Iranian prison chief issues apology after hacked videos show abuse of prisoners

Most prisons in the world are not fit for human beings. Iran is no different.

What can be seen in these clips is classes above prison conditions prevailing in other developing nations, and even in numerous developed ones, be it in terms of cleanliness, equipment or comfort. Many of us have watched enough TV documentaries and reports about detention centers in Asia, South America, Africa and then the US, UK, France etc and as long as one remains intellectually honest, one cannot but acknowledge how well Evin prison is looking in comparison.

What is different about Evin prison is that some of those locked there did nothing wrong , other than speaking out against the regime.

As said before all sequences are from the main section of Evin, which makes up some 80% of the area of the compound and is housing probably upwards of 95% of detainees. People imprisoned there were convicted for regular offenses and crimes (theft, robbery, various forms of fraud, bodily harm, murder and so on). The others, in essence, are being held for threatening national security.

Criticizing, railing, vituperating, insulting, even threatening the political order of the Islamic Republic and its Leadership is the favorite national sport of some segments of the Iranian population conditioned by the massive propaganda campaign orchestrated by the US, EU, zionist and Saudi regimes. It is a permanent daily habit of some millions of people, none of whom have ever landed at Evin for this sort of action. They'd need to do much more in order to be handed a jail sentence - for instance, seriously disturb public order, join terrorist or anti-constitutional organizations, cooperate with hostile spy agencies or threaten national security in other ways.

To find people locked up merely for speaking their mind, there's no need to look further than the sinister dungeons run by Tel Aviv's official and unofficial allies in the region: Bahrein, UAE, Saudi Arabia (as we know, criticizing the latter regime can get its citizens dismembered alive and dissolved in acid inside a diplomatic mission).

One might also ask oneself what horrible crimes the many hundreds of Palestinian children imprisoned by the zionist regime could possibly have committed to deserve ending up behind bars...

Israel arrests 230 Palestinian children in 3 months

Most arrests took place in Jerusalem, says rights group

Awad Rajoub | 05.04.2021

RAMALLAH, Palestine

Israeli authorities have arrested 230 Palestinian children since the beginning of this year, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said Sunday in a report.

The report comes just a day before Palestinian Children’s Day, which is celebrated annually on April 5 with cultural, educational and media activities aimed at raising awareness on the plight of Palestinian children, “who lack the most basic rights due to the Israeli occupation,” according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The arrests were concentrated in the occupied city of Jerusalem, said the PPS, which monitors the conditions of detainees in Israeli prisons.
The rights group said that detainees are often released either on bail or by transferring them to house arrest, without indicating the numbers of those who were released.

"The imprisoned children are subjected to various forms of abuse, including being denied food or drink for long hours, verbal abuse and being detained under harsh conditions," it said.

The Palestinian branch of Defense for Children International (DCI) said in a statement that 85% of the children arrested last year were "subjected to physical violence."

The organization, a global movement that promotes the rights of children, also noted that it has documented 27 cases in which occupation forces detained children in solitary confinement citing investigation purposes for two or more days in 2020, adding that the practice amounts to “torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment."

The global movement said it documented the issuance of administrative detention orders without charge or trial against 36 children since October 2015, two of whom are still in detention, adding that the occupation killed nine children in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 2020.

An estimated 4,400 Palestinians are believed to be detained in Israeli prisons, including 39 women and 350 administrative detainees, according to official Palestinian data.

Administrative detention allows Israeli authorities to extend the detention of a prisoner without charge after the expiration of the sentence, which ranges between two to six months.

Video shows Israeli troops detaining Palestinian children

The children were detained in a field near an illegal outpost in the occupied West Bank and released after several hours.

Israeli forces detained five Palestinian children for several hours after they were confronted by Jewish settlers while gathering wild vegetables near a settlement outpost in the occupied West Bank, an Israeli human rights group said on Thursday.

B’Tselem released video of the arrest in the southern Hebron Hills, in which heavily armed Israeli soldiers can be seen dragging the children away.

Footage shot earlier shows the children gathering akoub, a plant similar to artichoke, when two masked settlers emerge from a grove of trees near the illegal settler outpost of Havat Maon.

The outpost is located near Masafer Yatta, a collection of about 19 Palestinian hamlets. The area is a frequent target of assaults by the Israeli military and settlers.

“This is another example of the absolute disregard on the part of Israeli authorities and forces on the ground to the wellbeing and rights of Palestinians, no matter how young or vulnerable,” B’Tselem spokesman Amit Gilutz said.

“The youngest boy from yesterday’s incident is eight years old,” he added.

The children, whose ages range from eight to 13, were held for about five hours at a police station in the settlement of Kiryat Arba, according to Gaby Lasky, a human rights lawyer who is representing them. The two eldest, who are 12 and 13, were ordered to return next week for more questioning as, under Israeli military law, they are deemed old enough to face charges.

The Israeli military said “a number of suspects” were detained after they “infiltrated into a house’s private property.” It said they were transferred to the Israeli police, who released them to their parents.

According to Defense for Children International, Israel prosecutes between 500 and 700 Palestinian children in military courts each year. Prisoners’ rights group Addameer has said 140 Palestinian children are currently imprisoned by Israel.

Havat Maon is one of dozens of settler outposts established without Israeli government authorisation, in addition to some 130 officially recognised settlements in the occupied West Bank. The settlements, which range from remote hilltop outposts to full-fledged towns, are home to nearly a half-million Israelis.

Lasky said it’s “crazy” to accuse the children of trespassing in an outpost that was built illegally.

The Palestinians view all settlements as illegal and a major obstacle to their goal of bringing about an independent state including the West Bank, which Israel captured in the 1967 war. The international community also largely views the settlements as illegal and an impediment to peace.

On Thursday, a group of Israeli settlers fired their guns towards two Palestinian children in Masafer Yatta. The two children, 12 and 13 years old, were not wounded in the attack.

Rateb Jabour, coordinator of the Wall and Colonization Resistance Commission in Hebron, told Palestinian news agency WAFA that the settlers opened fire towards the children while they were grazing sheep in the area of Masafer Yatta.

Many of the settler outposts have been established by religious nationalists who are hostile to the local Palestinian population. B’Tselem has reported a rise in settler violence in recent months and said the Israeli military often turns a blind eye.

Statistics on Palestinian minors in the custody of Israeli security forces

Updated:
28 April 2021

Since October 2020, the IPS has stopped providing B’Tselem with figures in response to requests under the Freedom of Information Law.

At the end of September 2020, 157 Palestinian minors were held in Israeli prisons as security detainees and prisoners, at least two of whom were held in administrative detention. Another 2 Palestinian minors were held in Israel Prison Service facilities for being in Israel illegally. The IPS considers these minors – both detainees and prisoners – criminal offenders.

In addition, a small number of minors are held in IDF-run facilities for short periods of time.

*Due to IPS policy as of May 2020 not to provide B'Tselem with figures under 5, the overall number of detainees and prisoners, as provided B'Tselem, may not match the sum total of detainees and prisoners in the various categories.

B'Tselem petitioned the Central District Court to revoke this policy.

The following figures were provided by the Israeli military and the IPS.
