World War 3 fears as Israel BOMBARDS Iranian targets in Syria in hour-long assault

ISRAEL has gone on the offensive in Syria, triggering fears of a major conflict breaking out in the Middle East.

The country's military said it had struck Iranian targets in Syria, and warned President Assad's forces not to attack Israeli territory or forces.

Witnesses in Syria's capital Damascus said loud explosions shook the night for almost an hour.

Syrian state media quoted a military source as saying Israel had launched an "intense attack through consecutive waves of guided missiles", but said Syrian air defences destroyed most of the "hostile targets".

Dramatic pictures from the scene show huge orange glows in the sky as Syrian air defences intercept the Israeli missiles.

In a statement, Israel's military said: "We have started striking Iranian Quds targets in Syrian territory.

"We warn the Syrian Armed Forces against attempting to harm Israeli forces or territory."

The Quds Force leads Iran's Revolutionary Guards' overseas missions.

These latest strikes come just hours after cross-border attacks, in which Syria said it had fought back an Israeli air strike.

Israel said it intercepted a rocket fired at the Golan Heights, a disputed Israeli territory on the border with Syria.

Earlier, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "We have a permanent policy, to strike at the Iranian entrenchment in Syria and hurt whoever tries to hurt us."

Usually, Israel keeps quiet about its attacks on Iranian targets near its border but has been more open in January.

Experts say this is a sign of the country's increased confidence as it fights a campaign which threatens to involve Syrian President Assad's close ally, Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

The Israeli army said a popular winter sports site on Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights would be shut for the day following Sunday's airstrikes.

Last week, Netanyahu admitted his country had attacked what he called an Iranian arms cache in Syria, where Iran provides Damascus with vital military support.

He told his cabinet Israel had carried out "hundreds" of attacks over the past few years of Syria's brutal civil war.

These he said were to stop the increasing influence in the region of Iran and its ally the Hezbollah regime in Lebanon.

Last week, Daily Star Online reported a US general's warning that Iranian missile launches threaten Europe.
Calm down. Nothing is going to happen. These bombings occur every now and then.

what is the role of russia here? israel shot down russian plane.iran is friend of russia and russia takes dictation from israel and allows israel to kill syrian servicemen and russia is supposed to protect assad army.this is pathetic.

. . . . . .
They call them Iranian targets for propaganda purposes. Netanyahu trying to improve his reputation. Also Israel wants to make sure with US pullout that no one thinks it won't stop attacking. Other part of it is to try making it appear like they are helping arabs by weakening Iran in Syria.

Reality is its same strikes on previous sites and mostly arms depots belonging to Syrian army. There aren't many Iranians there and they aren't being targeted. And it's about 6-10 strikes on 2-3 targets each time.

this thread is such a shitfest.

What's the point of interceptions when you don't retaliate?
The enemy is only encouraged to try again.
I already answered this.

Looool...ok we should see plane wreckage etc then...
Interception of munitions (e.g. Delilah cruise missile), not the jets firing them dumbass.

Yep, no Iranians died or injured. 4 Syrians died (likely when manned Buk/Pantsir systems were attacked).

Nice air defence interceptions, laid waste to their attack. Whats next? Syria and iran should retsiliate to israeli territory now, otherwise there is no point in those interceptions. Israel needs to know if they attack they get attacked back as well. Why are syrians so weak?? They should hit back with an effective offensive. I hope they hit back with in a few days othereise syrians are just pussies.

they tested and showed weapons just to get export orders. Remember the f22 pictures by su 35.

Russian Sukhoi Su-35S has posted a photo that is U.S. Air Force F-22A Raptor that was captured on the Flanker-E’s OLS-35 electro-optical infra-red search and track system.

Syrian army was never prepared to fend off israeli attacks and it is not a wealthy nation. Thats pre civil war, post war the army is overstretched on fronts with Idlib and eastern areas of Syria as well as had many defects. On top of that many of their soldiers were killed in the civil war and much of their equipment destoryed.

Israel has no need to attack Syria. It is doing this to change arab public opinion about Israel. Especially the Gulf Arabs who see Iran as an enemy. So it wants them to have positive views on israel to eventually pave way for these countries to have public relations with israel.

The attacks themselves are not huge, but they last long because Israeli jets are firing from Lebanese air space or Israeli air space. And most of the strikes trying to fool air defense systems or attack them.

Iran itself only has small presence of advisors in Syria and it can't do anything about these strikes. It would cost them too much to try moving assets there to repel israeli attacks. Especially since Syrian air defense isn't sufficient and that Russia will not help them deter Israel. As Russia is only interested in protecting ally and challenging US influence in region.
