Iranian Army Chief’s Pakistan Visit to Impact New Delhi-Tehran Ties

Iran has sought the help of Pakistan in crushing Daesh*. Iran's Chief of Army Staff Major Gen Mohammad Bagheri recently visited the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and discussed ways to boost defense ties with his Pakistani counterpart, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. He also met with President Mamnoon Hussain and Foreign Minister Abdullah Hussain Haroon.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — An Indian strategic expert said that the crucial meeting between the Iranian army chief and his Pakistani counterpart, which came in the backdrop of uncertainty in India’s engagement with Iran due to US sanctions, is likely to have a decisive impact on India-Iran relations in the near future.

A joint statement issued at the end of the meeting mentioned cooperation in the fight against Daesh.

"The Iranian army chief's visit to Pakistan is significant amid the changing geopolitics of the region after US sanctions against Iran. The visit will also impact India-Irans ties, which are at a low ebb since the US sanctions. Iran's coziness with Pakistan is likely to adversely affect India's relations with Iran and it is likely to impact the Chabahar Port project also," Qamar Agha, a leading strategic expert, told Sputnik.

Iran and Pakistan have also charted a comprehensive military framework for mutual cooperation in the areas of security, the fight against terrorism and the exchange of information, according to a joint statement.

Iran and Pakistan share a 1,000-kilometer-long common border. This is the first visit by an Iranian army chief to Pakistan since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Agreed. Also, although india thought that supporting ISIS was good for weakening Pakistan, however, india walked into this trap on the behest of none other the US/Nato and Israel. These countries encouraged india to take this path cause it was good for india.

First of all india is not that powerful to bring ISIS into any other third country.
And india's relation with iran is independent of irans relations with any other puny country.

And we are not brothers or wish to be brothers with any country, we have business and diplomatic relations with iran and that will stay as long it benefits both countries like symbiosis. All these terms like brothers or religion brothers or natural allies applies for puny countries.

It would have been good for India if ISIS was only focused on Pakistan but every one wants to use ISIS for it's own purpose. Like USA wants ISIS to go after Russia and China, Israel and Gulf wants them to go after Iran, India want's them to go after Pakistan. ISIS is only 10000 strong in Afghanistan according to Russian intelligence. Taliban are in far stronger position. Although ISIS being well funded cannot fight Taliban and Pakistan Iran Russia China. Taliban and ISIS are in a continuous fight in Afghanistan for past few days and Taliban are gaining ground US is pushing for a peace deal with Taliban to give a breathing ground to ISIS who is already exhausted from Syria and Iraq. This whole situation landed India in bad water now Iran and Pakistan are getting closer due to ISIS in Afghanistan and US sanctions on Iran are throwing India under the bus. If US removes sanctions Israel cries and if US imposes sanctions India dies, this is the whole situation and then there is also a thing called Chabahar.

It's shocking how Iran thought they (the Indians) are allies in any shape or form. The Indians are ready to stab Iran in the back at the first opportunity they can get. That's why the US hasn't slapped sanctions on the Indians because they are pawn in their game. The Indian regime is pumping anti-Muslim propaganda into the heart of every Hindu and it's only a matter of time before their hindu soldiers are spewed onto the Iranians. Iran has given India a reason and a stake (Chabahar) for military intervention when the time comes for regime change in Iran.

By using his logic, the same week Iran chief of general staff visited Pakistan, Iran's deputy foreign minister visited India and called India a close friend which means his visit will adversely affect Islamabad-Tehran ties.

If you could infer ....... indian diplomacy has been put to real test for the first time. Previously it was all easy, with all the bad press directed at Pakistan, india could easily whine isolation for Pakistan, could easily come up with terrorism slogans and what not ..... now US is changing the definition of terrorism and terrorists .... and india will have to tow the line or get back to its senses and drop the attitude of cry baby. Its a hard option ...... be a regional mediocre ally of countries that include Pakistan as a main player ....... or pledge allegiance to countries that don't share border with india ...... and become their pawn. The cover has been blown ....... no more hideous covert activities and then claiming the victim.

What you miss big time is that it's Iranian Army Chief meeting Pakistan's Army Chief, Pakistan a country that has remained a front line ally for US and Nato for the whole of WOT ........ has finally defied US pressure. There is a clear break from towing the US line ..... it's finally looking like Pakistan has decided to go for it's interests only no matter what the pressures be, the internal politics and external policy shifts indicate that Pakistan has decided to become a regional strong player.

These recent improvement in Pak-Iran relation is just to deal with common threat, don't expect anything beyond that. India is eyes and ears for US & Allies in Iran and plan B for logistics support for US in Afghanistan, so anyone thinking that she will be forced to bring trade to zero level or give up Chahbhar is living in fools paradise - this can happen only if Pakistan give full support against Iran which I don't see happening because Pakistan's own survival is at stake not out of any love.
