India's space agency certainly seems to be on a trajectory to amaze. After stealing the headlines worldwide this week for launching 104 satellites with a single rocket, the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO has successful tested the country's largest cryogenic engine for a full 10 minutes. The engine will power its mammoth Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mark III rocket capable of propelling a 4-ton class satellites into geo-synchronous orbit - the altitude where satellites revolve in sync with the Earth's rotation.

ISRO's cryogenic engine for the GSLV creates a lot more thrust than the solid fuel-pwered PSLV.


With this final hurdle crossed yesterday at an ISRO facility in Tamil Nadu's Mahendragiri, India is all set to test the GSLV Mark III rocket which is almost 50 meters high and weighs 414 tons - equal to 75 Asian elephants. The rocket will be a successor to the GSLV Mark II which was first launched in 2001 and can carry a heavier payload than the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle or PSLV.

This engine has been developed after two decades of hard work as the technology was denied to India by Russia under pressure from the US.

The engine takes in fuel at extremely cold temperatures and then burns it at several hundred degrees.

The rocket engine uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as fuel that are stored at minus 253 degrees centigrade and then ignited to burn at plus hundreds of degrees centigrade just a few centimetres down engine. A very complex technology, the cryogenic engine has been mastered only by Russia, USA, France, China, Japan and India.

India's space programme received international acclaim after ISRO scientists pulled off an ambitious mission three years ago to send a probe to orbit Mars that succeeded at the first attempt - and at $74 million cost less than the Hollywood space film Gravity
 
The cost/Kg of launch is ~ USD 10K which is pretty high as compared to Falcon Heavy by SpaceX !

GSLV-MK3 is scheduled to launch in March or April this year, and ISRO just tested its cryogenic engine? How confident are you that ISRO will keep its words this time around? By Chinese standard, it should have been tested years ago. I hope it is the final of series tests of this engine.
 
It is still way to close to the deadline, if ISRO is serious about launching it on schedule.

It's just in time supply philosophy ;) ISRO has had razor thin time margins before too (several payloads for the mars mission come to mind, as do early days of PSLV tech)...its the way they operate and are scaling up. They can afford to do so given their budgets and human resources are well managed...and no human life is at risk (if something goes wrong).

Its nowhere quite as crazy as what Soviets for example did in many of their technological developments in space and nuclear industry especially....where human lives did come into picture many times (like that crazy positive Cf graphite moderator design in chernobyl) just to step on the accelerator, no matter the margins present.

Haha, "just in time" philosophy doesn't really fit India work cultural very well, remember the famous phase of "India Time"? :partay: Though arguably the best among its domestic peers, ISRO doesn't have a very good track record on "on-time" delivery either, with a couple of exceptions, MoM is for one.

GSLV-MK3 has been laden with countless delays, just like many high profile projects in India, and I do hope ISRO can keep this updated schedule this time. :cheers:
 
Payload is a little low for this size !

I think with a new liquid fuel engine in the first stage the payload weight can go higher !

Perfection is a matter of time ...

The Theoretical maximum payload of GSLV Mk III is 6000 kg.

It will expand its payload gradually as the program continues along its path.
