International Mathematical Olympiad 2015 results (India crashes and burns again)

Are you kiddding me , getting a medal in these olympiads is like getting a direct ticket to any of the best schools around the world, you just need to decide which one you want. These olympiads show haw capable you are in solving problems not like any school admission exam that say how good you memorized formulas but dont care shit if you cant use those formulas.

Not in India.

In India these Olympiads will not get you entry anywhere. :disagree: ......... its just another medal / Certificate hanging on your wall that no one cares about.

It get you to harward and MIT which I'm sure a lot better than any university you can hope to go in India or any place else in the world.

India math is only use to measure d!ck size contest, lol even condom is bigger for Indian men. lol

India has got 37th rank (I guess) and that is being taken as some sort of inferiority certificate! Amazing! I believe more mature posters would stay away from this conclusion and indeed from this thread but to clarify to newbies here is some info one might find insightful.

Indians at present are running multitude of world businesses from
1. Satya Nadella - Microsoft to
2. Indra Nooyi - Pepsico to
3. Sanjay. K. Jha - Global foundries to
4. Ajay Banga - MasterCard

There are more if one would care to search. These people aren't chinese or pakistanis. These are India born, educated in indian universities, hardworking smart people who rose to the very top in competitive international organisations. So either we are just lucky to rise to the top or we aren't just as interested in these competitions are some others are.

Yes, if some silly troll thinks just cos his commie image conscious government after running its specific programmes catering to very specific competitions has planted some flags. Fine by me.

For you my friend @JEskandari i would like to offer some information. I know of a guy who could code 2000 lines in a night (error free) and he didn't appear for any olympiad or PISA or whatever. He is currently making HUGE bucks writing predictive algorithms for a stock market company. Another of my batchmate joined Mckinsey and never appeared in PISA. He moved on to Blackstone and is currently in Harvard. In fact me and my mates who completed our education either didn't hear of coding competitions or appeared for olympiad. Point is, our best doesn't appear for such competitions.

A typical indian boy aged 15 (Class X) opts for science and maths OR Commerce to further his career and from there on its a very narrow view of either engineering or medical colleges. Nobody gives a shit about olympiads.
On the other hand Chinese are the most image conscious people around. They will institutionalise training, cheating or stab you in the back to get their name up top. and when they do they will run like idiots chanting their names.

As for your specific query, clearing these competitions might help MIT and Harvard etc open their doors at graduate level, but its an education not many can afford here. Its cheaper to get into IITs and from there one can move to any corner of the world. Hope this clears things a bit.

What's so strange about Spelling bees ?
Its a competition where you put young children in a big audience and ask them to spell words they would never have heard if their parents didnt force them to read a thesaurus.

Same as these maths competitions, cherry picked individuals who have most likely been pressured by schools/families to study non stop in the bizarre belief that there is prestige in something like this.

Far to much pressure on people to succeed in the hope of having a rich and successful life whilst missing all of the important truly meaningful things in life in the chase of power and money, its just a screwed up modern world where what is important is getting a high paying job so that you can retire at 55+ when your old and broken and dont get to enjoy yourself anymore, truly slaves and competitions like this are a fine example of this, apart from the rare few people who are probably borderline autistic the level of maths skill that is required is almost only attainable from huge pressure at young ages to excel instead of flourishing in your own way.

The title says it all...

Every educated Indian knows this result is nothing but a joke... when it comes to a subject like maths, Indians are way too good.. it may sound like bragging here but I know what I am saying... the best part is I never even heard of any competition like this. anyways congrats to US

While it's unfortunate that China did not take the top spot this year, it was barely defeated by the U.S. team, which is 1/3 Chinese anyway.

However, one pattern that did not change was the pitiful performance of that other "gigacountry", India. Time and time again, India falls flat on its face in any kind of impartially adjudicated international competition. Why is this? Indian blowhards would have us believe that their backwater is home to the world's greatest ubergeniuses. Yet these ubergeniuses rarely seem to come through when it matters. Come on guys, the jig is up. You can't even assemble a more competent math team than tiny Macau.

As far as I hate India is at 37, I wish to tell you, USA had lots of 2 Indian American Kids, and other American. Of the 2, one is Indian Chinese American(Father Indian, Mother Chinese)

In one word. liar.

Desi students help US win Math Olympiad after 21 years - Rediff.com India News

.
sound like sour grape, yes, those two chinese american students in the american team also cheated, right? because US government forces long preparation. In fact, every single chinese american student cheated in the american team, since there are always multiple chinese representing the american team every single year in the past decades, right?

Using a load of fallacies in your argument, does not make Chinese people super smart. Let me know what these Chinese math olympiad students gained after olympiads. How many of them became real mathematicians, and won fields medal? If none of them, then it proves my point that they were using these "dopings" in their exams and they failed later. Don't take me wrong, I have no bad intention about your people, I just want to burst your bubble of illusions for your own sake.

This has been discussed numerous times, it gets tiring. People from bottom-tier English speaking countries aka India and Philippine do well at another English speaking country is really nothing to brag about. Indian make great servants in English speaking countries, you are valued for your better English, loyalty, and being less of a "threat" than the Chinese. But you know what, Chinese just competes at the level that's way beyond Indian's realm, instead of being a servant at an English speaking company, Chinese have overwhelmingly started their own companies in China and are eating western companies lunch. To this day, not a single Indian tech company can compete head on with the western companies, every one of Indian tech company does low level cheap labor outsourcing job for western companies. There's simply no Indian equivalent of Chinese tech giants such as Xiaomi, Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent, Huawei, etc. The funny thing is none of the companies these Indian CEO work for started by Indian, which again, corroborated notion that Indian can only act as good servants in English speaking countries.

You can keep talk about your "friends" on the street doing algorithmic trading, or Harvard or MIT whatever. The truth is, for every Indian "friend" you mentioned here, there 10x as many Chinese doing just as well and better. There are so many Chinese with math and other intellectual Olympiad medals, and many of them get to pick and choose where they want to go, be it Harvard, MIT or Stanford, or Goldman Sachs prop trading, or any of the Wall Street algorithmic hedge funds. The truth is, at all these algorithmic trading hedge funds, majority of the employees have in the past won math, physics or other international intellectual competitions, yes, that's overwhelming number of east europeans and the Chinese dominating over the minuscule number of Indians. Most recently, many of these same chinese are moving back to China and Hong Kong starting their own hedge funds taking full advantage of the second largest equity market in the world and are making tens of millions of dollars.

Make no mistake, I'm sure there are few Indian geniuses here and there, but the number, breadth and depth of the Chinese talent pool is simply so overwhelming that renders whatever talent Indian have completely insignificant.

China is arguably the only major country after Iran that faces most severe western technology embargo to this day. Yet, Chinese technology is still leaps and bounds ahead of India in literally every single field. Be it manufacturing, space, IT, computer, shipping, etc. Take this, three Chinese IT tech companies, Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent command market value that are more than almost all Indian tech companies combined, that's not even counting thousands of other up and coming chinese tech companies. Chinese elite hacker units are second only to the US, which admittedly has the savviest hackers in the world. And Chinese super computer is way beyond anything Indian can dream of. NASA is forbidden to collaborate with the Chinese on any project, while Indian gets tons of help from NASA and from the west in general. Yet, Chinese still developed its own space station, walked its own space walk, developed its own GPS satellite system, Chinese space is decades ahead of Indian, DESPITE WESTERN TECH EMBARGO.

The body of evidence is so abundant, it is practically undeniable India is a low math and engineering level country. Yes, every field that relies on math and science, India lags far behind West, china, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, etc. The IMO competition is simply the direct way to measure these capabilities quantitatively. The result provided a confirmation to the long known fact, that India, in general, has low capability in Math and Science. You claim you don't care about the competition, the truth is, your people and government are so demoralized by your abysmal performance in these intellectual competitions, you simply stop caring. India has performed so badly in PISA, the government stopped participating, in few years, no one in India will even know what PISA is. On the other hand, let's look at the Spelling Bee, arguably the most rote memorization intensive competition in the world, Indian seem to care lot more.

Lastly, Indian not the Chinese is the most image conscious people in the world. It is Indian who made up lies such as 1 in 4 american doctors are Indian, 27% NASA are Indian, 30% intel whatever. The lie has been debunked so many times, yet it doesn't stop more Indians from spread it. Yes, we all know India will be a super power by 2030 with their white servants, keep dreaming and bragging.

keep spewing your jealousy... no one here ever claimed chinese is super smart, you did. I just used american team with chinese-american members as an counter argument, yet you still couldn't counter my point. India has the worst cheating in the world, where parents literally climb along the building wall to pass notes to their children. I don't see you bashing them, huh?

If your rants are over lets pop a few bubbles.

So you are saying Satya Nadella - An indian - got to be the chief of Microsoft just because he was fluent in english? The men i mentioned who are running global enterprises did not do Masters in English Literature. Secondly just to shred your argument Anshu Jain who headed Deutsche Bank till recently still doesn't speak German. A language native to the origin of this very company. Ask a chinese to compete with such handicap, we will see. In States or Europe, any chinese at any decent position of responsibility speaks english as well as any other indian, still its us Indians who rise to the top. Stop hiding behind this english speaking crap.

Chinese have overwhelmingly started their own companies in China and are eating western companies lunch. Your companies originated mostly from the manufacturing boom that China went through last decade. Steal others copyright, use your cheap labour and fake branding and off you go. You are proud of that? Good for you.
Research TATA, Reliance, Adani, Flipkart, Infosys, TCS etc. We are services heavy and you are manufacturing heavy. So?

I'm sure there are few Indian geniuses here and there, but the number, breadth and depth of the Chinese talent pool is simply so overwhelming that renders whatever talent Indian have completely insignificant.

Absolutely. Relax and don't mind us.

You claim you don't care about the competition, the truth is, your people and government are so demoralized by your abysmal performance in these intellectual competitions, you simply stop caring. India has performed so badly in PISA, the government stopped participating, in few years, no one in India will even know what PISA is.

LOL The government doesn't and can't force any of us here to take part in any competition. They only invite participation and there are NO REWARDS. No admission to IITs, no sponsorships to MIT or Harward etc. The plus side is there are no compulsions unlike in China where CCP orchestrate preparations for these competitions and picks students early, our govt can't do that. Thank god for that.

The day govt announces scholarships or guaranteed seats in premier colleges here based upon the performances in these exams , there will be no chinese left in the list to brag about.

On the other hand, let's look at the Spelling Bee, arguably the most rote memorization intensive competition in the world, Indian seem to care lot more.

Another example of when we put our minds to something, we excel at it. Now don't pretend there has never been any chinese participation or attempt to win this. One thing you might note is that it is not driven by governments. The participation is individual centric and voluntary.

Lastly, Indian not the Chinese is the most image conscious people in the world. It is Indian who made up lies such as 1 in 4 american doctors are Indian, 27% NASA are Indian, 30% intel whatever. Yes It may be false and its rebutted many times, mostly by indians (Some might be true though :) ). And genius i spoke about the chinese government not people as such.

Lastly in this globalised world where cooperation and pooling of talent is appreciated, association with Chinese in sensitive industries are frowned upon because you guys steal everything and then call it your own. Its nothing to be proud of.

. . .
Btw, There is one Hindu (Shyam Narayanan) among the winners, along with 3 Christian sounding names and 2 Chinese sounding names. No Muslims though.

Lol. Looks like you have comprehension issue. I said compare to the Chinese from China, Indian from India, Indian speaks better english, more loyalty and less of a threat than the chinese. If American companies want to promote someone, they'll more likely promote Indian than the Chinese. But that's ok, Chinese, unlike the Indian, start their own companies and are leaving many of these American companies in the dust. That's called top level competition, which makes simply rising through the corporate rank like child's play.

Deutsche Bank? Have you ever visited the bank or worked there? Every Deutsche Bank office in the world conduct their business in English, be it US, Hongkong, Beijing, UK or Spain. Anshu Jain rose through the rank while he worked in its New York office. And he conducts business in English while he's CEO. Get it? Indian can only be a good servant in English speaking companies and environment, there has been NO EXCEPTIONS, PERIOD. By the way, Chinese banks dominate any of these so called western banks, we are consistently ranked top 5 in the world, of course as always, Indian banks are no where to be found.

In any neutral third country where neither Chinese or Indian has language advantage, Chinese always dominate. Case in point, Malaysia, Spain, Italy or any African or Latin American countries where English isn't the spoken language. Even in Germany, Vietnamese, another east asian country, is the most successful asian immigrant.

So?

Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba are manufacturing companies? lol, lol. No, they are IT companies, and they are beating all of the so called Indian IT companies combined, yes that include all the IT companies you just listed here. That's just 3 chinese companies, not even counting thousands of up and coming chinese IT companies. Stealing? You can't manufacture anything even after your western friends gave you all the technology. Even your vaunted IT sector is way behind China in technology, why, because you can only do low level cheap outsourcing job for western companies, given lower level of math and programmatic capability.

Absolutely. Relax and don't mind us.

Like I said earlier , "the number, breadth and depth of the Chinese talent pool is simply so overwhelming that renders whatever talent Indian have completely insignificant."

Sponsored by government to study in the US? everyone gets prepared at young age? hahaha, how many more lies can you Indian make. No, these Olympiad medalist are actively courted by Harvard, MIT, Cal tech, Stanford to join their schools, these schools either offer full tuition off or full grants so these Chinese students can live and study in the US on US dime for FREE. I know, Indians don't know any of these great benefits from their American friends, because Indians have never won any Olympiad medals. LOL.

"The day govt announces scholarships or guarantee..." hahaha, another one of those future tense pipe dream from Indian. The reality on the ground is that there's simply no Indian on the list despite top American universities would sponsor any Olympiad medalists to live and study in the US for free. You see, on a leveled field, Indians are completely obliterated by the Chinese.

As I said earlier, the lack of math and science capability of India is so evident in every field you can possibly imagine, India lags far behind west, china, japan, taiwan in almost anything that requires math and science. China is so far ahead despite western technology embargo. This IMO test simply provides another strong confirmation of India's low math and science skill. The truth is, the chance of Indian cracking top 15 in any international intellectual competition in the future is essentially 0 as evidenced by its lack of math/science skill in every field/industries you can think of.

You wrong, everyone of these 1 in 5, 27%, 30%, etc craps are indian lies, it's been debunked for almost a decade now, there are so many jokes about this online, It's so pathetic, you have no recognition for anything, so you have to resort to lies.

.
2nd toughest. Gaokao isn't that hard if the directions are less ambiguous, which was a problem in the past.

Korean university test is harder IMO.

the US is a fearsome opponent. by grabbing 1st place they're showing that ABCs are starting to compete against native Chinese. That is simply unacceptable. Unlike Indians who are proud of 36% of NASA being Indians or something, I get worried whenever I see a huge amount of successful foreign born Chinese and foreign born Chinese overtaking native born Chinese, because it is a type of brain drain and lost opportunity.

That is one of the biggest myths I have heard.
