SRINAGAR (Reuters) - A suicide bomber who killed 44 paramilitary policemen in Indian-controlled Kashmir joined a militant group after having been beaten by troops three years ago, his parents told Reuters on Friday.

Pakistan-based Islamist militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) has claimed responsibility for Thursday's car bomb attack on a security convoy, the worst in decades of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, India's only Muslim majority state. It comes months before a key Indian general election.

Adil Ahmad Dar, 20, from the village of Lethipora in Indian Kashmir, rammed a car full of explosives into the convoy, escalating tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours, which both claim the rugged Himalayan region.

"We are in pain in the same way the families of the soldiers are," said farmer Ghulam Hassan Dar, adding that his son had been radicalised after police stopped him and his friends on the way home from school in 2016.

"They were stopped by the troops and beaten up and harassed," Dar said, adding that the students were accused of stone-pelting. "Since then, he wanted to join the militants."

A video released by the militant group after the attack showed his son, dressed in military fatigues and carrying an automatic rifle, detailing his plan to carry out the bombing.

His mother, Fahmeeda, corroborated her husband's account.

"He was beaten by Indian troops a few years back when he was returning from school," she said. "This led to anger in him against Indian troops."

Both parents said they were unaware of their son's plan to attack the convoy.

Dar did not return home from his work as a labourer on March 19 last year, Fahmeeda added. "We searched for him for three months," she said.

"Finally we gave up efforts to bring him back home."

Reuters could not independently verify the two accounts. A spokesman for India's home ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Anger over the attack is growing in India, which accuses Pakistan of backing separatist militants in divided Kashmir. Pakistan denies that, saying it offers only political support to the region's suppressed Muslim people.

Jaish, one of the most deadly groups operating in Kashmir, has been designated a terror group by the United Nations since 2001.

Ghulam Hassan Dar said he blamed politicians for his son's death.

"They should have resolved the issue through dialogue," he said, referring to the conflict over Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"It is they who are responsible for driving these youth into militancy. The sons of the common man die here, whether they are Indian troops or our sons

It would be fun to see how some lame Indians here would defend this Reuters news and how would they tell that it was actually ISI who sent operatives in IA uniforms to beat those boys returning from school.
But I hope some sane real secular Indians would be able to see that its an outcome of heinous crimes committed by Indian Army that has brought Kashmir to such a bloody mess and the way IA has stepped up its offensive same way Kashmiris have stepped up their resistance.

Even a superpower like US couldn't withstand Vietnam guerrilla warfare India stands no chance if Kashmiris decide to go all out against oppressors.

But he wasn't beaten by a teacher, he was beaten by the security forces of an occupying country. The narrative, and how the event is perceived, changes significantly because of the context.

Like I said, Pakistan can't brainwash millions - the conditions already exist in terms of India denying the Kashmiris self determination, and are exacerbated by events such as these.
There are no miliions only a few who pickup arms and I am sure you agree Pakistan can manage a few

Oh it's millions, and you, most Indians and the Indian government know it's millions, otherwise you would have agreed to a UN led plebiscite to resolve the dispute and call Pakistan's bluff years ago.

there is a lesson that if you antagonise even the weak will respond the best they can like they have here

not a pleasant outcome for sure but the Indian forces brutality got a blanket support by the Radicalized Internet Indian troll force and RSS mindset has become mainstream so there was no chance that any Indian will demand end of oppression of Kashmiris if really Indians consider Kashmiris as Indians as the land of Kashmir

now making Uri 1 Uri 2 and Uri 3 by Bollywood wont change the fact that whenever the oppressed and weak Kashmris will get a chance they will retaliate with or without Pakistani help

bitching at JuD, ISI and Pakistan army wont help the situation and wont bring peace.

What occurred in Kashmir was the same thing that occurred in Afghanistan - Afghanistan became the example, a violent uprising against an occupying force. But the underlying cause here is the occupation of Kashmir by India despite India herself committing to implementing UNSC Resolutions calling for a plebiscite for Kashmiris.

The problems in Kashmir you hear is limited to valley and that too in 3 districts rest of the state is peaceful.
If you guys are so sure of the will of the people why don't your troops pullout leaving India no reason to avoid plebiscite and call India bluff

You could use the SAME analogy for MASS KILLING in US by a student. But there is a HUGE Difference when a Foreign State/Agency uses the opportunity.

The Likes of Hamid Gul are Champions of this Theory who claim to have defeated even USSR.

Because India is likely to occupy the territory Pakistan vacates. Under the UNSC Resolutions, there needs to be an agreed upon (between India, Pakistan and the UN) plan for demilitarization. So once India engages with Pakistan and the UN to come to an agreement on phased demilitarization, we can go from there.

.
Sob story 101. Yeah he was the victim.

When police beats (for throwing stones obvsly), everyone should join a terror outfit and do a suicide attack on the police van.
