On November 13, the Tasnim News agency published a video showing an AB-212ASW helicopter of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy making a bold low pass a few meters away from the US Navy USS Essex (LHD-2) landing helicopter dock in the Persian Gulf.
According to the Iranian news agency, the helicopter was conducting a “reconnaissance flight” over the large US warship.

At the time of the encounter, USS Essex was carrying four AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, four UH-1Y Venom utility helicopters, one AV-8B Harrier II ground attack aircraft, two MH-60R Seahawk multi-mission helicopters and eight CMV-22B Osprey tiltrotor military aircraft.

The US Navy is yet to comment on the encounter, which was not the first of its kind this year. Iran’s naval forces confronted the Americans in more than one occasion.

In October, speedboats of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intercepted a vessel of the US Navy in the Persian Gulf. The IRGC also seized a Vietnamese-flagged oil tanker right in front of US Navy vessels.
Tensions between Iran and the US continue to increase despite the recent agreement on the resumptions of the nuclear talks in Vienna.

This short video starts after the IRINA AB-212 Helicopter approached the USS Essex from the rear and circled it at a very low altitude below the USS Essex's flight deck. These American sailors know that they are being watched by Iranian Shore and sea born AShM batteries. They know they have to behave themselves!

The Bell-Textron 212 and 214 were dubbed Bell Isfahan in the 70's as Iran in less than a decade imported over 500 top notch military helicopters.

Following this, with a substantial number of helicopters arriving from America’s Bell Textron in 1973, extensive planning to support the new fleet was started.

Thus, the Iran Helicopter Support and Renewal Company (IHSRC – or Panha in Persian) became the largest helicopter maintenance centre in the Middle East. The Iranian military Havanirooz base at Kermanshah is the largest rotary aviation facility in the region.

Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, severance of ties with the USA and the imposed war inflicted to the new regime, IHSRC experts were able to become self-sufficient in the maintenance and renewal of Iran’s helicopter fleet, with the aim of supporting Islamic combatants in the battlefront.
In the wake of these achievements, the responsibility to repair and support different models of military and civil helicopters, including the Bell 205, Bell 206, Bell 212, Bell 214, CH-54 Chinook, RH-53D, SH-3D, Bell 412 and Mil Mi-17, belonging to domestic companies and also military forces, such as the Iran Red Crescent Organization, National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), and Iran Army Aviation, was given to Panha.
Bell’s relationship with Iran is long and complex. The current Toufan II (Super Cobra) is derivative of original Bell AH-1J Sea Cobra that the Iranian military effectively used in the Jange Tahmili.

During the 1970s, Iran’s then-leader, Mohammad-Reza Shah Pahlavi, developed a serious taste for western aircraft, including Bells, and soon built the largest fleet of military helicopters in the Middle East, including Huey-class 205 and 214s He also purchased more than 200 AH-1J Sea Cobra gunships.

But the Shah wanted to do more than buy Bells; he also wanted to build them.
While continuing to import hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of Bells, the Shah’s government inked a deal with the company to pay half the development costs of a new variant of the 214A, a stretched and more powerful version labelled the 214ST, to be produced in Iran. Under the deal, Bell built a large aircraft factory in Iran at Isfahan.

I have a story to tell you..years go I worked in Bell helicopter in Texas...I had an American Vietnam vet Huey helicopter pilot who was working and sitting next to me..He knew I was Iranian origin..We became very good personal friends...It was during the Iran/Iraq war..one day he told me..We (Bell) sold some (I think 6) of the helicopters "your shah" paid for its development to your enemy IRAQ..those helicopters were found and recovered by the US forces in the Iraq desert and many US troops were surprised to see US made helos in the Iraqi hands....Moral of the story...spend your development funds inside the country on your own defence industry.
