Iran, Russia to Join Hands to Build Fighter Jets

Iran and Russia will cooperate in the “joint designing and manufacturing” of combat aircraft, the Islamic Republic’s defense minister announced on Saturday.

Briefing reporters in Tehran, Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan said Russia had agreed to cooperate with Iran after learning about the Islamic Republic’s capabilities, Tasnim news agency reported.

“In the field of (manufacturing) fighter jets, we will not develop such cooperation with any country other than Russia,” General Dehghan emphasized.

The minister said Tehran has military ties with 35 countries including China, Iraq, Russia, Oman, India, Pakistan and Belarus, in different fields, such as technical expertise and engineering, maintenance, and the sale of military systems and weapons.

He further touched on Iran’s progress in the aviation industry, saying Tehran has plans to sell a range of homegrown Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to foreign customers.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems, the agency reported.

Tehran has always assured other nations that its military power poses no threat to the regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

Iran to Be Massively Represented at MAKS-2015 Air Show

Nearly 40 Iranian companies will present a wide range of products in several fields, including the space, civil and military aviation industries.

The Iranian delegation will be massively represented during the MAKS-2015 Aviation and Space Show which will take place on August 25-30 in the city of Zhukovsky, outside Moscow, Shahram Vaghefinejad, executive director of Iran’s aeronautic company Asman-e Fanaravan, said in an interview with Sputnik Persian.

"The MAKS international air show can be considered a full-fledged successor of one of the world’s oldest air shows which was held in the Russian Empire since 1911. During the Soviet era, the exhibition was replaced with various Air Force exercises, and since 1993 it has been held in its actual format. First of all, this format is distinguished with the unprecedented level of organization and its prestigious status," Vaghefinejad explained.

MAKS is among the world’s leading air shows, to be included with the oldest, Le Bourget, near Paris, and the Dubai Airshow. In some respects, it even outperforms them. This is why the Iranian aerospace industry is highly interested in the MAKS show, the expert underscored.

During the first years after the USSR collapsed, Iran’s participation was limited. Since 2000, the country has sent its delegations of experts and businessmen to Zhukovsky, he said. Initially, the Iranian booth covered an area of 8-12 square meters, and now it is 150.

During the show, Iran will be represented both by state-owned aerospace companies and numerous private businesses, he added. Products by three brands will be presented at the MAKS-2015 – the Iranian National Space Agency, Aviko aircraft making company, and the Iranian association of air and space manufacturers.

Nearly 40 Iranian companies will present a wide range of products in several fields, including satellites, satellite carriers, mockup and prototypes of several airplanes and helicopters, a domestic-made navigation system as well as engines and parts for civil aviation, he pointed out.

This year’s MAKS is also going to be special for Iran due to wide possibilities which have emerged after a final agreement was reached over the Iranian nuclear program, Vaghefinejad underscored.

"The agreement opened way for us to cooperate both with Russian and other foreign companies. We are seriously considering the possibility of joint aviation and space production with Russia and the purchase of Russian-made equipment," he said.

The XII International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2015 will start on Tuesday in the Russian city of Zhukovsky with over 400,000 people expected to attend the venue during the six-day event. About 760 companies from 35 countries, are expected to participate in the air show

Well said Haman Jan.

The life has interesting turns doesn't it? For the last decade, we were the ones under sanctions looking for favors from other nations. Now all of a sudden, Russia finds itself in Iran's situation. The fact is, Russia doesn't have many friends or international partners at the moment. It's traditional allies in Europe have all joined the West. Cuba seem to be looking West as well.

Given all that, Iran is one of the few options for cooperation left for Russia and Putin knows it very well. Iran should be wise to exploit this situation to the fullest or we may not get such an opportunity anytime soon.

As @2800 said, Russia is a very good market for Iran's exports as well. So I wouldn't be surprised if all these deals go through. However, history shows the chance of these deals actually happening is usually 50% so I'd say it is reasonable to say that half of the deals you mentioned above will be executed.

If Iran and Russia cooperate in air defense and aircraft technologies Iran will upgrade its military capabilities to the world's class levels!

China, Russia, India (and Germany) are friends of Iran. Iran must boost her ties with them to the highest levels and show her middle finger to western enemies.
However we should know all of our power comes from inside of Iran. If we be powerful and go forward then world will respect our power and we will find good friends and also ward off hostility of our enemies. Otherwise if we don't be powerful we won't progress.

ALCON , this would be great if implemented : security-wise for Iran and economic-wise for Russia .

i hope they are all implemented . wouldn't like to see anything western-made in my country when we can buy eastern-equivalents
