India leased the INS Chakra in 2012 for approximately US$700 million

NEW DELHI: The INS Chakra, India's only operational nuclear-powered submarine, is damaged and an investigation has been launched, Navy Chief Sunil Lanba said today.

"The INS Chakra sonar has been damaged. Two panels were dislodged. An inquiry has been initiated," said Admiral Lanba, informing that a joint India-Russia team had assessed the damage. The Navy chief was addressing a press conference to mark Navy Day.

INS Chakra is a Russia-made, nuclear-propelled, hunter-killer submarine that India has taken on a 10-year lease from Russia.

The navy has not disclosed how the damage took place on the vessel, which has not sailed for some time now.

India leased the INS Chakra in 2012 for approximately US$700 million and is in talks to lease another. The Akula Class submarine is currently berthed at Visakhapatnam.

One of the quietest nuclear submarines around, the INS Chakra can stay underwater as long as it wants, unlike conventional submarines that need to surface to charge their batteries often.

The INS Chakra can do over 30 knots - more than twice the speed of conventional submarines. It can go upto a depth of 600 metres. The submarine is managed by 80 crew members.

INS Chakra was expected to be inducted into Indian Navy way back in 2010, but after an on-board accident in 2008, in which several Russian sailors died, the delivery was stalled.

The only other nations with nuclear-powered submarines are - US, Russia, UK, France and China.

This is the same sub Indians , exposed to American spies to steal secret Russian data
When Russians demanded return of their Submarine, Indians slammed it into a ship and claimed the Sub cannot be returned as it is not in operational condition further infuritaing Krimlin

Americans were busy spying the innner halls of the Submarine and investitgated the various section of the submarine to look for weak points or how the Submarine can be better detected

Probably, some crew members disgusted by the food quality served on-board did it. Or some one who didn't want to go on a voyage and stay at home to eat biwi k hath ki tarkay wali daal.

forget staying underwater ..... lucky for the Russians it still has a hull
is Chakra doing any knots these day?
depth of 600m......I don't think so.
managed by 80 crew but mismanaged by only Indians

From another source:

Sources told ThePrint that the submarine — currently India’s only operational nuclear-powered vessel — suffered damage to its sonar dome in the accident. The sonar dome is located at the forward portion of the submarine, beneath the torpedo tubes.
While details of the incident are yet to emerge, sources said that the damage could be the result of either a collision at sea or accidental scraping while entering the harbour. The Indian Navy refused to comment on the incident.
Repair work on the submarine is likely to be complicated given that the sonar dome is made of titanium, a difficult metal that requires both specialised machinery and manpower to work on.

another day another disaster for Indian navy, how many ships and submarines are they going to write off before their get their act together.

The Russians were impressed how the Indian Navy crew successfully managed to avert any major damage and only minor damage occurred.

A few years back in a similar situation the Russian Navy failed unlike the Indian Navy & caused a massive 15 feet hole in one of their SSBN n-subs

Countries with coast guard navies are preaching submarine and naval vessel security.
