Japan wants to recruit caregivers and nurses from Bangladesh, said an official of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET).
Bangladesh embassy in Japan sent letters to the expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment ministry and BMET informing them of the opportunities created for Bangladeshis in Japan’s job market, the official said.
Japan reportedly has the highest life expectancy in the world, with a baby girl expected to live up to 86 years of age and a boy up to nearly 80, according to a 2011 study. Its level of expectancy has risen in recent times thanks to general diet awareness and public health measures.
In this regard, the official said more old people in Japan are in need of paid caregivers than before, with the average age of the Japanese rising. Bangladesh can take this opportunity and send trained helpers there.
Currently, Japan recruits caregivers and nurses from Philippines and Indonesia under the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
BMET Director Nurul Islam said there is a good potential for Bangladeshis in Japan’s booming caregiving industry.
“We sent a letter to our embassy in Japan two weeks ago in this regard. We requested our officials to hold meetings with the respective departments of Japan and inform us about what steps we should take to send caregivers,” he told the Dhaka Tribune over phone on Thursday.
Those who are interested to work as caregivers have to have training and fluency in Japanese. If Bangladeshis perform better, opportunities will likely increase, he said.
A caregiver would get a monthly salary of over Tk100,000, he added.
