F-35 & F-18 Super Hornet II

Japan Self Defense Air Force future replacement of F-4J fighters (F-X) is becoming a head-to-head competition between the two American aerospace giants, Boeing and Lockheed martin, offering the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and an advanced variant F/A-18 Super Hornet. Tokyo is expected to make a decision next month. Besides the two fighters’ operational capabilities Japan is likely to give high marks for involvement of domestic companies.

According to Mike Denton, President, Boeing Japan, Boeing has committed to transfer between 70 to 80 percent of the Super Hornet’s production to Japan, including some advanced stealth and agile antennae technologies if its offer is selected. On the other side, Lockheed Martin is also offering Tokyo substantial domestic work share, including license production of the Pratt & Whitney F-135 engine.

Japanese industry has lobbied the government to insist on maximizing localized manufacturing of component, final assembly, maintenance and support. As in past procurement, the selected plane will be built in Japan and procured trough a major local contractor. Previous acquisitions of F-4J, and F-15J were provided by Boeing, while the more recent F-2 is a derivative of the Lockheed Martin F-16 all three were produced in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Tokyo originally considered buying the F-22 but given the U.S. administration’s restriction limiting the export of this type Tokyo embarked in May 2011 on the less ambitious $4 billion worth F-X program buying 40-60 planes, for which Tokyo was evaluating the export available F-35 Lightning II, a stealthy Super Hornet and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Why is Japan even considering F-18 Super Hornet it is not a stealth planes than why F-18

Select F35 and continue F-2 production if you want 4th gen plane. i think in 10 years time F18 would be no match to J20 or PAkFA. So why waste money on another plateform, why not continue the home made fighter production.

Okay so they are making stealth version of their 4 Generation planes to first they made F-15 Silent Eagle which is also very much stealth and now Stealth version of F-18

But according to reports this will be a stealth version of F-18 than Japan can go for it but China is also working on many kind of stealth planes

F-35 and F/A-18 : None of which would stand a chance against J-20s and Sukhoi Su-30 of Chinese air force. US should release a downgraded variant of the Raptor to Japs.

Well, the 'stealthy' F-18 isn't exactly a 5th generation stealth fighter. The F-35 is however.

Although, it seems that Boeing is giving the Japanese very favorable options. 70-80 percent production is a lot.

Even if there is an inevitable military engagement with China at some point, the US will undoubtedly interefere. Also, Japan is a pacifist state.

Although chances of F/A 18 winning this quite slim.

Japan would want to operate F-35's from its Helicopter carriers.

Sir USA will never Interfere if China starts war with Japan maximum they will do is provide weapons as fast as they could but they will never use their Air Force or Navy or Army

It was obvious an American fighter will walk away with the deal

Don't forget that some of the newer Super Hornet variants allows for later modification/upgrade to the EA-18 Growler, which provides as a good compliment to squadrons.

I thought Japan was super advanced? Why not just create your own fighter jets?
