Indigenous AWACS to be flight-tested by 2011

HYDERABAD: Even as the Indian Air Force (IAF) is likely to acquire the third Phalcon Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) from Israel by December, India is in the process of developing nine home-grown, state-of-the-art versions and the first of them is expected to be flight-tested by the end of next year.

Five frontline laboratories of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are working to develop the system which would be 85 per cent indigenous, Prahlada, Chief Controller, R & D (Aerospace and Services Interaction), DRDO, told The Hindu here. The Centre for Airborne Systems, Defence Avionics Research Establishment, Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, Defence Electronics Application Laboratory and Electronics and Radar Development Establishment are involved in the prestigious project.

While three of the systems would be integrated on board the Brazilian Embraer EMB 145 jet and delivered by 2014, the aircraft on which the remaining six AWACS would be mounted was yet to be decided. The DRDO received the sanction for developing the six AWACS costing Rs.10,000 crore, he added. The delivery of these AWACS to the IAF would begin from 2015. They would be used for air defence, surveillance and network-centric operations.

Military aerostats

With the three services requiring several aerostats, the DRDO would be making two types of military aerostats — the first type to carry military payloads up to an altitude of 1,000 metres and the second up to a height of 5,000 metres.

Already a 1,000-metre aerostat was afloat and its functions were demonstrated to both the Army and Air Force, he added.

Dr. Prahlada said the aerostats would be used for surveillance, jamming of electronic systems, intelligence data gathering and for communication relay.

The radar of the 1,000-metre aerostat would have a coverage of 150 km, while that of the 5,000-metre one would be up to 200 to 250 km.

.
What are the specs and how are these indegenous awacs better than what our adversaries have?

.
Is our AWACS implements Electronic steering or mechanical steering...

Secondly There was a report which stated that Chinese knocked our AWACS.. how far it is true?

.
ya what r the specs of the radar under development??
wats its range meant to be?

hahaha...hat was reported by some fool in chinese forum that Chiese air defense had knocked down a brand new PHALCON AWAC...
One An-32 had met with an accident in Himachal..and that guy was crazy enough to post that a phalcon was knocked down..

Yeah because Phalcon is powerful to defend itself.. I heard that it can burn the electronic chips of Missiles which heads towards it

Lots of info in the news report...

IAF going for 9 DRDO AWACS
AEROSTATs with 1000m and 5000m altitude are under development
1000m AEROSTAT already demonstrated to the IA and IAF

All these systems are vital for our air defence, surveillance and network-centric operations specially when cruise missiles are developed by our neighbors.

Initially the Israeli Air Force installed the Phalcon system on Boeing 707 aircraft, which replaced its E-2Cs which were retired in mid-1990s. In the middle of the first decade of the 21st century the Air Force purchased 5 Gulfstream G550 aircraft to serve as the new IDF platform for its newer generation of AEW systems.[4] The new aircraft is called Eitam and uses a newer variant of the Phalcon system, the EL/W-2085 dual-band sensor suite and is more capable and less expensive to operate than the older 707-based Phalcon.[5] Extensive modifications were made to the Gulfstream's fuselage by IAI, such as the addition of protruding composite radomes, are intended to allow for the housing of the radar arrays housed in conformal body modifications. In 2007, 4 similar G550-Phalcon aircraft were also purchased by the Republic of Singapore Air Force, to eventually replace its upgraded E-2C Hawkeyes. All 4 G550s are expected to be in-service by 2010.[6]

China's purchase of the Phalcon system in 2000 was denied due to pressure from the United States.

[edit]Sale to India
In March 2004, Israel and India signed a US$1.1 billion deal according to which IAI would deliver the Indian Air Force three Phalcon AEW&C radar systems.[7] India signed a separate deal with the Ilyushin Corporation of Russia for the of supply three Il-76 A-50 heavy air-lifters, which were to be used as platforms for these radar systems, for an additional US $500 million.[8] In 2008, media reports suggested that India and Israel were about to sign a deal for three additional Phalcon radars.

India received its first AWACS on 25 May 2009. It landed in Jamnagar AFB in Gujarat completing its 8 hour long journey from Israel. [9]
