An Istanbul university will host the second edition of the "International Conference on the Muslim Ummah" between Oct. 14 and 16 that will bring together 20 international scholars.

The conference, to be organized by Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University (IZU) at its Center for Islam and Global Affairs (CIGA), aims to discuss problems across the Muslim world.

The theme of the conference is "Fault lines and Perils Facing Muslim Societies: The Challenges of Sectarianism, Secularism, Nationalism, and Colonialism."

"These are some of the problems that exist in the Muslim societies that cause tension and upheaval, and we are trying to analyze and understand them and offer solutions," Sami Al-Arian, the director of CIGA, told Anadolu Agency.

Al-Arian, who also teaches courses on politics and Islamic civilization at the university, said nationalism in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India, as well as nationalism within the context of the Arab world, will be discussed during the conference.

He said the conference will also discuss as to how colonialism affected the Middle East, and "settler colonialism in Israel/Palestine."

It's a great thing. Our society has been successfully destroyed. I'm shocked at how many consider ummah a dirty word now. Before we can have an unity we must have education and an understanding of identity first.

False dawns like those promised by groups like HT or these radical islamist types are of no use to us. Ummah was only attractive as an idea because the people believed in Allah and Islam as a way of life, and could see Ummah as a useful addition to their lives.

Today Islam is followed as a ritual not as a deen and ummah has no worldly benefits in real terms. It's only a nice idea.

If we want it to work for us again, we need to change how we understand it and how we think we should implement that understanding. The colonialists have worked for hundreds of years to divide us and the work started by destroying our educational institutes. The ummah will not be re-established whilst we take knowledge from them alone.

I don't want to derail this thread, but I find it hilarious that the USA is bullying Pakistan (do more), Turkey (pastor Branson), Iran (nuclear deal) and KSA (dead journalist, military funding, terror support) all seperately.

If these 4 nations as independent states worked together for security, economic and political purposes (like EU model, free trade, joint defence pact), they could not be threatened. However the ego of the ruling class, the lack of trust within these nations, and the higher priority given to material things rather than survival and independence - mean that all 4 will continue to be kicked like dogs.

This is why we need conferences on the idea of ummah, to see if it is still relevant, and if so, how so. The idea of ummah can still appeal, but until the physical benefits and legal structures of it are defined, it's just a pipe dream. 90% of the people talking about it confuse it with empire. They don't know the difference.

. .
Will this replace OIC?
No, it's just a conference, hosted by a university with some scholars.

OIC will not be replaced even in a 100 years, or 200 years. Muslims of the world we know, and their political leaders are very much nationalists.

States like KSA, UAE, sissy's Egypt, assad's Syria and Iran as they are right now have nothing positive to contribute to the idea of ummah. They form a burden too heavy for the ummah. The ummah will rise only after these artificial and despotic states cease to exist.
