What violent crackdown? You talk as if other countries did't have. What he is saying is that protest for small issues like pollution etc. is still tolerated a bit. And just a bit, because recently there was a violent crackdown on the protest in Wuhan.
Parades are obviously very common. In addition to environmental concerns, people also march for education (This is often the case when university admission places in one province are allocated to other provinces), health care and wages.
And now China's high-pollution projects have basically been shut down and moved out to SE Asian countries especially to Vietnam.
There is no tolerance of any kind of questioning on core policies of CCP leadership.
Can you openly criticise Xi Jinping's decision to remove term limits?
Can you openly criticise the cult of personality that is building around Xi?
Question what core policies?
If the policies promulgated by the Government are obviously detrimental to the Chinese people, we will express our opposition.
Just like the Sino-US trade war, the terms put forward by the United States to China, Chinese civilians are very much opposed to it. If the Chinese Government compromises to the United States & betray the interests of the Chinese citizens, it would be better to let the leaders of Chinese Communist Party step down.
Xi Jinping and the Communist Party of China have achieved very good results so far. Why do you want the Chinese to criticize them? Don't talk about craps like people should have the right to criticize leaders.
Perhaps some other countries hope that the Chinese government has no control over domestic public opinions, let them to make a profit by influencing public opinions in China.
Compared with Western countries entering China to support agents, compradors and lower the living standards of the Chinese people, I would rather the Communist Party firmly grasp the public opinions in China. And in fact, the Communist Party cannot influence the minds of the Chinese people on issues related to the livelihood. If CCP dares to cut pensions, health care and other guarantees, opponents will take to the streets directly.
