Iran Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani

Tue Oct 8, 2013 3:13PM

Iran Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has underlined the importance of the completion of Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project as a prelude to promotion of Tehran-Islamabad relations.

“The Peace [gas] Pipeline is among the important projects which will lead to the expansion of trade cooperation [between] the two countries,” Larijani said in a Tuesday meeting with Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Geneva.

Iran has already built 900 kilometers of the pipeline on its soil and is helping to build the 700-kilometer part of the pipeline on the Pakistani side.

The IP pipeline is designed to help Pakistan to overcome its growing energy needs at a time when the country of over 180 million people is grappling with serious energy shortages.

Larijani also underscored the need for a series of negotiations between Iran and Pakistan about regional security and said, “The issue of terrorism is among the key regional issues, which necessitates joint cooperation between officials of the two countries to resolve it.”
Ayaz Sadiq, for his part, praised Iran-Pakistan’s friendly relations, noting that the two countries should find ways for further expansion of bilateral parliamentary ties.

He pointed to the US objection to implementation of the IP pipeline, adding that Pakistan vigorously pursues this project.

The United States has long been threatening Pakistan with economic sanctions if Islamabad goes ahead with the gas pipeline project. But the Pakistani government has no plans to reverse the decision.

The Pakistani National Assembly speaker described the US as the main culprit in the expansion of terrorist activities in the region, and expressed the Pakistani parliament’s preparedness to fully cooperate with Iran to counter this phenomenon.

Russia has expressed readiness to extend financial and technical assistance to the Islamabad government in order to complete the multi-billion-dollar pipeline under construction to carry natural gas from Iran to Pakistan.

The offer was made by Russian Deputy Energy Minister Yury Sentyurin on Wednesday during talks between Pakistani and Russian energy officials in Islamabad, Pakistan’s English-language newspaper The News reported.

The report added that a Russian private joint stock company has shown willingness to provide technical and financial assistance for the mega project.

Both sides have decided that Pakistan should prepare a draft agreement and then send it to Russia.

The Russian officials would then examine the draft agreement and make a decision on extending financial and technical assistance to Pakistan for the gas pipeline project.

The final construction phase of the IP pipeline was inaugurated on March 11.

Iran has already built 900 kilometers of the pipeline on its soil and is helping to build the 700-kilometer part of the pipeline on the Pakistani side.

The IP pipeline is designed to help Pakistan overcome its growing energy needs at a time when the country of over 180 million people is grappling with serious energy shortages.

Well, watching Russia today, I know Russians are trying to form an anti Euro/American narrative in Asia, along with Iran, and even China, but I didn't know they would go so far to actually physically manifest that narrative in Pakistan. I was under the impression, Russians are reluctant to extend their relation with Pakistan, because we allied with US against USSR.

Maybe, Iran for some reason, really need this gas pipeline, to enhance their relation with Islamabad, so Iran doesn't get isolated in the region by its immediate neighbours? Iranians want the Russians to be in this now?

PS: One of the anti American/Euro narrative that Russia gives in its international news channel (Russia Today) is, how the dollar is controlled by few rich "bankers" AKA Jews, and we need to free our selves of this superficial currency of "debt" and go back to gold standards of trade. One of the countries that accept this Narrative is Iran. Pakistan, to some extend also might share this narrative, because of our stance against interest, and to free our economic system of interest, which we have failed to do so for the last 60 + years within our own country.

Sooner the better - we need better ties with Iran...with a trade potential of up to 8-10 billion/annum!

Yesterday we had Pakistani members threatening to nuke Iran.. Majlis member take note.

we cannot afford bad relations with iran, which the west wants, bad relations with iran means emergence of sectrian conflicts in pakistan, if that happens and if iran even decides to supports their shia people against sunni people, thats it, everything will be out of control, bcz shia constitute nearly 20% of muslim population of pakistan, and they are mysteriously united with iran where ever in the world they are found, therefore go for shia sunni unity, and build good relations with iran,

The west wants nothing of that sort as much as the Saudis want it.

dude saudi is pro west, saudi wants means west wants, saudis do not have any sort of independnce, n they are happy with this, they have lost their ideology, n so they have nuthing to stand for and fight against, these are all clients saudi egypt qatar jordan as far as political and military leadership is concerned, the real culprits are those who have an agenda and who have an ideology, and that is israel, which has led US by its nose to do their work for them,

Iran is like Saudi Arabia. They will dissect every Muslim population in the world to discover the proportion of sects.

If someone is a Sunni, they are quickly tagged as supporters of Saudis. Similarly if someone is a Shi'a, they will be called supporters of Iran.

Just like that both of them exchange mysterious slogans like Wahbbis and Kafirs, with the objective of gaining supporters. This got so complex over time that these supporters decided to start using foreign influence to fight against their own state. Iraq and Syria are two examples i'd like to mention here. What you see happening there today is a pure sunni-shi'a conflict.

Pakistan is a different country. Here our government and people always had a soft corner. The recent surveys identified 75% of people liking Iran and 80% liking Saudi Arabia. This is the height of stupidity as it has been proven indeed that our aspirations are for an ummah. If a blind person is asked for an opinion on this, he is going to tell you it aint gonna happen sooner than later.

How do you handle both Iran and Saudii Arabia ? Very simple. First our nation needs to grow some balls. Tell these folks what our national interests are. We are happy to have economic relations such increasing trade etc. However, it will be unacceptable to cooperate on stuff like religious networking ; We don't want mullahs and their dictations.

@Armstrong sahi kaha ?

i believe it is becoming impossible to handle saudi and iran at the same time, if u look at syria, it seems shia sunni conflict, but those who are fueling rebels are saudis qataris israel usa while those on opposite side are iran russia and china as well, yes u are rite i also believe we are one of those sunni countries who does not hate shia, unlike other arab countries if u look at them even the scholars are obsessed with filling poison into the minds of sunni muslims against shia,

u have to understand that ISRAEL has planned to demolish masjid al aqsa, and construct their temple which was destroyed 2000 years ago when the jews were expelled from this land (jerusalem), and when that happens, muslims around the world will be enraged, and so before this takes place, israel has to make sure that no muslim should have a weapon that can threaten israel, and only pakistan has such weapons, they have been trying as best as they can to provoke civil war in pakistan by exporting terrorism so they can get an excuse to take the nukes, but they have not succeeded so far, but if they succeed in provoking sunni shia civil war in islamic world, then things will go out of control,

its not possible on both sides iran and saudi arabia politically, thats my opinion, bcz these two countries are thirsty for each others blood, i think pakistan should improve relations with iran, bcz saudi arabia is not exactly saudi arabia but amreican kingdom of saudi arabia and is playing a sinister role in politics
