Japan is looking to collaborate with South Africa on defence as part of Tokyo's continuing effort to expand its global influence, the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) has told IHS Jane's .

Discussions between senior defence officials from both countries took place in Pretoria in early August and covered potential co-operation in military procurement and military research and development, said official reports.

Japan also supplied the South African National Defence Force's Peace Mission Training Centre with several vehicles with which to undertake related missions.

A Japanese MoD spokesman said that the move to expand collaboration was linked to Tokyo's dispatch of a defence attaché to Japan's South African embassy in July.
