New Delhi, Jan.18 (ANI): Japan is ready to invest in building roads and infrastructure in India's landlocked northeast, excluding the state of Arunachal Pradesh, said Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida here over the weekend.

China is in dispute with India over the state of Arunachal Pradesh, calling it south Tibet, especially Tawang, a key site for Tibetan Buddhism. The historic town briefly fell into Chinese hands during the 1962 war before Beijing retreated. However, New Delhi regards it an integral part of India.

"Japan is prepared to provide for robust contribution and cooperation in order to enhance such connectivity and that is why yesterday, when I made a courtesy call to his Excellency Prime Minister Modi, I had pointed out exactly that point and we agreed on the importance of such co-operation," said Kishida at a business seminar.

Building infrastructure such as power plants, industries and telecommunication hubs in the northeast would be a major contributor to connect the key region with Southeast Asian countries.

"You specifically pointed out the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India, which is a territory of India, which is pending in terms of its dispute with China and for the moment, to my understanding, there are no plans currently for Japan to provide aid to this state," added Kishida.

Japan has promised to give India 35 billion dollars for developmental projects.

Kishida arrived in New Delhi on Friday to co-chair the eighth India-Japan Strategic Dialogue with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj. The two foreign ministers will review all aspects of the bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

"As a result, no longer the East China Sea, the South China Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean separate and distinct. Rather an event in one would impact the situation in other seas and we are seeing development of such phenomena," added Kishida. (ANI)

Govt tunes into northeast, J&K with 33 new FM channels

NEW DELHI: Keen to extend the reach and impact of radio in border areas, the government has approved 18 new FM radio channels for the eight north-eastern states and 15 new FM channels for Jammu & Kashmir.

Announcing this on Saturday, Union minister of state for personnel and MoS (independent charge), DoNER Jitendra Singh hailed the approval of additional FM radio channels in the border states of Jammu & Kashmir and northeast as the Centre's "New Year gift" to them.

Out of the 15 new FM channels to be launched in Jammu & Kashmir, three each will be in Kathua and Bhaderwah. Of the remaining nine channels, three each will be in Kargil, Leh and Poonch.

In the northeast, three channels each will be launched in the six towns of Haflong and Dhubri in Assam, Jowai in Meghalaya, Lung-lei in Mizoram, Mokukchung in Nagaland and Belonia in Tripura. This is in addition to the existing 12 FM channels already functional in the region.

Singh said the new channels were being launched with the special objective of extending the reach and impact of radio to the border areas, where other means of telecast or broadcast are not available. "Radio is still the most easily available and convenient medium of broadcast even in such peripheral areas where television telecast is not accessible and the added advantage is that radio broadcast can be tuned even without electricity," he observed.

In a special measure for border areas, the government has drastically relaxed the cut-off population required for introducing an FM channel. While in Phase-II FM radio auction, the cut-off population was 3 lakh, in Phase-III it is proposed to be 1 lakh. In case of the 33 channels to be launched in J&K and northeastern states, however, the population cut-off could be further reduced.

Singh said that as a minister for DoNER and an MP from Jammu & Kashmir, he had urged upon the concerned ministries to install these proposed channels with a higher frequency compared to the existing channels, so that they can better broadcast services in the border areas.

The Union Cabinet had on Friday given the go-ahead for the third phase of the auction of FM radio channels, expected to earn the government around Rs 550 crore in revenue if all the channels are sold.

The auction will add an additional 839 channels across 294 cities. The Cabinet also approved the migration (renewal) of private FM radio licences from Phase II to Phase III in 69 existing cities for 135 channels.

Good to hear that India is pressing forward for the plans to develop its Northeastern states. And am glad to see that Japan is contributing a helping hand for our friends !

You are most welcome here. :)

Although I really hope that Japan sheds its inhibitions of considering our state as 'disputed' and extends hands to develop infrastructure in Arunachal as well. Remember, they are as Indian as we Sikkimese or any Delhi or Mumbai resident is.

In the coming years, we will change our policy to officially recognize Senkaku as Japanese. Just wait and watch.
