New Delhi: Delhi Police arrested a man after a Brazilian football official lodged a molestation complaint against him.
According to a report in the Mail Today, the incident occurred at a five-star hotel in east Delhi.
As per the victim's account, she was with two Indian colleagues in the hotel when she was 'grabbed and groped' by a drunk man. He was part of a group that had approached her.
The Brazilian national registered a hand-written complaint to police at 10.45pm on Wednesday.
She raised an alarm and was immediately helped by the hotel's security staff.
The accused has been identified as a certain Mr. Vinay Gupta.
Delhi Police claim to have arrested him in 'an inebriated state' under IPC section 354A.
“I was in complete shock and started shaking and crying out of fear. I never imagined that something like this would happen. I am living in India and despite what we hear, something like this never happened to me before,” the victim was quoted as saying by the Mail Today.
"A case has been registered in the Anand Vihar Police station and the accused was arrested from the place of the incident. He was found in an inebriated state. We are investigating the matter," Bhairon Singh Gurjar, DCP, East told the newspaper.
The woman said she was walking towards a restaurant inside the hotel with two Indian colleagues at 10.45 pm on Wednesday when a group of men approached her. One of them was drunk, and he grabbed and groped her, she said in her hand-written complaint to the police. The victim said she raised an alarm and the hotel security men came to her rescue immediately. The incident was captured by the hotel's CCTV camera.
The police said that the accused Vinay Gupta was arrested under IPC section 354A for making physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures. Sources said the victim is frightened and in an utter state of shock. "I was in complete shock and started shaking and crying out of fear. I never imagined that something like this would happen. His friends tried to justify what happened saying he didn't do it on purpose, but the man was laughing. This culprit should be punished," the woman said in her complaint. Many football players from Brazil are in Delhi for the ISL.
India's leading industrialists and celebrities from sports as well as films have invested in the ISL's eight franchises based out of Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. "It is shameful that such incidents are taking place in India with foreign nationals. After so many incidents of rape, Delhi has earned a bad name. Such incidents are a blot on the city and the country. Despite the government's social awareness campaign Atithi Devo Bhavah, people are not sensitised," said a source, who was an eyewitness to the incident.
Delhi has earned the dubious label of being the rape capital of the country. Last month, a woman from Uzbekistan was molested by a man who also tried to rob her. Last year a 51-year-old Danish woman was allegedly gangraped, robbed and beaten up at knife point by eight men in central Delhi.
