Garud (pronounced as ga as in gum, roo, da as in dumb) is the right name for Eagle in Sanskrit. However, the eagle is considered the "king" of birds and therefore accorded the mythical name . Hope this clears the doubts.

The pronunciation of Ga-Ru-Da as Gaa Roo Daah is a bastardisation of anglic spelling system.

Secularism doesn't prohibit us from naming things after mythical creatures. We also have names like shamsher for the jaguars, and INS Kunjali for the Indian navy's training center. The latter is a muslim name in South India.

USA is a secular country, and that doesn't prevent them from naming their missiles as 'hellfire', although hell is a religious fairytale. Secularism does not mean lack of religion. Don't speak words you don't know.
