'We never expected accommodation problems when we arrived. The college residences are full and there are no suitable accommodations'

Around 25 Canadore College students in North Bay, Ontario are living inside a tent on the side of Commerce Crescent.

They plan to stay there until Canadore College finds them affordable accommodation or they get 100 per cent of their fees back.

Several students spoke to local media Wednesday about having to pay tuition of around $14,000 and housing costs of $700 to $1,600 per month. They held a demonstration just outside Canadore College’s Commerce Court Campus Wednesday morning.

They are asking for housing costs to be around $250 to $630 because they pay so much more in tuition fees compared to domestic students.

Manpreet Kaur said 50 to 100 students are in crisis mode.

She said 50 to 60 students have already left North Bay because they have no place to live and have moved to another college in southern Ontario.

Kaur, an international student from India, is enrolled in her first year of project management IT at Canadore College.

“We never expected accommodation problems when we arrived,” she said.

“The college residences are full and there are no suitable accommodations. We are staying in the tent as of Tuesday. It’s cold in the night.”

Kaur said Canadore has offered temporary residence at a hotel for two nights, however, there’s no long-term plan.

Contacted by The Nugget for an update, the college issued a prepared statement via email.

“Every year, many domestic and international students face challenges finding housing,” the college said. “Canadore College has been communicating with students since January about the realities of the local housing market, including the cost of rental accommodation.”

Canadore College says some students have refused the housing options presented to them, “but we continue to work with those who want assistance on a case-by-case basis to find housing.”

“We still have emergency accommodation available, and we will have every student in permanent housing as soon as possible,” according to the email.Jaskirat Singh says he feels “very bad.”The students are sleeping on the cement with no blankets. Food is being provided by donations and Burger King.
“We will stay in this tent as long as we have to,” Singh said.

He said some international students receive $630 per month for accommodations, but that isn’t nearly enough.

Singh said he picked Canadore because of the number of courses and the good reputation it has.

He said if he knew the reality of the situation he would have never boarded the plane to come to North Bay.

Harinder Singh, from Montreal Youth Student Organization, said he came to know three weeks ago international students were struggling to find accommodations in North Bay.

He said similar issues have been happening in other colleges across Ontario, although the issues in other communities have mostly been rectified.

“We will remain here until they find a place to live,” Singh said, adding he was shocked to learn students were sleeping outside.

canadian educaters got greedy oversold courses.
No one is without fault
Provincial governments let diploma mills pop up offering courses useless to Canada's future

Federal government issues study visas based on numbers provided by said diploma mills, and are also held by the balls by corporations because these students represent cheap labor keeping minimum wage low.

Canadians are too easy going with holding our politicians accountable.

Finally, these students figured they have an easy access to life in Canada, didn't do their own goddamn research and now expect the rest of Canada to subsidize their rear ends.

Even worse, they raid food banks taking food away from low income Canadians, their justification: they pay more than Canadians for tuition. Just look for "how to get free food in Canada" on YouTube. Enough to make you want to round them all up and put them on a paddle boat back to the pind.

.
Here in U.K. they are struggling and take dead end beat jobs to survive , sleep in parks & bus stops and survive on scraps .
Another thing I’ve noticed they just cannot understand & comprehend the British language you have to repeat yourself for them to have a vague idea what your telling them and luckily they understand Urdu / Punjabi so can converse with them this way to get your point across .

They do not assimilate but that is problem with many new comers but the Indians live lonely lives here which is a shame and funny thing is second third generation British Pakistanis help the Indians more than what the British Indians do except maybe the Sikhs who lay on a meal for them daily at their gurdwara .

Sorry to say but this is totally retarded, you can't demand anything. University tells the housing costs beforehand and even if not, you are supposed to do your own research. I can't go to another country and demand they do this and that. If you can't afford it don't come here in the first place or chose another town which suits your budget.

Canada took way too many immigrants in a short period of time. There's not even enough housing to accommodate them all.

Trudeau ruined Canada.

this is why u stay back and build a better country and not rely on another country to take care of you

That is key. Far too many people come to the west and expect they can “negotiate”, but fail to realize they have no bargaining power. Nepali students that went to my university would work in New York hotels for 16 hours a day during their vacations, and sleep in a back room of the hotel. It was just they way they could make it.

College has become useless for many local student, why do they think these colleges would care about foreign students if they just keep coming.

Sub standard students go to shitty colleges to circumvent immigration.
One Nepali student I knew joined the US army to secure his citizenship, but basically yes.

To be fair there are two reasons in favor, first with our inverted population pyramid, the workforce does need more people in order to pay into unemployment insurance and the Canada pension plan, and second, demand for housing will keep the economy afloat.

Neither of which are good. Also the blame must start with his father, and subsequent PMs who kicked the can down the road as far as Canada's falling birth rate is concerned, and now Trudeau Jr is the one to deal with the problem which he is....just going about it the wrong way.

We need doctors, engineers, innovators, not servers, truck drivers and scam artists. Also we fked ourselves by not diversifying our economy away from service and real estate.

The students should have done some due diligence. Canadore ain't no Harvard. It is a trade school/diploma mill. No sense in coming overseas for this fly by night operator.

Amen, the entitlement is real. Also, they need to hold the immigration consultants accountable. Most of the time it's the same race, and they don't think twice about selling out their own to make a quick buck.

Same story in The Netherlands.

In this case, its not even the immigration consultant fault. One is supposed to do his own research about living cost in another country. A quick google search will show how expensive housing in Ontario is.

In any case, i doubt anything will come out of their camp protest. There are parks in the middle of downtown Toronto full of homeless camps, if they weren't given housing, what hope do these students have. They will either have move to Nunavat or Saskatchewan or back home.

What's your opinion on Poilievre?

Just look for "how to get free food in Canada" on YouTube. Enough to make you want to round them all up and put them on a paddle boat back to the pind.
