An "Islamic Facebook" huh? Any marketing student could inform people that that is a ridiculous marketing attempt. It essentially promotes the image that the product is a clone intended to segregate society on religious grounds. Perhaps it may actually turn out be a clone, similar to how "vkontakte" is a duplicate of Facebook aimed at the former USSR states. In fact "vkontakte" is even worse than Facebook because the last time I checked it out, it lacked many features of Facebook. That may have changed now, but that's beside the point. To top it off the social network's name "Salamworld" sounds dull & uninspiring. Of course the attractiveness of the name is purely subjective, but I highly doubt it would grab the attention of most people. Somehow it kind off reminds me of the time when Android based smartphones were marketed as the poor man's iPhone. That of course was before Android managed to turn in to a true competitor as it's today.
The question is; do most Muslims desire to isolate themselves? Do they really care for an "Islamic Facebook"? Living in a what is mostly a conservative society, I can say with a degree of certainty that most Muslims at least in my country of residence couldn't give a crap about having an Islamic social network. Keep in mind that generation X doesn't care too much about social networking, & generation Y that happens to be fond of technology also tends to use the most popular tools available. Based on my own knowledge, generation Y is the majority of the Muslim world, & they aren't as obsessed about Islam as some individuals may assume. Moving on to privacy, lets face it; no one can truly guarantee a person's safety online. It's the responsibility of the individual to guard himself or herself from perverts. In case a person happens to be a minor, the responsibility of protection rests on the shoulders of the parents, there is only so much the privacy features of a social network can do. In my opinion if a person employs caution & makes efficient & effective usage of Facebook & Google+'s security features, he or she will never have to worry about privacy concerns or being harassed.
People tend to come across un-Islamic content if they search for it. Both Facebook & Google+ have strict rules against nudity & have undertaken immense efforts for the protection of minors. Besides, isn't the social network's job to connect a person to world? Will a social network aimed at Muslims be successful at recruiting non-Muslim members especially when it doesn't seem to offer any extra benefits at the moment? Will popular Youtube channels, celebrities, & companies most of which are Western have a page on Salamworld? If not, isn't it better to stick to the status quo? Does this social network have any plans for integration with mobile device operating systems that are clearly the future of computing? If not, they may forget about competing with Facebook. Let's not forget that regular consumers tend to stick to familiarity & it would require a great deal of innovation on Salamworld's part to get them to convert & be active in an entirely new community.
In any case, the future isn't written. It all depends upon the vision & efforts of Salamworld's developers & marketing department. Salamworld could be "the next Facebook", but it could also turn out be a complete waste of time & failure. All of us are just going to have to wait & see how the future turns out.
