new plant ? They don't share much, other than location and few administrative/support infra.

We are building 5, 2X700 MW PHWRs for $2.2 billion each, but's that our own IP.

And how much do you think land acquisition would cost ? how much land do you think a NPP would need ?

The last two are certainly in use in the Japanese railways. I would love to see the same coaches in MRT-6. Look at the other one. Are you sure India has this kind of cheap and shoddy products? But, wait a moment. All the Indians have been shouting all along of their best quality trains. But, how come they use so cheap and lean coaches. Indians, as usual, love to talk much and are genuinely the bluff master of Asia.
