Iran won’t be allowed to have nukes, US assures Gulf states | Arab News
Published — Saturday 16 May 2015

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama has pledged America’s “ironclad commitment” to Gulf nations to help protect their security, pointedly mentioning the potential use of military force and offering assurances that a potential nuclear agreement with Iran would not leave them more vulnerable.

At the summit-closing news conference, Obama said Gulf leaders hadn’t been asked to “sign on the bottom line” to approve work in process. They agreed, he said, “that a comprehensive, verifiable solution that fully addresses the regional and international concerns about Iran’s nuclear program is in the security interests of the international community, including our GCC partners.”

Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said Arab leaders were “assured that the objective is to deny Iran the ability to obtain a nuclear weapon” and that all pathways to such a weapon would be cut off.

He added that it was too early to know if a final nuclear agreement would be acceptable, saying, “We don’t know if the Iranians will accept the terms they need to accept.”

Addressing reporters after a Camp David summit with six Gulf leaders, Obama said: “As we’ve declared in our joint statement, the United States is prepared to work jointly with GCC member states to deter and confront an external threat to any GCC state’s territorial integrity that is inconsistent with the UN charter.”
He added: “Let me underscore, the United States keeps our commitments.”

The president said the US believes Iran’s focus would be on shoring up an economy that has struggled under the sanctions pressure.

Obama promised a “concrete series of steps” from the one-day summit.

Following Obama’s remarks, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, said that his country and other GCC states hope that the Iran agreement would be a stabilizing factor in the region. He added that the talks were fruitful and candid in all regional issues.

“In the event of such aggression or the threat of such aggression, the United States stands ready to work with our GCC partners to determine urgently what action may be appropriate, using the means at our collective disposal, including the potential use of military force, for the defense of our GCC partners,” the joint statement added.

On the sidelines of the summit, a White House spokesperson said that the White House was open to the idea of granting its Gulf Cooperation Council partners major non-NATO ally status.

noone believes yankee clowns anymore.

they lost all their credibilty after all of their political scandals.

.
The GCC got snubbed this time.
The US is doing what it can to stay out of the conflict.

.
Not a fan of Iran, but i am inclined to believe, that even if Iran goes nuclear, It's not the Iranian nukes which should be adding to the Arab anxieties. When it comes to the security environment in the Middle East, Arab states have clearly got their threat perception mixed up with their hatred for the Iranians and while the ground realities are pretty much beyond their knowing. They have even failed to draw the lessons from the current turmoil in the Middle East and instead of bringing to proportion some prudent & coherent plan of action to ensure regional security and peace, they are blithely consolidating the western grasp on the region---------Which has brought nothing, but destruction of colossal magnitude.

.
Well USA & the world didn't want us to have nukes, but with hard work we did achieve our goals.

Not Allowing & preventing are two different things.

Exactly, thats why 4 out of 6 GCC heads of state snubbed Obama, and decided to go forward with their nuclear/missiles program.

Another point here is that Iran has been following a very aggressive missile program.

Is one to believe they will launch a 1 million USD missile for a 600kg ordinary explosive load ?

Secondly, Iran doesn't have the technology or the industry to sustain a proper civil nuclear cycle,
so why were they enriching so much Uranium ?

Iran has got full enrichment cycle from mine to fuel rod through centrifuges and laser ... it's obvious that has got the knowledge and enjoys an industrial enrichment program run by Iranian made and designed centrifuges ...
The reason behind enriching is obvious :
1:it's our right to enrich for peaceful purposes .
2: to force western countries to accept our right to enrich uranium ... in fact without proving your capability no one would buy your words ....

On missile :
Iran is not after nuke .. it's a blind weapons , Iran proved it during Iran-Iraq war .. although we were attacked by chemical weapons we didn't retaliate .... so the only way remain is working on more accurate and effective missiles ...

you did not retaliate to chemical attacks of saddam because noone accepted to sell you chemical weapons.

mulla mulla

.
Blame it on discovery nuclear energy in the first place. It is only a matter of time before nuclear weapons proliferate.

.
After buying military hardware from petrodollars for 10 years, how will USA stop Iran from getting a nuke if it decides to go for one?

If you had slightest intention of not being a troll, you'd know that even many technolically backward countries are able to produce chemical weapons if they decide to, let alone Iran which has one of the most advanced biological and chemical sectors in region.

We already had chemial weapons during the war, but never used them.

Read the report and next time before embarrassing yourself like this, do some research.

Any country with a base industry involving chemicals can make chemical weapons, eg textile industries.
