KARACHI: Bombs and other explosives were recovered in a raid conducted by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Orangi Town on Monday evening while nearly a dozen suspects were detained in a targeted operation in New Karachi.
Officials and personnel of the CID’s Anti-Extremist Cell raided the hideout of militants from a banned outfit in Mominabad, Orangi Town. DSP Ali Raza, who heads the Anti-Extremist Cell, said that the raid was conducted on the basis of information they received about the presence of men working with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. He added that the suspect the militants were plotting attacks in the city and were in possession of explosive materials and bombs.
CID officials said that there was heavy firing from both sides and the militants managed to escape into the narrow streets of the neighbourhood.
According to Raza, they reached the hideout after a shootout and found a large cache of bombs, explosives and weapons that could have been used in attacks. The bomb disposal squad was called in immediately to defuse the explosive devices.
Initial reports suggest that around 100 kilogrammes of explosive material was recovered from the hideout along with three suicide jackets which were ready to be used, one bottle bomb, three hand grenades, 18 packet bombs, one Kalashnikov, 30 detonators, wires, six batteries, 13 cellphones, three remote controls, two vehicles with government number plates, three pistols, six uniforms belonging to security forces, including the police.
Arrests
Around 14 suspects were detained during an overnight targeted operation in different parts of New Karachi’s Bilal Colony, including Sector 5-E and 5-J. The entire neighbourhood was cordoned off during the operation – no one was allowed to enter or exit the area for at least three hours. They took 14 suspects into custody and also recovered weapons from some of them. The suspects were taken to an undisclosed location for further questioning.
Following the arrests, the families of the suspects held a protest and demanded that their loved ones should be released immediately. They claimed that the police had arrested innocent men.

The Express Tribune, New Karachi’s SP Chaudhry Asad said that the arrested men had no links to any political or religious party.
Meanwhile, in Lyari, the police recovered awan bombs and weapons during another targeted operation conducted near Gabol Park, Kalakot. Police officials claimed that the operation was conducted on information they received about the presence of gangsters in the area. They added that during the operation a gang member was injured but managed to escape. In total, the police recovered 24 awan bombs, four pistols and more than 800 ammunitions for sub-machine guns.
‘Supplier’ of fake medicines held
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) claimed to have arrested a key suspect involved in supplying fake and smuggled medicines in the city on Monday. The accused, identified as Imran alias Mama, was arrested during a raid conducted at Wahab Medicine Market in Saddar.
FIA officials also said that they had confiscated fake and smuggled medicines worth over Rs150 million from his possession.
They added that other suspects, namely Waheed, Sohail and Barkat, had been arrested for selling fake or smuggled medicines in previous raids. According to the officials, the FIA has initiated a crackdown against such criminals and the operation would continue until all suppliers involved in selling fake or smuggled medicines were arrested.

KARACHI: There has been a considerable decline in crime in the city due to the ongoing Karachi operation, said IG Sindh Ghulam Hyder Jamali. “The police have not just focused on militancy but also target killings, kidnappings and extortion.” He added that this had helped them arrests roughly 19,020 criminals and kill around 640 in encounters and raids.
According to details shared with the participants of the 41st Specialised Training Programme held at the National Police Academy at Central Police Office, nearly 1,311 target killers, 398 militants and 442 extortionists were taken into custody. The IG claimed that the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi was being conducted in coordination with the Rangers.
He said that in 2014, 177 police personnel were killed in Sindh out of which 132 were gunned down in Karachi, 26 in Hyderabad, 10 in Larkana, six in Shaheed Benazirabad, two in Sukkur and one in Mirpurkhas.
The IG also discussed different capacity building measures they will take – these include, intelligence-led policing, counter terrorism initiatives and specialised training courses. The forensics division will be upgraded with its own DNA laboratory. The existing Central Command and Control Center will also be upgraded and around 2,000 surveillance cameras will be installed at 400 locations in the city

KARACHI: Two suspects were killed by a resident of Quaidabad, while six alleged criminals were gunned down in two separate police encounters on Wednesday.
The two alleged robbers tried to loot a mobile phone shop in Quaidabad but when the shop owner, Zahid, resisted their attempts, they shot and injured him. They were fleeing from the scene on a motorcycle when Zahid opened fire at them with his licensed pistol and killed the two near the Murghi Khana stop. Zahid and the bodies were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment and autopsies. Zahid succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Police officials said that the deceased suspects have yet to be identified.
In a separate incident, four men were killed during an alleged encounter with the police on Super Highway in Sohrab Goth within the limits of the Sacchal police. The encounter occurred early on Tuesday.
Police officials claimed that the encounter took place when the police raided the criminals’ hideout on a tipoff. The suspects were armed and were looting passers-by. According to police officials, the criminals resorted to indiscriminate fire at the police and tried to escape. In the retaliatory fire, four of the suspects were killed. Police officials claim to have recovered weapons from their possession.
Sacchal DSP Qamar Ahmed said that the police were trying to trace their identities and criminal records. Initial investigation suggested that they were involved in various cases of highway robberies and crimes. The bodies were later shifted to Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for identification after medico-legal formalities at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Similarly, two alleged target killers were killed during an encounter with the police in Manghopir. Police officials claimed that the encounter took place on Northern Bypass, adding that both the criminals were killed during the gun-battle. The bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsies where they were identified as Waseem alias Babar alias Khan, 32, and Hassan alias Shahrukh, 26.
Two pistols and a motorcycle were recovered from their possession. Police officials said that the deceased criminals were wanted by the police in several cases of target killings and crimes. Further investigations are underway.
Busted
Separately, two suspected members of a Lyari-based gang were arrested after an exchange of fire with the police in Mochko.
The arrested men were later identified as Zeeshan alias Mushki and Din Muhammad. Police officials said that the suspects were associated with the Baba Ladla group. Weapons were also seized from them.
Similarly, three alleged robbers were arrested during a shootout with the police in Sohrab Goth. They were identified as Nawab Wazir, Ehsan Hafiz and Rasheed Mushtaq. Police officials said that the suspects were involved in various cases of crime.
Meanwhile, three suspected target killers were arrested by District Central investigation wing. The suspects were identified as Ameer Hamza alias Hamza, Abdul Habib alias Sonu and Azeem. Weapons were also recovered from their possession.

KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers, Sindh on Tuesday claimed to have arrested nine suspects belonging to a political party allegedly involved in targeted killings and extortion.
“Rangers conducted a targeted raid in the Akal Bonga area [in old city area] today and detained nine hardened criminals, including target killers and extortionists
affiliated with the MQM,” said a Rangers official statement.
It added that weapons, including grenades, bulletproof jacket and a large quantity of ammunition were also seized, the statement claimed.
