The foundations were laid 2001 to 2007 by the NATO invasion of Afghanistan.Beginning of TTP attacks and West anti-Pakistan rhetoric and pressure.
Most of those groups are Salafist Takfiris. They don’t represent Deobandis.
The propaganda that Deobandis and Wahhabis/Salafis are the same is totally incorrect.
We are essentially Orthodox Sunnis who oppose jahaliyyah customs like too much influence of peers and grave worship. We are also more inclined towards the rule of law (fiqh) and Sufism (which does not lead to kufr.)
Maulana Maududi inspired many people around the world with his writings including Sayyid Qutb in Egypt and Imam Khomeini of Iran.
Actual Deobandis are pro-Shia and pro-Iran as we take influence from the Iranian revolution and our political ideas are not much different.
Yes, we separated long ago. Pakistan’s formation breathed new life into the movement here due to Maulana Maududi and Maulana Shabbir Usmani.
Deoband in India is one of Modi’s biggest supporters, for example. They tend to be very sectarian and archaic as a symptom of being under pressure.
