Srinagar: One jawan of paramilitary force died while eight others injured on Friday evening when militants attacked a convoy in Zakura, around 14 kilometres from Srinagar, PTI reported.
The militants attacked three Sashatra Seema Bal (SSB) vehicles, ferrying the personnel to their camp after performing law and order duties in the city, a security force official told PTI.
One jawan of the SSB was killed and 8 others were injured in the attack, the official said.
The injured have been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched search operations to track down the militants. According to CNN-News18, the firing started between 7.10 pm to 7.15 pm in Zakura, a densely populated town outside Srinagar, and the area may pose extra challenge for the security forces in neutralising the attackers. It is also home to a Bhabha Atomic Research Centre facility.
According to ANI, "the jawans fired back at the militants but couldn't fire aggressivley owing to the civilian population."
"The firing lasted around 20 minutes, and the security forces are searching for militants in the area," CNN-News18 reported. However, according to the channel, militants may have escaped the area.
This is the first militant attack in the city since the encounter at Nowhatta on August 15 in which a CRPF commandant was killed and nine other personnel were injured.
