The Mine Sweeper Tender “Bungo” and the Mine Sweeper Ocean “Yaeyama” will participate in the exercise from the Japanese side. Approximately 220 personnel are on board these vessels. The vessels have been anchored at Jebel Ali Port since Thursday.

The joint exercise will be conducted in line with the common vision of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. After their meeting in Tokyo in February this year, they announced the joint statement entitled “The concrete efforts for strengthening the comprehensive partnership between Japan and UAE — Towards stability and prosperity”. The Japanese minesweepers will also participate in the third International Mine Countermeasures Exercise (IMCMEX) in the waters around Arabian Peninsula from October 27 to November 13.

How does Japan view the GCC politically and in terms of cooperation with that part of the world knowing that China is our biggest trading partner? Japan also being an ally of the West for now probably has no conflicting interests when it comes to GCC relations with the West.

I am of the opinion that GCC, not being part of the Chinese-Japanese rivalry, should be able to have close/cordial ties with both countries.

Ties with China are already close and it seems to me that the ties with Japan are getting there too. I read some articles about Japan wanting to have closer ties with the GCC and remaining Arab world and vice versa. On several fields.

Do you have any information showing the trade balance between the GCC and Japan? Too lazy right now to google this.:)

Personally I was really surprised by the close economic cooperation between KSA and South Korea and the big trade balance between those two countries when I recently read an article about that relation.

With its rapidly growing economy, Asia is becoming increasingly powerful in the world economy. Japan, plays an important role as a “bridge nation” connecting Asia and the world.

Japan, as we all know, is a huge market with one of the world’s largest economies. In addition, sectors with large growth potential exist in Japan, including health and tourism markets. Therefore it’s not surprising that trade between Japan and the GCC countries has only grown from strength to strength.

The value of two-way trade between Japan and the GCC countries grew 12.3% in 2012 to USD $182.13 billion, compared to USD 162.23billion in 2011.

Yes, Japan is a highly developed nation with a very diversified economy, strong indigenous industries, a strong scientific sector and the world's third biggest economy. Japan's transition in the past 150 years has been remarkable coming from a rather obscure/isolated position due to geography and other factors. It's really a unique success story with no precedents IMO.

I think that Japan's expertise on many fronts will come handy for the GCC and other partners of Japan.

That's a HUGE trade volume. I wonder what it will be in 2014? Probably even bigger!

Even with the rivalry between Japan and China, that has not really hampered the enormous trade between our two countries, which exceeds over $320 Billion per annum. And we have partners with many of China's closest friends and partners, too. For example, Japan has close trading relationship with Russia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka; all of which are very friendly to China. The Government does not have an interventionist policy and so we do well to separate business with politics. Besides, we are seeing a trend to develop more amicable / working ties and relationship with China.

But in regards to KSA and other relevent states in GCC, we're expanding our relationships for not only economic interests, but also for protection of the trade routes that links both of our civilizations together. :)

The volume of trade between GCC and Japan is greater by $30 billion than the trade Japan has with the European Union. That shows you how much trade there is between our civilizations. And it will grow even further. Inshallah.

You can bet that Japan will play an active role in the defense of GCC, especially Saudi Arabia, in the event that certain nations would threaten her. We will not risk our major energy supplier and greatest Ally in the Middle East ever be threatened. Period.

Yes, despite historical events and rather silly rivalries on forums etc. and some irresponsible comments from people in power Japan and China have very close economic ties. It shows that even political rivals or bitter historical enemies (at least not long ago) can separate history and politics from economy. I hope that this can one day happen in the ME too.

Japan is such an important economy/country that most countries want relations with it as it can benefit them too. Business and coexistence is the way forward. As Arabs we understand this perfectly as we have been one of the longest major international traders out there trading with all corners of the world almost outside of the "New World" for millenniums.

Although I have to say that I would dread a conflict in Eastern Asia. Having a state like North Korea around you can't be helpful. The growing American interest in that part of the world (to counter China mainly) can also lead to unfortunate events. Let's hope that it all ends calmly and that diplomacy will triumph.

That's some kind words and I was not even aware of such extremely close economic ties. I hope that this can also extend to other fields such as science, agriculture, tourism etc. KSA and other GCC states are now undergoing growing industrialization each year and Japan having somewhat recent experiences with that is a great model country to follow and learn from.;)

I do not think that KSA will be involved in any serious wars. Since KSA was created in the 1930's (obviously civilizations on the Arabian Peninsula and nearby areas and Arabia itself as an entity is one of the oldest civilizations on the planet and longest inhabited areas of the world) there has not really been any major wars. This would also be catastrophic on many fronts and would create huge unrest in the ME, Arab world and Muslim world as a whole. US considers the Arabian Peninsula a key area of interest hence the number of bases there. In terms of politics, economics, natural resources, religion (Islam), geopolitics etc. it is a crucial area and the world powers want to see that area peaceful.:) It's in the interest of both the US/West and China/East Asia.

Similarily with Eastern Asia.

This is why I am hopeful that there will not be any major wars involving KSA and nearby neighbors. For all the KSA/GCC/Arab world vs Iran talk about rivalry there has not been any direct war for 1400 years excluding the Iraq-Iran war. Moreover it is mostly a covert "war" and rivalry. Anyway with all due respect to Iran then they are not a match for the Arab world on any front (nor will they ever be) nor will the Arab world ever be involved (as a whole) with a war against Iran. KSA alone can stand its ground against Iran without problems let alone the entire Arab world.

Having said that then growing economic ties with a neighbor would be a good thing if it benefited us all but I believe that the Iranian regime must change before this can take place.

Anway let's not turn the thread into these kind of topics as it is about UAE/GCC - Japan relations.;)

@Nihonjin1051 stop cooperating with Arabs; I don't trust @al-Hasani and haven't trusted him since he promised to introduce me to a beautiful and delicate lady friends of his whom he thought I'd like. This is her: :o:

Thanks for ruining my evening. Right before the Man Utd - Chelsea game. Or worse you have made me asexual for a while. I will never forgive you for this crime.
