Wildfires burn in Haifa, Israel, Nov. 24, 2016.

HAIFA, ISRAEL —
A wildfire roared through parts of Israel's third-largest city on Thursday, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes and prompting a rare call-up of hundreds of military reservists to join overstretched police and firefighters.

Spreading quickly due to dry, windy weather, the fire raced through Haifa's northern neighborhoods. While there were no serious injuries, several dozen people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

Police and firefighters were deployed throughout the city, as people loaded up supermarket carts with belongings and fled their homes. Some people connected hoses together from apartment buildings to help battle the fires, while residents held cloth over their faces.

The blaze was the largest of several fires to erupt across the country in recent days. The rash of fires is the worst since 2010, when Israel suffered the single deadliest wildfire in its history. That blaze burned out of control for four days, killed 42 people and was extinguished only after firefighting aircraft arrived from as far away as the United States.

Israel has strengthened its firefighting abilities since then, buying special planes that can drop large quantities of water on affected areas. Several countries, including Russia, Cyprus, Turkey, Croatia and Greece _ were also sending assistance to battle this week's blazes.

Guy Catlan, who runs a gas station in Haifa, told Channel 10 TV that workers turned the power off and were helping firefighters to prevent flames from reaching it. ``There is a very large quantity of fuel here, it is very dangerous to the entire area, it could be a big catastrophe,'' he said.

Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police were investigating all possible causes for the wildfires, including arson. Residents of eight neighborhoods in the northern city of Haifa were told to evacuate their homes on Thursday afternoon, he said. Rosenfeld did not know how many people were affected, but media reports said tens of thousands live in the affected areas.

The military said it deployed two search and rescue battalions in order to assist civilian efforts. It also called up about 500 reserve soldiers to back up the police and fire departments.

Several roads and schools were closed in some areas of Haifa. Mayor Yonah Yahav told Channel 2 TV there were several fires in his city.

Yahav also said there were indications one of the fires was caused when ``someone tossed a cigarette in an area full of oil and flammable fluids'' in an industrial zone.

A spokesman for Israel's fire and rescue service, Yoram Levy, told the station that firefighters were working around the clock. He said the fires in Haifa ``are probably arson,'' and that there was an attempt to torch a fire station.

Police said the blazes started early Tuesday morning at Neve Shalom, a community outside Jerusalem where Israelis and Arabs live together. Fires later erupted elsewhere near Jerusalem and in the northern Israeli area of Zichron Yaakov.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meanwhile spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, thanking him for his help in dealing with the fires. The premier's office said Thursday that Russia is sending two large firefighting aircraft to Israel.

Haifa fires: Tens of thousands of Israelis flee city
Netanyahu threatens those responsible for the fires with "full legal force" as smoke transforms northern city's skyline.

Tens of thousands of Israelis have been fleeing wildfires in the northern city of Haifa, with the prime minister warning that any proof of arson would be treated as "terrorism".

Dry conditions after a two-month drought, in addition to strong winds, have fuelled the fires, which have also spread to other parts of the country.

Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said that anyone who may have started fires deliberately would be punished.

"We are facing arsonist terror. In front of arsonist terror we are also facing incitement and also arson. For us they are the same. And we will bring our full legal force to get those responsible," he said.

"It's a crime in every possible way and for us, it is also terror in every possible way. People can get burned. It has already happened."

Thousands evacuated
The smoke, which has transformed Haifa's skyline, forced authorities to order about 80,000 people to leave the city, where several homes have been destroyed.

Firefighters were working to douse the flames but some homes in the worst-affected areas were already beyond repair.

The main highway between Haifa and Tel Aviv shut down for some time on Thursday, while authorities tried to put out the flames.

Homes have also been damaged in fires affecting parts of the occupied West Bank and in an area close to Jerusalem, where some properties were lost in the blaze.

Israeli authorities arrested four Israeli Palestinians, but a judge released them soon afterwards citing a lack of evidence.

Micky Rosenfeld, an Israeli police spokesman, said: "At the moment we are investigating how the fires began. We strongly believe that the fires could have been started by individuals who fled the scenes.

"There are a number of reports that we've received, and therefore, at the moment we are continuing to both put out the flames, deal with the major situation which is taking place in and around the city of Haifa."

Several nations, including Turkey, have offered assistance, as more strong winds were predicted in the coming days.

Bit of sensationalist paranoid here, maybe. Arabs' dwellings and towns are burning, too. Firefighters from the Palestinian Authority are helping. And Haifa is known for its comparative amity between Arabs and Jews. Weather conditions set the stage for this - accidents can be as damaging as arson.

Doubtless the affected areas will be re-seeded and re-planted. Hopefully with better fire and land management planning. And new dwellings will replace the old. Although fatalities can be counted on one's fingers over 60,000 people are displaced - which in the U.S.A. would be the equivalent of about three million people, or eight Hurricane Katrinas.

[Al-Jaz' map of Israel is weird, dunno what that's about.]

Some yes, some no. It's something of a political hot potato. @500 , @Mountain Jew , you guys want to comment?
Israeli's even blame the arabs for the wild fires:cheesy:
The arabs already admitted, there is videos, there is people who see them.
It was arabs from judea&samaria and israeli arabs as well,Spitting into the well from which they drink, as usual.
The arabs themselvs went out to the forests to guard from arab arsonists.

Israeli government went paranoid in initial stages of the fire, and by their racist nature pinned blame on non-Jews of the Holy Land. Even though it was natural cause/accident in Haifa(where the big fire occurred). Now that the fire is under control, they are toning down that racist and childish behavior, after embarrassing themselves. They will only emphasize it's arson if they need donations from gullible Christians to pay the expenses and give them added benefits on top of it.

Random Palestinians were arrested, they are mostly released or going through pointless interrogation and will be released as well.

That doesn't mean they were telling the truth; they could have been boasting or trying to protect the real perpetrators. There has to be some form of collaborative evidence or eyewitness accounts.
