Iraq reportedly finalising HQ-9 air defence order

Iraq is close to finalising a USD2.5 billion order for Chinese military equipment that includes HQ-9 long-range air defence systems, Iraq's Mawazin news agency cited well-informed sources as saying on 28 November.

The HQ-9 is derived from the Russian S-300PMU system(What? What?? What??? This is news to me. News to me indeed! ). The exports version is designated the FD-2000 and another version is offered called the FT-2000 that has missiles with passive radar seekers.

The deal may also include Type 99 tanks and other Chinese military equipment, Mawazin reported.

Seems illogical to me when Iraq's primary problem is fighting terrorists, and the Israeli terrorists don't have much to do with them. Also, the price of $2.5 billion seems very steep considering Iran got the S-300PMU2 for just $1 billion.

$2.5 Billion is the total price for Chinese equipment that also includes HQ-9. Also, number of the batteries they are going to acquire, changes the price.

I hardly think they will buy more than Iran, Iraq is a much smaller country.

Extremely unlikely, given that Iraq is a close ally of Iran. Though I guess there is still a possibility that needs to have contingencies.

Iraq should buy HQ-9 as soon as possible.

As it appears, after Syria, Iraq is also determined to protect its air space from state violators. Syria is a good example as to the wonders an effective air defense system can make. Currently, Syrian government effectively regulates Turkish movement by engaging and disengaging its air defense units.

Effective air system will give Iraqi government the sovereignty lost to the state-violators.
