(JTA) — The removal from power of Bashar Assad is an Israeli interest and ultimate goal, Israel’s defense minister said amid claims that troops loyal to the Syrian President were perpetrating a massacre in Aleppo.

Avigdor Liberman made the remarks, which constitute an unusual departure from Israel’s policy of nonalignment in Syria, on Thursday in Eilat, where he was speaking before participants of that city’s Limmud FSU conference on Jewish learning.

“Assad is a butcher who has massacred people,” Liberman said, adding: “The State of Israel has said ‘never again.’” It was a reference to the rejection of genocidal policies following the Holocaust perpetrated by Nazi Germany and its allies against Jews during the Holocaust. “This massacre, occurring in plain view with chemical weapons, is morally unacceptable,” Liberman also said.

But Liberman said that Assad’s removal was an “ultimate goal” for Israel as opposed to an immediate one.

Many thousands of people, including a large number of civilians, have been killed during the fierce fighting in Aleppo between Assad’s forces and rebels who have controlled parts of the city for the past four years.

More than 3,000 people have been taken out of the fighting zone on the first day of the evacuation on Thursday, but the United Nations said that as many as 50,000 are still trapped, the BBC on Friday reported.

The US accused the Syrian government of carrying out “nothing short of a massacre” in the city.

“The only remaining question is whether the Syrian regime, with Russia’s support, is willing to go to Geneva prepared to negotiate constructively, and whether or not they’re willing to stop this slaughter of their own people,” US Secretary of State John Kerry said.

Syria and Russia have repeatedly denied targeting civilians.

Assad on Thursday hailed the “liberation” of Aleppo after more than four years of fighting, saying that history was being made.

Israel would be fine with a regime change in Syria and for a more Western-oriented government to emerge but once that government is mostly Islamist/calls for true independence, it will be fought on all fronts.

I am not a hardcore Islamist or even an Islamist as it is understood today but the above is obvious for anyone who knows the region and international politics. This is even seen within Muslim countries themselves. So let's not pretend otherwise.

The "Islamic" Revolution in 1979 would be a joke compared to if KSA alone would be controlled by Sunni Islamists let alone a widespread movement in the Arab world alone post Arab Spring. It would change international politics fundamentally.

I have come to the conclusion that populistic movements with an Islamist touch and who call for greater independence (most if not all of the Muslim world is living in a post-colonial world order) will emerge in the Muslim world sooner rather than latter despite attempts from everyone (almost) of countering them. It will be interesting to see how this theory will apply in say 10-15 years. In fact I believe that such movements could become many times more successful than the current largely very incompetent lot on almost every front if given the chance and if no outside interference occurred (impossible currently) etc.

I used to downplay this in the past at times but today it would be foolish to ignore it by Arab and Muslim governments and decision-makers. It will only cause troubles.

Also I feel like there will be a renowned interest in streams within Islam that long ago became unfashionable such as Al-Mu'tazilah inspired movements and others. They already exist but their message is ignored/drowns in all the other nonsense going on in the region.

Each "civilization/region" should follow its own traditions in terms of governance etc. but the problem with 90% of the Muslim world is that they are following imposed systems that most of their populations cannot identity with. In KSA for instance this is reverse but on the other hand the KSA-model is on many fronts outdated today due to how the world looks like. So a middle ground must be found.

Muslim intellectuals should shape the order in the Arab world but not only Muslim intellectuals to challenge/change status quo. In particular Muslim intellectuals due to obvious reasons. The question, once in power, as usual, will be whether such people will have the necessary integrity, visions and abilities to change things for the better or if they will follow the route of the predecessors as we all know that power corrupts. A solution should be found and not by necessary copying a Western-style democratic system.

What has been tried in the modern-era are dictatorships only and pseudo-democracies/secular regimes.

Assad is responsible for the unrest? Right....so who is supporting, arming and facilitating "moderate" head choppers which apparently now include Al-Qaida?

Sorry but there are no moderates in Syria, there are dozens of hard line Jihadist groups that have connections to Al-Quida and ISIS. If Assad would have stepped down years ago the situation would be the same today. You have, Nusra, ISIS, Army of Conquest, Turkeystan Islamic Party, Al-Zenki, and dozens of other idiots including the FSA fighting alongside eachother and against eachother, depending on the day for territory, power and a caliphate.
