GREGORY CLARK

In yet another of his denunciations of alleged Chinese territorial greed, Brahma Chellaney, in his July 26 article, “China’s salami-slice strategy, “includes Chinese incursions across the claimed Line of Actual Control in the Ladakh portion of the Sino-Indian frontier.

Rahul Singh, writing in the Hindustan Times of July 30, quotes a top Indian military source noting that Indian incursions across the Ladakh LAC have been far more frequent than Chinese. The much-publicized recent Chinese incursion in that area was clearly in response to an Indian outpost being established alongside China’s sensitive Tibet-Sinkiang highway well to the north of the LAC.

I would also point out that China’s current acceptance of the Sino-Indian LAC, in Ladakh and elsewhere (Assam mainly), is already a major concession to India, considering its dubious legality as the result of a 19th-century British imperialistic land grab and subsequent arbitrary Indian expansions.

Chellaney also slams China’s moves in the South China Sea, toward the Spratley and Paracel island groups especially. He, like so many others, seems unaware of the fact that Japan, in its 1952 peace treaty with the Republic of China, gave up its sovereignty not just to Taiwan but also to these two island groups, with the ROC as the presumed recipient of all.

Gregory Clark is professor of economics at the University of California, Davis, and author of the forthcoming book A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World (Princeton University Press, 2007). Clark’s research interests include world economic history, the economic history of India, economic growth since the Middle Ages, the Agricultural Revolution, and industrialization in underdeveloped economies. In addition to serving at U.C. Davis, Clark has helds posts in economics at Stanford University, the University of Michigan, and Brown University. Originally from Scotland, Clark is a graduate of Cambridge and Harvard Universities.

After Sino-India war, there's a border negotiation between China and India.

At the time, Chiang Kai-Shek, the president of Republic of China (established 1912) called Mao Zedong the idiot. Chiang Kai-Shek said at the telephone:

Are you insane giving Chinese territory to the junior country of India (established 1947)???

Said the leader of a country that couldn't even move out of a tiny island.

Oh BTW, do use your mind on why he was trying to instigate Mao.

If Mao had held supply lines through Arunachal then, his newly won revolutionary army would have been pushed to the brink by the terrible terrain here then. Chiang just wanted the PLA to bleed enough for them to fall weak and withdraw and while PLA retreated, Nationalists would have attempted to take over.

Opportunity, opportunity.

If you think Mao was being noble by 'giving away', he saved his own regime from collapsing as a result of prolonged stay in AP.

Giving away? Shek won't have lasted even half the battle with that tiny Taiwanese military without US backing.

Japanese sacrificed themselves to defend Manchuria when Russians invaded it to annex it with Russia.

500,000 Japanese fought against 1,000,000 Russians and defended Manchuria. Does the CCP tell this to the Chinese today?

So sayeth Fizzzzzy!!

Hi Fizzzzzy, when did you turn into a Malaysian? :azn: Identity Crisis?

Now on-topic: this border to and fro will continue on the LAC. It si all part of the pressure and counter-pressure between the two countries. And if you see it in the context of the larger International Posturing that is going on; it will make sense.

Indian Cheerleaders get sexcited whenever there is an anti-China article released ! LOL

The article clearly mentions India, too much for you to think about logic before posting right?

Really ? Then why India often label her citizens who have committed crime as "Muslim" ?

INDIA: MUSLIM terrorists bomb one of the holiest shrines in Buddhism

Aren't Indian Muslims INDIAN ? Why label them with a tag "Muslim" ?

The website you have quoted is work of some religious fanatic. Please provide an authentic source which discrminates against Muslims, Muslims of India are living a better life than Hindus of pakistan.

Brother, I may need to correct you. He was a President of the Republic of China which was not a tiny island.
