CAIRO – 7 June 2020: Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Sunday has hailed the Cairo declaration on the Libyan crisis, which pushes for a ceasefire in the war-torn country, saying it is consistent with the relevant international efforts, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.

The planned ceasefire, suggested by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi along with the Libyan parliament speaker and commander of the Libyan National Army, is set to start on Monday, June 8. The declaration also includes a call for the removal of foreign mercenaries from Libya and further political recommendations.

Conte on Sunday made a phone call with President Sisi. They both agreed on the need to intensify coordination on the Libyan issue, in order to end the crisis and reach a political solution that would pave the way for restoring security and stability in Libya, Presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said.

They also urged supporting the international efforts in this regard, implementing the outcome of the Berlin conference on Libya and rejecting foreign interference in the territory.

President Sisi affirmed Egypt’s unchangeable strategic stance toward the Libyan crisis, represented in restoring the national state institutions, ending the spread of the criminal groups and terrorist organizations, prioritizing stability and security of the Libyan people and putting an end to the illegitimate foreign intervention.

During the call, Sisi and Conte also reviewed the bilateral relations between the two countries, especially on the commercial, military and energy levels. Conte expressed Italy’s keenness to develop cooperation with Egypt in all fields.

Sisi, in this regard, expressed willingness to foster special relations between Egypt and Italy in all realms, including efforts to contain the novel coronavirus.

Sisi announced the Cairo declaration after a tripartite meeting with Haftar and Saleh on Saturday.

Sisi said that the political initiative would pave the way for a return to normal life in Libya. Sisi warned against using military tactics to resolve the crisis.

A political solution is the only way to resolve the crisis in Libya, Sisi said, adding that Libya's security is a pillar for Egypt's security.

All Libyan parties have been asked to partake in the ceasefire, al-Sisi said, adding that LNA Chief Haftar and the eastern parliament head Aguila Saleh are committed to protecting the Libyan people’s best interests.

Under the guidelines of the ceasefire, all foreign fighters must withdraw from Libya, he added.

No doubt Egypt's recent massive military hardware deal with Italy including FREMM frigates change Italy's side from Turkey to Egypt.

Yes, Italy may even switch from backing the radicals in Tripoli with being impartial.

Italy used to back Tripoli government. An Italian air force Reaper drone was shot down.

Sadly Italy supported the Tripoli radicals after the drone was shot down (by???):

Unless there were more incidents. I can't find any.

The present government is continuing the policy of previous Italian regime that supported Tripoli. So I doubt Rome would be courageous enough to support Tobruk. Any changes would be gradual and a movement to impartiality, if Sisi could draw off support from the Tripoli warlords.

Italy was using Reaper drone to locate LNA targets for GNA. That's why LNA shot it down. Egypt buys FREMM frigates from Italy. So Italy does not support GNA anymore. Because money talks.

Don't trust any south european country. they all have ambitions towards north africa and I hope Egypt along with all north african countries stand against them, it's time to re-unite especially against italians and french.

And Haftar is the moderate democrat. Why not.

Will never happen. As you can see, Egypt turns his face against his allies in faith and brotherhood. Egypt is not independent and get his order from foreign states.

Italians are hard-headed, takes a while for the ship to turn.

No, they are just opportunists.

The Tobruk government was UN/UNSMIL recognized, Arab League recognized, OIC recognized.

Then the West switched to support of HTS/ISIS/Al Qaeda radicals in Tripoli. The same terrorists in Idlib are the same ideology of the terrorists in Tripoli. And again the West supports the new Mujahedin.

Haftar is comparable to the USA's George Washington. The general leading the continental congress. I hate George Washington, that the best comparison to Haftar though.

Are you sad you don't have any oil to buy from ISIS terrorists.

Better to have Arab friends than to have the entire Eastern Mediterranean be turkified.

Maybe you turks can claim off shore oil/gas in the North Sea to piss off Germany/Norway/UK and leave us Greeks, Cypriots and Italians alone with our own EEZ.

The Egyptian anti-democracy coup was bad a decade ago, turned out to be good now. The military coup in Turkey was bad then, turned out to be good now. The attack on the Lira was bad then, turned out to be good now. Erdogan will get everybody hating Turkey where there was respect before. :enjoy:

Not only were they recognized by the United Nations Security Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the Arab League representatives and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

They received their endorsement.

The Tobruk Government has not changed. Tobruk is still the legitimate government of Libya.
