LONDON: Iran’s oil minister dismissed India’s decision to cut oil imports from Tehran in 2017/18 by a fifth as a threat on Wednesday, in an escalation of a dispute over a giant gas field contract.

Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters last week that Indian state refiners were going to cut oil imports from Iran, as New Delhi seeks to put pressure on Tehran to award the Farzad B gas field to an Indian consortium.

“India is one of our good costumers, but we cannot sign (a) contract under threat,” Bijan Zanganeh was quoted as saying by Iran’s ISNA news agency.

“India’s cut of oil imports from Iran will not cause any trouble to us as we have other buyers,” he added.

Zanganeh said despite an extension of deadlines, India has not offered an acceptable proposal for the development of the gas field.

“Their proposal was not profitable to Iran … We sent them a letter saying we are keen to continue negotiations but under sensible conditions, not threats.”

India, Iran’s biggest oil buyer after China, was among a handful of countries that continued to deal with the Tehran despite Western sanctions over its nuclear programme.

A consortium headed by ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL), the overseas investment arm of Indian explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corp, discovered Farzad B in the Farsi offshore block in 2008.

The consortium, which also includes Oil India and Indian Oil Corp, could not obtain permission to develop the field due to Western sanctions, but those sanctions were removed last year.

India and Iran had both been hopeful of wrapping up the Farzad B deal by March, although Zanganeh said Iran has asked other countries to submit their proposals for its development.

Well, it's a good step. Iran should realize that they are a dignified and self-reliant nation. As a Pakistani, I only have good wishes for Iran and Iranians.

.
of course "they" are "not concerned" , they don't consider oil as their own property , iranian president mamood ahmedinajad said it himself in one of his speeches , he said "from this oil there will be leftovers for you too"

.
india should do fair deal with iran.. not by threatening.. why don't they understand that muslims will no longer work with anyone forcefully. it is our nature. either we are peaceful, humble and friendly by our deeply heart or we are like a nightmare if you ever try to let us down. we work on our conditions no matter what. india's condition hurting iran. but iran condition not hurting india.. so better to work together with iran condition.

India cannot threaten any nation to sell it any thing. Modi thinks he is already a Super power lol.

As the ayatollah gorges himself in his ivory tower built by israel he screams "my people need not money we have too much" all while his people, withering away under the influence of soma, chant "we are full, we don't need anymore".

This guy bijon might not be concerned right now but he will once he realizes not many countries want your junk low quality high sulfur heavy crude oil.

Looks like entire Asia is having discord.

- India and Iran on trade related matter but at the same time cooperating in other ventures.
- Pakistan and Iran on regional geopolitics but otherwise friendly ties.
- India and Pakistan on collision course and yet try to maintain ties.
- Afghanistan and Pakistan on collision course always.
- China and India on various issues but cooperate on WTO and development of their poor people internationally.
- Japan and China on collision always.
- Korea and Japan remain tensed.
- Vietnam and China remain tensed.

Now even the Europeans cannot laugh any more.

After issuing a threat of economic sanctions now Indians are trying to compare the issue with rest of the world. Every one knows India is doing this on call from UAE and USA. India as eaten Iran's resources when Iran was under sanction now India cannot do it any more so India is trying to use offensive maneuvers.

But Gas is very important as for many things from fertilizers to cooking and oil demand is not going to die for many years to come.

Not to mention Donald Trump who's gonna improve american infrastructure , and buy us all more oil .

Oil is cheap nowadays.

Electric vehicles are becoming a huge industry, Renewable energy, Shale oil and gas, the energy revolution is moving away from oil.

Best to make hay when the sun is shining, if I got that expression correct.

You guys have already invested around $360 billion in green and renewable energy. That is an extremely good initiative to secure people's future.

We are also focusing on solar energy battery production. To get a head start, we have invited Elon Musk's Tesla Motors to sell their cars in India and create an ecosystem of the car's charging ports across India's future "fuel stations".

I think with the resources already on the verge of depletion and both India and China having huge populations, we need to quickly move away from hydrocarbons.

The way US and some other countries are heading, I feel that in the future, everyone will be off the grid with sustainable solar and motion-powered electricity offered to everyone.
