There is a question that has been lingering in my mind for a very very long time.

and it is infact a complex question.Well here goes

Everybody i have known measures the power of nations in GDP. The debates on tv, on this forum, listening to economic experts all i can hear is GDP,GDP,GDP.

The question is GDP everything ? is it more important than say justice, human happiness. does a high GDP means justice for everyone, does high GDP means that ppl are happy.

Ofcourse u need something to measure quantitatively for that GDP is fine. But why base strength of nations on it instead of things like free justice for all, human rights, the value of human life.

I mean to say why don't ppl give importance to this stuff instead of just saying GDP,GDP. If one gives more importance to these things then don't u think that GDP will automatically increase as a side effect.

No, GDP is not that important, when measuring national power or living standards.

Japan for example has an economy that is several times bigger than Russia's economy. But who will say that Japan is a more powerful nation than Russia?

A country's progress cannot just be measured in its GDP because wealth can be concentrated in the hands of a few while the country as a whole could be deep in poverty so i don't think GDP of a country is perfect measure of well being of its citizens. Quality of life indicators must also include the health care, education, work, quality food, clean water , shelter etc. Any human being is aware that people need good housing, decent food, clean water, medical care, good working conditions etc

There are too many errors in GDP reports and inaccurates numbers. It doesn't show everything it claimed.

no its not very important, Chinese people in China barely talking about GDP, they mostly talking about medical care, pension, housing price, cars and other stuffs.

GDP is not everything, but a larger GDP is still better than a smaller GDP.

Very true.

In order to be a powerful country... you need economic power, diplomatic power, and military power.

All of that costs money. So it is better to have a strong economy.

till the western countries have high GDP it will be the most important & the times when other countries like China, Russia, Brazil, Pakistan, Turkey etc.. starts beating them on GDP than countries will be measured on happines justice etc... till than GDP would be the most important factor. West hav captured our minds & we are not even able to think beyond tht wht they are saying.

The answer to this question is Yes....
You just need to divided the total GDP with the total population (of the country) and you get per capita (where the happiness lies)............ the more per capita the more happiness.................

Thanks
