Israel is 'mightier' as first F-35 fighter jets arrive

the VTOL f-35 will be handed to US marine corps
May be VTOL can only be afford by US. Just like SU30 TVC only in Russian fleet , no other country has TVC in there SU30 ...TVC engines are expensive to maintained.

i'm not sure , or maybe the marines want to use them in afghanistan without a proper runway.

Just like Indian VTOL fall like birds, because extremely hard to maintained.

But what the youtube videos tell you is that the VTOL f-35 drew an inspiration from an experimental mig-23 which was modified to be VTOL rather than su30 or the harrier.

Russian were far ahead in aviation but they wasted lots of there talent and experimental equipment due to shortage of funds....Mig23PD was awsome program.

yes , so was the su-47 berkut

i never knew

That one I love. But why EU never built VTOL ? EU really need VTOL. UK is building huge fleet of male UAV and reducing investment toward manned vehicle.
Lol we have been building VTOL fighters decades ago. The most famous of which is the sea harriers which we sold many to India and the U.S. actually we might have more VTOL technology/experience than any other country.
F-35B VTOL tech/fan engine is built by Rolls Royce . :)

But not EU product or UK stop further development of its own product.. JSF is NATO product, a joint investment.

Yeah , but it need certain skills and traits ...which can not be developed , its in your gene ..Never heard Arab world produce any good pilots...just for rumor sake, Iraqi and Syria pilots has some good combat mission germs.
One most famous Top Gun in the US was Egyptian.. Saudi pilots proved themselves many time in air combat (Sadly against Iraqis an Iranians).. Pakistani Pilots are considered very good, still they have lost some important battles against India.. Should anyone doubt their skills, traits or ability?

Read USAF team report about Saudi pilots bombing mission in Yeman. Angry USAF team left Suadi basE ,which designate targets for Saudi pilots. Forget combat mission, a pilot can not hit ground target with precision weapons, what else then. Hope that would help you understand my context. Plus many examples where during 71 war, Arab planes outnumbered Isreali plane ( over 1200 vs 200 or 300)...and you can view the result. Anyway, Libyan mirage lift off and stuck down. Libyan Migs lift off and stuck down by USAF. List of failure never ending. Read when Saudi pilot shutdown Iraqi plane during desert storm, how wings escort the prince plane to shutdown enemy (Iraqi plane).(report : CNN).

" Fallon was responding to the written questions asked by Stephen Doughty, Labor MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, on the UK involvement in the Yemen military intervention, when he admitted that “UK has provided training to the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) both in the UK and in Saudi Arabia,” in particular, to “improve their targeting processes” and ensure its better compliance with international law. NEVATIM AIR BASE, Israel (Reuters) - - Israel on Monday became the first country after the United States to receive the U.S.-built F-35 stealth jet which will increase its ability to attack distant targets, including Iran.

The much-hyped arrival of the first two fighter jets was overshadowed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's tweet that Lockheed Martin's whole F-35 project was too expensive, and the delivery was delayed for hours by bad weather preventing their take-off from Italy.

The squadron is expected to be the first operational outside the United States. The planes are the first of 50, costing around $100 million each.

"Our long arm has now become longer and mightier," said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Nevatim air base in the southern Negev desert.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, also attending the ceremony which was delayed until after dark, said the planes were critical to maintaining Israel's military edge in the region.

A U.S. squadron of the planes, which have suffered delays and cost overruns, became operational in August. The F-35 program is the Pentagon's largest weapons project.

"The F-35 program and cost is out of control," Trump said on Twitter, sending Lockheed Martin's shares down 4 percent.

Jeff Babione, Lockheed Martin's F-35 programme leader, said the company understood concerns about affordability and had invested millions of dollars to try to reduce its price.

Israel, which finalised a 10-year, $38 billion arms deal from the United States this year, plans to maintain two F-35 squadrons.

Critics of the plane say it can carry a smaller weapons payload and has a shorter range than Israel's current squadrons of U.S.-built F-15s and F-16s.

But some experts say the F-35's stealth capabilities make up for this because it can be more accurate and fly a more direct route to its target. Israel's air force mostly flies missions close to home, in the Gaza Strip and against arms shipments to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria.

It is also believed to have carried out bombings in Sudan against arms shipments to Palestinian militants, and to have drawn up contingency plans against Iranian nuclear facilities.

Israel initially ordered 33 of the fighters but signed off on another 17 last month.

Nimrod Shefer, a retired Israeli air force major-general, said the new aircraft were a welcome addition.

"(There are) very low- to very high-altitude missiles ... and targets that are becoming more and more difficult to detect and to destroy," he said.
