New Delhi:
A 20-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh died in Delhi this morning, nearly two weeks after she was gang-raped and tortured by four men from her village in Hathras. The woman had been in an extremely critical state with multiple fractures and her tongue had been slashed in the horrific assault.

She had been in the ICU in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh until she was moved to Delhi yesterday.

All four attackers are in jail. The woman belonged to the Scheduled Castes community, while the attackers were from a so-called upper caste. The incident, coming in a wave of crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh in recent months, sparked nationwide shock and anger as details of the woman's injuries emerged.

The woman's family has accused the Uttar Pradesh police of not helping them initially but reacting only after public outrage.

The woman was attacked on September 14 at her village in Hathras, some 200 km from Delhi. She was dragged by her dupatta into the fields from a spot where she had been cutting grass with her family.

"My mother, sister and elder brother had gone to a field to get some grass. My brother went home earlier with a large bundle of grass, while my mother and sister continued to cut them. The women were a little far from each other. Four-five people came from behind, they threw my sister's dupatta around her neck and dragged her inside the bajra field," the woman's brother told NDTV.

"My mother realised she was missing and went looking for her. My sister was found unconscious. They had raped her. The police did not help us initially... they did not take quick action. They acted only after four-five days," he said.

The Uttar Pradesh police denied the family's allegation of slow response. "This is a very unfortunate incident but we have been proactive in making arrests and helping the family in whatever manner possible . I will personally ensure swift investigation and that these men are tried in a fast track court," Hathras police chief Vikrant Vir had told NDTV in an interview on Sunday.

A woman died in hospital in the Indian capital, New Delhi, on Tuesday, weeks after authorities said she was raped by a group of men, triggering protests and opposition criticism over what it said was a failure to protect women.

Her case was the latest in a string of gruesome crimes against women in India that have given it the dismal reputation of being one of the worst places in the world to be female.

One woman reported a rape every 15 minutes on average in India in 2018, according to the latest government data released in January.

“There is next to no protection for women. Criminals are openly committing crimes,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a leader of the opposition Congress party, said on Twitter.

The 19-year-old victim, belonging to the Dalit community – formerly known as “untouchables” – was attacked and raped on September 14 at a field near her home in Hathras district, 100km (62-mile) from New Delhi, authorities said.

Police have arrested four men in connection with the crime.

On Monday, the woman was brought from a hospital in Uttar Pradesh state to New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment, authorities said.

About 300 protesters from the Bhim Army, a party championing the rights of Dalits, entered the hospital building and shouted slogans near the mortuary where the woman’s body was kept.

“We will take the matter to fast-track court for the faster investigation and collection of evidence,” district authorities in Hathras said in a statement.

#Hathras trended on Twitter as social media users expressed outrage at the latest case of gruesome sexual assault.

The woman’s home state of Uttar Pradesh, which is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ranks as the most unsafe state for women in the country.

Last December, a 23-year-old Dalit woman was set ablaze by a gang of men as she made her way to a court in Uttar Pradesh to press rape charges.

A Dalit girl gets gang raped by a bunch of upper caste Hindus, she is tortured and beaten and left for dead

Indian police then lock up the dalit family

And in the middle of the night cremate or basically burn the body of the now dead dalit girl

I guess what we are experiencing in pakistan now a days doesn't make us qualified for making such statements. We have enough filth of such kind in our country too to clean before making any such statements.

Sometimes my kids rationalize how 20% of the Muslim population rule for 1000 years on 80% of Indians. This type of incident makes me easy to answer them and explain Quran verse

Certainly We have honoured the Children of Adam, and carried them over land and sea, and provided them with all the good things, and given them an advantage over many of those We have created with a complete preference. 17:70

This surah of Quran 17:70 reflects "Respect and honor all human beings irrespective of their religion, color, race, sex, language, status, property, birth, profession/job, and so on.

The chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, is the second poster-boy of modern Hindutva after Modi. He was being celebrated by the bhakts for his supposed actions against crime in UP.

But reality. Crime has not vanished from UP, especially against Dalit, including women. I mean active crime and the passive background injustice-enabling culture, including against Dalits and Muslims.

Here are some of Yogi's misogynist and suffocating views :
He believes women need male protection from birth to death and their ‘energy/power’ should be regulated or controlled, lest it become worthless and destructive.
He adds the shastras say that a woman is protected in her childhood by her father, by her husband in her youth and by her son in her old age — so that way a woman is not capable of being left free or independent.

This problem will not be solved until rapists are free to roam.

This problem will not be solved until rapists are free to roam.

Uttar Pradesh is among the more continuous badlands of India. Caste injustice, inter-religion strife, misogyny, an easiness with criminality and regressive attitudes. All these combine to put comfort in the minds of criminals, including rapists, that their crimes will go unpunished.

Here is one well-known case from UP from 2019 December :
A 20-year-old woman, who survived a brutal rape some time ago, was on Thursday set ablaze in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao by a group of men. The five men who had raped her in March this year, are suspected to be behind the latest attempt to kill her.

The rape accused and his friends took the woman outside her village and into the fields and doused her in petrol before setting her on fire. She was raped by the five men in March while police could manage to arrest only three of them and two others were still on the run.

Police rushed to the spot later and took the woman to a nearby government hospital where she has been admitted in a critical condition. She was later referred to a Lucknow hospital as her condition was grave.

The incident occurred at Sindupur village under Bihar police station area and has caused tension in the area.

Police said, "The victim has been referred to a hospital in Lucknow for better treatment. The victim had earlier filed a rape case and one of the accused in that case has also been rounded up".

Police have arrested all five men involved in the crime including the main accused Shivam Trivedi.

According to sources one of these five men is the son of the village pradhan against whom the woman had lodged a rape complaint. An FIR was lodged on March 4 by the woman who was set on fire on Thursday.

The woman was walking to the nearby railway station under when the group accosted her and took her to a field outside the village and poured petrol on her.

When police reached the spot they found her in a severely burnt condition while the accused men had fled by then.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has hit out at the UP government and accused it of lying about the law and order situation in the state.

In a tweet on the Unnao incident, Gandhi said, "Yesterday the Union home minister and the chief minister of UP lied about the law and order situation in the state. Seeing such incidents every day makes one angry. BJP leaders should also stop with the fake propaganda now."

This is gross human rights violation.

Restrictions should be imposed on India as a country until such time that human rights improves in India.

Saddening news, indeed.

Here are some of Yogi's misogynist and suffocating views :

I understand, sort of, the hindutva attitude towards Muslims simply because Islam is a different belief system all together.

However, I don't really understand the way current incarnation of hindutva views castes and especially the lower castes. Given that dalits are hindus, and I assume they are also voters of Modi, why are they also considered persecuted by what seems to be a religious movement within their own religion?

Also for any other Indian who understands the dynamics at play.

@Joe Shearer

Thank you.
