Japan imposes sanctions against Russia under US pressure — Tokyo Governor

@Nihonjin1051 , if Japan were to revise the Article 9, would the US-Japan Mutual Defense Treaty not become obsolete?

The MDT between Japan and the US is not included in the constitution , so the only way for us to abrogate the MDT would be if the Japanese Parliament were to repeal it.

I have been saying this truth very long. Japan fear of US abandonment is the very reason they follow the US order. If Japan betrays the US, there will be consequence for Japan to pay and this consequence will be huge. Almost all Japan industrial power and military security depend on the US. The US can easily install backdoor in their defense industry to shut them down if they betray the US.

Hello my friend Xunzi, why so doom and gloom ? LOL

Instead of perpetually being on the defensive maybe you should cite examples of Germany and how they interact with ALL their immediate neighbors since it is a similar situation. Is the US, France,Spain, England, and Russia (and everybody else) obsessed with Germany wanting to "get even" since they considered themselves the "master race".

According to their logic they should all be worried about German tanks rolling across their borders any day.

The facts are that things have quieted down in Europe since WW2 and hundreds of years of being at each others throats has finally ceased. I don't know how much (if any) credit the US can take for that but whatever policies we may strong-armed on them seemed to have worked.

@Peter C ,

I find it almost insulting (tho I am not even German) how many in the European Union have this innate fear of a militarized Germany, yet at the same time, are quick to beg Germany for financial assistance anytime something happens. Germany and the German economic machine has effectively become the EU's money bin/ piggy bank.

Which is it...a fear of US abandonment...or a sinister military buildup to exact revenge on US/China/Martians?

Sometime it hurts to hear the truth but it is what it is. Your country depends on the US for security is deeply ingrained in the whole industry. It is almost impossible to get rid of the US unless you start from scratch which everyone knows is impossible. You would have to spend at least $1 trillion dollar to build up an independent defense industry. This is not mentioning the cost you have to spend to keep up with the big boy military race. Your 1% of defense GDP is not going to cut it nor it is enough to even talk about an independent defense industry. So I think the talk of an independent Japan is fruitless. What's more important is how to cope with the reality which is Japan is under the US's leadership and how Japan can utilize this relationship to their advantage.

First of all, Japan needs to stop that delusional dream of revenge against USA or invade China again. Let be serious here, both of us are nuclear power. If we piss, we can nuke Japan into extinction. So this talk of revenge is just a far dream. As far as Japan military buildup, we are not that concern because they can't compete with us in a military race. However their buildup will cause instability that might lead to war and as you know, war with Japan might lead to war with you in which we try to avoid that MAD. Get it, my American friend?

LOL. Who said Japanese want revenge on America and China? No one in Japan thinks this way -- Zilch!

The only time I've heard of such accusations is by some of the Chinese posters here in PDF.

To be honest, I can't help but giggle when I read these accusations / conspiracy theories.

I honestly think the countries of Europe are passed the military fear of each other. They see it as a waste of time.
Besides they know any country that tries anything is going to get sanctioned so badly that they will be immobilized.

Japanese Government looks after its own good, enacts policies that helps Japan the most, as well as honoring our alliance system. If you know anything about Japanese corporate culture (that is if you ever have the privilege of working in a Japanese owned company), there is emphasis in the word of the strategic management team. Once a promise or oath is made, it is honored. We Japanese honor our alliance system -- and because we are dependable people, some one you can count on through thick or thin -- we stick around for our American friends. Besides, it also beneficial to have US military presence in the region. It keeps China, NK, Russia in check. Its less defense expenditure on our part.

This is one thing I truly admire about the West. Its a collective front. A las, Asia is a much more interesting chess game.

You keep on thinking that Japan wants to war with America , this is absurd, my friend.

We also have no designs to invade China. No one in Japan thinks this way.

Cut the bullshit, my Nihon friend. You can fool our naive American friend but not us, your big brother! LOL Honor an alliance? Did you forget the British was your major ally in WWI, then you jump ship to Germany in WWII, US in post-WWII, and who is to say you won't jump ship again? Let be honest here. You go after your interest and we go after our interest. The difference is we go after our interest with an independent mindset while your is dependable mindset. It is very easy for us to lie down to the US and in turn they will treat us as a subordinate but we will never commit to that because we are a big power in our own rights and actually have the capability to be an independent power.

They just put the military expenditure to the welfare departments. See the Libyen war. France is once out of ammunition!

Libyen is not a big country. Who will believe there will be war against Russia for Ukarine? For sure, you Americans have to stay in EU, go back to Asia is impossible.

LOL. So much hostility in this post, @xunzi . What I said in my last post is genuine truth. The problem with you is that you're viewing things through historical lens. You're judging us through policies enacted over a century ago, and during the time when Japan was an Imperial Power. There is a huge dichotomy between Japanese foreign policy a century ago to the present. We are not an Imperial power anymore, we are a Liberal Democracy. We love peace and development. :)

To reiterate, it benefits Japan to maintain the Japanese - American Mutual Defense Treaty and Alliance system. So long as it serves our interests, we will maintain it. Fortunately for us (and the Americans), we don't see a change in the status quo to occur in the medium to long term future.

PS. Why do you think that Japan will become 'Imperial' ? Do you seriously think we are a warlike machine that wants to invade people , nations ?
