Shares of Apple are plummeting after CEO Tim Cook issued a statement on Wednesday, slashing the firm’s revenue and laying the blame squarely on an economic downturn in China

“…most of our revenue shortfall to our guidance, and over 100 percent of our year-over-year worldwide revenue decline occurred in Greater China across iPhone, Mac and iPad,” Cook said.

Apple was down as much as nearly 10% on the news.

But just as Apple hits a revenue speed bump, after it decided to keep its iPhone sales figures a secret, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei’s handset sales are skyrocketing.

Huawei recently announced that it shipped more than 200 million units last year. In the third quarter of 2018, Huawei captured a nearly 15% share of global smartphone shipments, which represented a nearly 40% YOY jump.

During the first three quarters of the year, Huawei sold 145.5 million phones, versus 140.4 for Apple. This is despite the fact that Huawei’s offerings are almost entirely locked out of the world’s third-largest smartphone market, the US.

While Huawei still has a way to go in catching up to Apple in terms of revenue, it is making huge inroads in markets across the globe and its high-end models are increasingly popular.

When it comes to the Chinese market, where Huawei is the leading smartphone choice, Apple is now coming to terms with its decline. Regardless of how Tim Cook spins it, this is not merely because of China’s economic slowdown or customers’ decisions to upgrade less frequently. It is also due to the fact that customers are no longer willing to pay more when they can buy a comparable product from Huawei.

Without innovation, I don't see a turnaround for Apple in near term, I'd rather go for a Samsung Note 9 than the recent iPhone models.

Looking forward to seeing what the Note 10 has to offer, as I'm a big fan of the Note series.

Made a mistake and bought a S9 after the sales guy give me some discount...A few months later, Note 9 Comes out, and I am beating myself for it...

I actually meant the Note 10. But the note 9 is a really nice device.

I'm still using my 2 year old iPhone 7 plus, and don't see any reason to upgrade either.

I'm still on my Note 5. As I haven't really felt the urgency to upgrade because it still works relatively good.

I am however interested in what the Note 10 has to offer.

I'd go for iPhone XS but it is way overpriced. They can't value their gadgets for such an insane price when the market is flooded with better phones which cost less.

I am still on LG G3 and i will call my self stupid If I upgrade it before it dies

The reality in the major markets like US, Europe and China is that consumers are holding on to their gadgets longer than they used to- increasing from 2 years to 3 years on average. This is a big reason that global smartphone market have fallen slightly in 2018, as they did in 2017. This is totally natural given the prices of the high end products are almost twice as their early models and consumers cannot buy a new one after spending so much on the current phone every 24 months (or 12 months even better).

This volume contraction has been happening for some time and Apple’s strategy was simply lifting to price higher to offset the volume drop. This play can only work for a while and has hit a limit given other vendors are charging more less for similar specification.

Who the hell will keep buying a gadget costing an arm and a leg? Consumers are fed up with the greedy Apple. No one wants to be raped like a sheep.
