Iraqi navy recieved 2 new vessels

Iraqi navy adds two new American vessel to its inventory. Iraq has a small coastal line so the navy is not really big. The country is also focusing more on building the Ground and air forces so they have less money to spend on navy.

At the moment, the Iraqi Navy is designed for coastal water protection; stopping the smuggling of people, oil and weapons; and to protect the country's oil platforms.

So far no new orders. But there is still more boats which are being built under previous contract. Here is a list of the current equipment. There are a few other crafts which are not mentioned.
4 x 53.4-meter Saettia MK4 class offshore patrol vessels (PS 701),(PS 702), (PS 703), (PS 704)

9 deliviered out of 15 x 35-meter Swiftships Model 35PB1208 E-1455 (P-301), (P-302), (P-303), (P-304), (P-305), (P-306), (P-307), (P-308), (P-309), (P-310), (P-311), (P-312), (P-313), (P-314), (P-315)

5 x 27-meter Predator Class patrol boats (P-101), (P-102), (P-103), (P-104), (P-105)

24 Fast Aluminum Boats

10 Rigid-hulled inflatable boats

Add to that the two vessels mentioned in the thread. There are a few smaller boats probably not mentioned, but these are the major ones.


Al Basra and Al Fayhaa (Names of the two new vessels) will be "squadron leads" for the two Iraqi navy squadrons.

each squadron will have:

1 x OSV
2 x Saettia mk IV long range patrol ships
6 x Swiftships Patrol boats


the predators and smaller vessels will be for use in inshore areas only.

The navy also proposed purchasing drones to help with the surveillance of oil platforms.

I just don't like that Iraq is buying American weapons/ships/planes... we all know why the GCC buys them.. but I do not understand why Iraq is buying American weapons..

BTW what happened to Russian jets deal? was is really canceled ?

The majority of the old equipment is rendered useless.

The new army saw and were amazed by the American weapons and technology which are much more modern than the old Russian equipment that Iraq had before. The US started to supply the Iraqi army with light weapons as first (It was less expensive to give an Iraqi a weapon and let him do the job than operating the US military which cost vasts amount of money) the US also started to propose weapons for sale to Iraq, It was for Iraq's interest to buy the American weapons because they were needed quickly. The US had and still has great influence on the Iraqi decision making, that is another reason why Iraq is buying American weapons.

The US has so far refused to sell any modern technology that would threaten the gulf states, The F-16 have upgraded technology but the US refused to sell the most advanced air to air missile and only sold the previous generation missiles. The US has also refused to sell Apaches, but there is recent news that they accepted after the news of the Russian deal.

The Iraqis are also looking for quality, The Russians aren't as advanced in ship-building technology.

The Russian deal was not "cancelled" because the final contract was not signed yet. but news of corruption and commission for some persons resulted in the whole contract to be scrapped before it was finalized. A new committee has been formed and has traveled to Russia some time ago in order to make another contract, The deal will be different from the previous contract and may include jet fighters and other modern technologies.

There is news that the US has finally decided to sell Apaches, that may be to stop the Iraqis from MI-28. But there is no updates so far, everything is being kept secret so we just have to wait hopefully get some news soon.

Its better for IRAQ to have such 500-700 tons boats that have 2-cells of 4 AShMs along with 2-Cells of 3 Torpedo tubes in the side and has a multipurpose mission capability. Along with Developing by gaining some help from China/Russia or Eu to have submerge defence capability with Sonars in sea bed.... Although they should also concentrate of Air Defence along their whole border of Low-Medium-High Level system to cover up all of the IRAQ and addition of Surface Radars to their coast's as well(along with Low-Medium-High Level Air Defence system).

BTW Iraq is not only buying American weapons. Iraq has adopted a "source diversity" plan so it does not become too dependent on one country.

Iraq has purchased many Eastern weapons as well, the standard transportation helicopter is the MI 17 and many eastern APC's are in Iraq possession. Also the 6 AN-32 transport planes have been delivered as well as thousands of other light and medium military equipment,
